Jim Lee draws all his characters anatomically correct and all slim muscular toned like how everyone wants to be. And his line drawing is smooth and thin
If you can, check out Jim Lee's pencils vs inked. Scott Williams is an underrated partner in his art. You can get the Justice League graphic novel, and then get Justice League Unwrapped with just his pencils no inks or color, and compare how much Scott Williams embellishes. I would really like to see your observations on the inks vs pencils because trying to study Jim Lee is very hard, and you seem to have a very good handle on his art.
This is a fab suggestion! I have scoured the Internet for inked x-men unwrapped, so I can keep with the x-men series for continuity, however I will see about adding either a section in the upcoming rendering video or a whole Jim and Scott video in its entirety. As I'm sure over the years they have both evolved and I think it would be super interesting to study! But fear not, I have a Jim X-Men rendering video coming up where I try and decipher and give logical solutions to a somewhat.. organic rendering style 🤣😁
Hi, Pancake. Hope you're well. Thanks for another great lesson/deep dive. After getting the concepts of the basics down, this is a great dive into how a professional artist approaches their work.
Hello Clint! I am doing great thanks, I hope you're doing well also? You're welcome, I hope it was useful! I know it's a lot of information to pack into a video, and Jim's work isn't always logical but I hope it helped you learn something. :)
@@LearnComicsWithPancake I am, thank you! And yes you're right sometimes his work isn't logical but his art is pretty iconic and I'm glad you're making deep dive studies on it so beginners like myself can learn from his work. 😁
this channel is a gold-mine for aspiring comic artists! Really appreciate the insight & your shared thoughts. New subscriber!!! Can’t wait to see that rendering video ;)
You're welcome my friend! I'm honestly overwhelmed at the outpouring of support, it's been amazing! This week I'll be uploading Jim Lee's hair, and then next week will be rendering 😁
Very informative! It would be cool if you made a similar video about other comic artists such as: John Byrne, Mike Mignola, Frank Miller, Moebius, etc.
Methodical should be my middle name in all honesty haha 🤣 I will for sure do a clothes breakdown, there are so many different type of folds and I think there's very little clear logical instruction out there. As for inking - Jim Lee's rendering (with Scott's inks) is coming after my next one about Jim Lee's hair 😁
@@LearnComicsWithPancake That sounds awesome! Methodical, clear, and logical is all super great. Need more of it out there, for sure: ) Subbed and looking forward to more of your vids!
Thank you so much for this amazing learning video on how to draw like Jim Lee. Your analysis is the best I've seen in general on Jim's style. I've subscribed :)
You're very welcome! I love doing deep dives and studying artists I admire, so I figured I would share and see if there was anyone else out there who enjoyed it aha. 😁 are there any other artists you'd like to see a video like this on?
@@LearnComicsWithPancake I'm sorry. I've been meaning to reply to your thoughtful and generous reply for awhile now. I would love for you to do Marc Silvestri and J Scott Campbell. And if you want to do someone oldschool, Gil Kane is the man. His razor sharp anatomy was amazing.
@Tellin08 I was secretly hoping someone would say Marc Silvestri so I can have an excuse to do a Marc deep dive haha! Gil Kane is such a good shout as well, thank you! 😁
Batman the Cat appreciates you for liking and commenting regardless! And of course, there is no way I can compare to the man himself haha. His streams are a goldmine!
Thank you for taking the time to comment twice, that is very kind! Next will be how we can create Jim Lee's hair, so I'm hoping it will be just as good 😊
Thank you for the kind comment! 😁 next 2 videos are still Jim Lee - hair and rendering. I've had two requests now for Jorge Jiminez so it sounds like a definite possibility..! 😁

First thought - ah, a youtube clip with a title designed to make me watch immediately. Second thought - hey, I have that same carbon monoxide alarm! Liked and subscribed.
You gotta stay safe right? 😁 I really try and now stay away from click bait titles unless I can back it up, I hate videos where it's a click bait and then 7 minutes of waffle before the 'trick'/'secret'/'theory' is revealed. However, I would never the true secret is to have my carbon monoxide alarm to get me a subscription 😂
One of my favourite artists right there! If you haven't seen his streams and videos, highly recommend. He is super insightful, and where I got my inspiration to do deep dives from. 😊
I know of the name, mainly because he publicly said he didn't like Jim Lee's work haha! But I've heard amazing things about his Wolverine run? I will check him out for sure, thank you for the suggestion my friend!
Another entertaining video! I always thought of how Jim draws faces as "Rob Leifeld, but good". Given that the main characters in my comic are a catfolk and a kobold, I don't draw human faces as often as him, and mine tend to borrow more from manga/cartoony than American comics these days, but once upon a time I borrowed a lot from his style. I always liked how he created the impression of shadow and form with the lighting and breaking up the lines, particularly with noses.
I like your description - Rob liefield but good haha! Ooo I like that your comic is centred around cat people, that is so cool! 😁 and you are spot on, Jim is a master of lighting while we are all mere apprentices in comparison 🤣
@@LearnComicsWithPancake Well the main character, Nails, is a catfolk at least, she was a Tabaxi barbarian I created for D&D originally but since I'm wanting to publish it I changed all WotC/Hasbro owned names from it, so I can't call her a Tabaxi in the comic itself.
