Hi, thank you in advance OWC for this instructional video! I am very new to iMac, but I own a 2017 21.5-inch iMac with a 1TB Fusion Drive. Does this mean that my iMac has a socket for an NVMe SSD? If yes, can I replace both the HDD and the SSD? Thanks, OWC.
Your iMac will only have that option if it comes with an SSD in that slot from the factory. This would be if your iMac either had just an NVMe SSD already installed or a fusion drive installed. If neither of these came on the iMac it will usually not have the option to add it in later.
I have a 2017 iMac 21.5 non retina. t has a 1 TB SATA. Can you replace the SATA Drive with a SSD? I saw that Fusion and 256 GB SSD were upgrades to this computer and mine doesn't have the upgrade?
Which one you would pick depends on what you currently have installed, if you have a SATA HDD you would want to replace with an SATA SSD. If you have a Fusion Drive you could do either. Apple won't put the connections for whichever drive type you don't have so while PCIe is often faster if your computer didn't get it from the Apple factory you won't have the connections to put it on your computer. In most cases a SATA SSD is more standard but you can always check your System Report to see which you have.
I'm upgrading my HD on my 2017 first - if you think this is aggravating, look up the process for upgrading hard drive and memory on 2019, 21.5". That's my next project.
If you are referring to the original Adhesive on the Monitor, no it will likely not just stick again. We always recommend taking the original adhesive completely off and re-applying for the best results. There is always a chance that the original adhesives get damaged just enough that it is no longer able to hold the monitor effectively causing your screen to fall off and get damaged.
Hi there! Im so confused, when opening my iMac there’s no hard drive where yours is. It’s just an empty space with no Sata connector to be found. I own an iMac from 2017, with an ssd hard drive of around 250 go that I meant to replace by a 2 to. But I can’t find the hard drive lol If anyone knows what’s up it’s greatly appreciated, I’m stuck!
Hey Matthias Piaux, It seems like you purchase a custom iMac with only a NVMe SSD that is located on the motherboard. When you purchase an iMac like this Apple does not install an HDD or provide the SATA connector regrettably. If you want to replace or increase your storage you will need our Aura Pro X2 and we have also included the Installation video for that install as well. eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/imac-27-inch/2013-2019 eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac-27-inch-5k-2019-pciessd/
Thanks for the video, I will use it to replace the main drive in my iMac.

Does reformatting happen before or after the installation?
@OWC I would like to replace my hhd with a ssd. But I don't understand the difference between ssd sata and PCIe. Which one should I prefer?

works for imac not retina 2017?
Yes! This upgrade video is for both 4k and non 4K 2017 iMacs
Great video of navigating a**hole design
why not just have someone hold up the screen, change the drive, and put back down the screen, the adhesive should still stick right?
