  • FROM THE ARCHIVE: This 2-part feature film first aired on TV in 2015.
    At this controversial theme park in Kunming, China, little people dress in costumes and perform for visitors. Despite the fantasy world promised to them, life is not exactly a fairy tale.
    This observational documentary chronicles the journeys of a few employees in China's Dwarves Kingdom, in their pursuit of happiness and explores the shades of modern-day morality.

    That big guy at the end threatening you beat a dwarf is disgusting. The dwarf is obviously depressed & very sad & doesn’t need some clown threatening him.

      @@josargor8179 I think Quan Quan's father did treat him poorly, if you watched the first part of this documentary (it is a completely seperate video than this one, but still by CNA) you would see where he vowed never to come back to the Dwarf village. He also said that his father used to hit him and beat on him. His father absolutely guilted him into going back when it was very evident that he did NOT want to. He only went back because his father basically forced him into it so that he can support them in the old age, mind you he said their both only in their 50's and are still capable of working but are relying on their child who has a physical disability. The only reason he said it shouldn't be on his sister is because she is married and has children of her own, but what about Quan? He deserves to find love and have an opportunity to live his own life and do as he pleases, it shouldn't be about the parents, no matter what the culture says. His father sat there and kissed the asses of the people that run the Dwarf Village and it was obvious they were lying. If you haven't seen the first video about this "Theme Park", you really should. I think it's a demoralizing place and they treat their employees like children and like crap! And yes, so did his parents!

    It’s a tough life for people with disabilities. I especially feel their sadness, because their height has limited their natural ability to be treated as adults, resulting in disrespect and often ridicule.
    I kept trying to think of other jobs they could do to exploit their diminutive size. I remember working on submarines, they used little people to weld and service parts of the ship, larger technicians couldn’t easily access.
    I pray that they all find happiness.

Never threaten to beat others dwarf or not. Who the hell does that guy think he is? Never pick up a grown person just because they are little without consent. These adults were treated like children and it makes me sick!

    I find it disturbing how the girl plainly said no many times about a picture taken and said that she doesn't like to be picked up. I read a comment that said If they choose to be there then it's not exploitation. I wonder if the choice was made freely or forced upon them. However IT'S NOT MY PLACE TO SAY WHAT'S RIGHT OR WRONG WITH ANOTHER PERSONS LIFE AND HAPPINESS. AS LONG AS THEY AREN'T BEING HURT.

    I hope Quan and the others find peace. The owner chastising him at the end is clearly sh*tfaced and not the benevolent person he claims to be, and the 'teacher' is a menace.
    They have everyone around them exploiting/manipulating them including their own families.

  • @isbsey
    @isbsey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    This made me feel torn. These little people don't have a good time mostly within their own families because they are seen as a burden and not a family member who can contribute a good wage. Then they are treated badly in factories if the factory will actually take them on. This place seems to be exploiting them in a way, but I think it suits some very well. There is no discrimination and the boss telling off the runaway at the end is mild to how a lot of employers in China treat workers. We must remember we are judging this to our standards but Chinese culture is very different to Western ways.

    To the people in the comments upset at Quan Quan's treatment...he kind of brought it upon himself in a way. He acted immaturely and irresponsibly. In Chinese culture there is a hierarchy and you have to respect your seniors, that's just how it is. It is a very hierarchical society and you have to be respectful and not do whatever you feel like (eg. leaving a job without telling anyone). The reason everyone was treating him like a child was because he was acting like one. If you want to be treated like an adult you have to act like one (for example, compare him with the 30-year-old lady who was very mature and had lots of friends looking out for her). I understand that in the West people are treated differently but you have to remember it is a different culture. In China, they don't treat you better because you are disabled. There is also a lack of understanding about mental health issues and it is possible that he was depressed but no one knew about it.
    In short, please don't judge another culture by Western standards. A lot of things in Western culture don't make sense to non-Western people either.
    Edit: I've finally finished watching the 2-part series and I think I know what Quan Quan's problem is. He seems to be very introverted and is not good at expressing himself or communicating with others (for example, he never told his parents he was bullied at school, but there is no reason why he kept it to himself? He also didn't contact his father when he was having problems at the Little Kingdom and chose to run away without telling anyone). He himself said he couldn't handle the "complicated" relationships at the Little Kingdom. It seems that he just isn't good at getting along with people. Unlike the other little people (like the girls) who are a lot more open and social, he likes to keep to himself (eg. one of the other workers said he keeps going out at night to go to internet cafes). I think it's his personality, not the fact that he's a little person, that causes others to bully him. I don't even think they intend to bully him, they are just frustrated by his personality. The other little people don't get treated the same way. The documentary makers chose to focus on his story, because it's dramatic, but I don't think it's fair to paint his story as "typical" of how little people are treated. Yes, there is discrimination by society, but you can see that their families are quite caring and don't treat them any differently than their 'normal' children (in fact they probably care for them more).
