    I hope you enjoyed your time in Tallinn. The drones are delivery drones by Starship. This company was founded by a former founder of Skype (which we also claim as made in Estonia) and is a reflection of the high tech focus of Tallinn. If you come back this way you can see the rebirth & the modern side which gives an interesting contrast to the old town. Safe travels to you.

    I was there last June, loved it! If you ever get the chance to go back, do the Naissaar island trip. It’s a boat that takes you to the island where there’s an abandoned Soviet military base. You can trick all your mates back home into thinking you went urbexing into some top secret Soviet base 😂
    I found Tallinn and Riga (and if you ever do Vilnius) have street layouts that mess with your brain compass - just constantly winding and changing direction. You need maps on your phone 😂

    I went lat year mate direct from Liverpool. Its not cheap. The Depeche Mode bar was hilarious and Kalamaja was cool (full of hipsters) and Alexander Netsky Cathedral and Peter The Greats House was really interesting as well. When I went it was nearly summer. Spent a a bit of time in HellHunt pub and that old factory that is now a Brewery in Kalamaja (Spelling) where they done Stout that was like 10%
    Also as somebody who is very interested in the Soviet Union I couldn't believe the Soviets wanted to knock Alexander Netsky cathedral down.

    • @HelenGolovina-y9h
      @HelenGolovina-y9h ปีที่แล้ว

      The Soviets didnt want to knock it down. We, the Estonians did and still do. It is a symbol of occupation, firstly. And secondly, it is so out of context there. In the middle of a medieval nordic city, suddenly a new (1900) orthodox church. It eats up the whole place, and it is the most important place in Estonia, with our parliamentary building and the Hermann Tower where our flag is hoisted every sunrise and lowered every sunset. This church should have been taken down and I am very sad they lacked funds to do it in 1920 (It was the Estonian Republic, not Soviet Union) I have no problem with orthodox churches. We have quite many of them, small and wooden, in places where they fit the context. There is a lovely on, for example, on top a peninsula on the seaside, with a very very nice garden. Nobody wants to take it down. This one on Toompea hill though is just sooo wrong. And how wrong it is is highlihted by the fact that this video comletely misses the Tallinn Dome Church right around the corner, historically the most important church in Estonia, also one of the first ones, one of the first stone buildings in Tallinn, in the 13th century. The video would not have missed it, had the hill not been simply so overpowered by the big orthodox church.
      As for being interested in the Soviet Union: well, for the people whom it actually concerned, it means nothing but tragedy, death, deportation, loss of property, loss of family members and loss of freedom. The worst thing that ever happened in Estonian history, and one of the worst things in world history. I just see no point in gloryfying it in any way, shape or form. The church, of course, is from before the Soviet union, from an earlier russification wave. But tourists are so fascinated by it, it is crazy. And so weird, because really it is a very typical orthodox church, there are zillions of the like in Russia. If you like them and are interested, I suggest a place called Kizhi Island in Lake Ladoga in Russia. They have somehow transported old, really old, like from the 10 th century etc wooden orthodox churches there. And that is all there is on that island. That is truly amazing. And you can have guided tours there organised from various places around there. It is also in Unesco world heritage list, just like Tallinn. By the way, that crazy monstrous church on Toompea was a reason we were almost taken off the UNESCO list, because it messes with the historic context. It is against the law to build new buildings in Old Town and there are very strict rules if someone wants to renovate or do anything in the old town. It was so already during Soviet occupation.
      The Soviets did ruin and take down a lot churches because they were against religion as such. Churches were turned into warehouses, gyms, markets etc. It mostly happened in Russia itself during Soviet Union. Russia destroyed loads of Russian orthodox churches and killed off thousands of orthodox priests.

    An Estonian here. That russian church should still be torn town. It is not just a symbol of oppression. Its also a symbol of russification i.e banning everything and anything Estonian and forcing everything to be russian. Its a symbol of executions, deportations, slavery etc. And yeah, we should have it, to remember to always be ready to fight our neighnours... but. Not in the old town. Just somewhere else.

    • @BenRobson123
      @BenRobson123  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment Mikhel. I read that flights below 150m don’t need permission.
      The information for drone flying is quite often very contrasting and unclear, which can make it quite difficult to know what is allowed and what isn’t!

    • @KohaAlbert
      @KohaAlbert ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BenRobson123there are no fly zones (airports and airpaths are rather obvious ones)
      Some of those are due privacy concerns for example (going to peek through someone's windows is a quite big no-no all on itself) -- as people have had trouble with some who have done that, some purely residential zones which have taken no-fly zone for their specific area against drones exist.
      There's map at somewhere which displays those restricted zones...

    I like your videos, but honestly, this one is pretty bad. Not because Tallinn is bad or boring, but because you seem to have done no research at all before going there. Usually, you show pretty much all the best sightseeing places in the city as well as the best museums. Nothing of that here. You just showed some buildings you stumbled across - and that's it. Tallinn has so much more to offer, even in addition to the old town, out of which you showed like 20% max. Great viewing platforms, churches (one of which used to be the tallest building in the world), the oldest drugstore in Europe that is still open, the thick city wall tower, beautiful tiny passages, extremely nice new neighbourhoods like Rotermanni and Noblessner, awesome museums like seaplane harbor, LvlUp, etc. etc. It's just soooo disappointing.

      Have you heard a saying: "When you reach the top of the mountain, all you have there is what you brought with you in your backbag"? Think about what it means. If you are bored, it is because you have nothing in your back bag. And when you are not bored, you have something in your bag, in your soul. And because of that you find things interesting. There has to be something in your should first. If the soul is empty.... everything is boring.
