  • Silk screening on glass. Works the same way on ceramic items as well

    Notes:
    Although I keep referring to these as stencils, I am using Martha Stewart Silk Screens for this process.
    In referring to the "paint" that I am using, I am actually using Mayco Stroke & Coat ceramic glazes which need to be kiln fired/fused to the glass.
    After turning the piece over, I mention placing "clear" decorative pieces on top, that should have been "translucent" colored decorative glass pieces.
    I use this process to create colorful suncatchers. If it is used for a food service item (plate, bowl, tray, etc) I would recommend that the glaze be capped with a clear sheet on top.
    Hope these notes help for clarification :).

    Instead of turning the stenciled image face down to fire, can I put a clear glass on top of the stenciled side and just fire it that way ? Many thanks for the great tutorial 💜

    Can you add Gum Tex to Glassline paints? Also, where do you get your silk screen stencils?

  • @CraftCastle11
    @CraftCastle11  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I mention that we have used these silk screens on fabric, paper, canvas, etc. We use acrylic paints for the paper and canvas, glass paints (liquitex glossies, americana gloss enamels, perm-enamel paints, etc) on glass may also be used for non kiln fired projects. Note: Glass paints stain the silk screens and should be washed off ASAP.

      +Craft Castle if I may say so: These are NOT silk screens. These are commercial templates. [Just to get the terminology right]

    Can you uses any colored paint at a hardware store meant for glass to get the same results or do you need special glass paint? With glass powder or recycled glass you don't have to worry about all this but when it comes to paint it opens up one additional issue type of paint that works question?

    Do you need to cap the back or the front or can you just fuse it with no cap at all if you need it to be thin?

    I love the video! Do you have to fire face down? Can you just clear cap it then fuse?

    so you can color glass and heat it so it embeds in the object.. i thought you had to uses a glass powder painted on for glaze. I wasn't sure that paint colors/dyes retained there colors and location when you fired the glass. Great video still trying to figure out the paint transfer ramifications can it do the same as glass powder glazes. Can you get the same breath of color ranges???

    I am confused as to what kind of paint you are actually using. I would like to fire these.

      Joe Hansen Thank you Joe. I have added annotations to the video to help clarify. The "Paints" used are actually Mayco Stroke and Coat ceramic glazes. Glassline paints for glass fusing may also be used.

    What is the firing schedule

    • @cherylmorris860
      @cherylmorris860 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Darlene Dixon So sorry Darlene, I missed seeing your question. The firing schedule will vary depending upon your kiln. I follow Spectrum Glass' schedule for a contour fuse. You may find their schedule at spectrumglass.com.

    may i ask why the gum? and why the fire. is a sealer necessary? thank you.

    • @CraftCastle11
      @CraftCastle11  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The gum tex powder is a thickener. The glaze on its own is too thin and can bleed under the silk screen material if not thickened. The firing is required because this is being done on fused glass with ceramic glaze. The ceramic glaze will wash right off if not fired in a kiln.

    Great video, I have never used ceramic glaze on glass, how hot do you have to fire it?

    • @CraftCastle11
      @CraftCastle11  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fire according to normal fuse firing schedules. The firing schedules for glass are not hot enough to fire the glaze to a shiny finish. The glazed areas will be a matte finish. To use the glaze on food items (bowls, plates) the glaze should be capped with clear glass.

    • @CraftCastle11
      @CraftCastle11  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CraftCastle11
      Normal fusing temps range from 1200 - 1500 degrees and varies depending on the thickness and size of the project being fused.
