@@04anuragswain57 actually there are quite a few surnames like Mohapatra, Mohanty, Pradhan, Das which are common to Odiyas and also to Bengalis living in Purba Medinipur district since it's close to the border. Even Tamluk(Tamralipta) was a part of Kalinga Kingdom. My grandparents used to speak the Medinipur version of Bengali, which is quite similar to Odia, just like few people near Andhra border speak a mixture of Telugu and Odia accent. But with time, we settled in Kolkata and so, we speak the standard version of Bengali today

To be honest...Bengalis born in Odisha and Odiyas born in Bengal have tough time in accepting these BEngali -Odiya debates as we were quite beautifully charmed and tamed by both the cultures while growing up....and proudly take both the cultures on our shoulders where-ever we go...I kind of get scared when people become negatively serious abt these debates but your way of presentation was unique ...also for the first time saw someone speaking in Hindi, Bengali and Odiya on the podium..Kudos....totally laughed my heart out at some unexpected punches...awaiting for more of your content....!!!

In more modern times, Medinipur was part of Odisha and Odia was widely spoken there even in the first half of the 19th century. Today you will find people with Odia surnames in Medinipur who can't speak a single word of Odia and are thoroughly Bengali. There is even an Odia high school in Kharagpur with a statue of Gopabandhu. Coming to politics, the reason West Bengal had communist rule and not Odisha is to be found in the history of the two states after Independence. Due to the screwed up policies of Nehru, WB which was the most industrialized state rapidly deindustrialized. This created a large jobless urban class which was the perfect ground for communism. Odisha was never in that position and hence Odisha didn't turn communist.

Bengal was the seat of power in eastern india starting from gupta period ruled by king sasanka. Various art forms started here like terracotta, dokra. Also we got gi for rasogolla. And we had the greatest ports of ancient times like tamralipta which was center of trade in those times. And birthplace of many enlightened persons like chaitanya dev ( mysteriously disappeared in orissa) , ramakrishna paramhansa etc who changed the course of history

GI for Baglar Rasgolla, a disputed one as a consolation gift for Bengali sentiment. Historically it's proved that Rasgolla originated from Puri Jagannath temple centuries back and it was brought to Calcutta market by Govind Chandra Das the great great grand father of famous KC Das brand. Calcutta was the British city by that time & Rasgolla got the popularity & branding as Bengali Product. So the concept & origin of Rasgolla is from Odisha only like Chenapoda and Puri Gajja etc.

- Kalinga existed under Kharavela a millenium before Sasanka first united Vanga into a single entity.
- In the Ramayana, Kharavela was the king of Kalinga during the reign of Rama of Ayodhya (as far as I know). The Puranas refer to Kalinga many times as a rich and prosperous kingdom.
- Shrutayudhha, the king of Kalinga has a role in the Kurukshetra war. Duryodhana's wife was from Kalinga.
- The Greeks referred to the region as "Calingae" (Kalinga) and "Oretes" (Odisha). Buddhist scriptures refer to the region of "Odiyana".
- The Bengali "rekha deul" temple style is copied from the traditional Odishan temple architecture with a long deula atop a garba griha and one or more smaller pidha deula in front.
- The ancient Natya Shastra (200-500 BCE) mentions only four genres classical music: Avanti, Panchali, Dakshinatya and Odramagadhi. Odramagadhi nearly went extinct.
- There are ten classical dance forms in India, out of which only Bharatanatyam and Odissi can be traced back to the Natya Shastras.
- In Indonesia and Malaysia, a person of Indian ethnicity is referred to as a "Keling".
- The Kalinga and Chola empires spread Indian civilization throughout South East Asia. The architectures of Angkor Wat and Borobudur represent a modified hybrid between the Chola and the Kalinga styles. In general, South East Asian temple designs borrow heavily from the Kalinga deula architectural style.
- The classical dances of South East Asia (such as Thai or Balinese) have a strong resemblance to Odissi.
- The present day nation of Cambodia was founded by Kaundinya I who was from Ganjam, Odisha. A major landmark in their capital is a huge statue of Kaundinya I (or Preah Thong in Khmer) and his wife Soma.
- The Somavamsa dynasty of the Maldives was founded by Sri Baladitya, who hailed from Kalinga (Odisha)!
- Padmasambhava (or Guru Rinpoche in Tibetan) came from Oddiyana, which some historians argue is present day Odisha. Padmasambhava is revered in Tibet as next only to the Buddha himself.
- the ancient port of Tamralipta existed as back as 3rd century BCE. The Kalinga empire existed during that time, Vanga came into existence almost a thousand years later.Wikipedia maps show that around the same time that Tamralipta port was built, that whole area was a part of Kalinga! This was during the Mahameghavahana dynasty of Kalinga as well as during the Gupta period (Kalinga war was fought in 261 BCE).
- The spendor of the Konark temple, with its massive chariot sculpture at its entrance, pulled by seven horses is mesmerizing even as ruins. The Konark Yantra is a sundial in the Konark tewmple which could accurately tell the time using the position of the sun. It has 24 marks, each for an hour.
- There is a sculpture of a Odia monarch in an elephant on one side and people (resembling Africans) and a giraffe on the other side. A Baobab tree (native to Africa) appears on the background. Ancint Odia mariners visited Africa.
- The Sansrit poet Jayadeva was from Kenduli Sasan near Puri. Although Bengal tried to steal credit for it, the Archaeological Survey of India proved his Odia origin after excavating the village where he actually came from. Even the GOI issued postage stamps commemorating Jayadeva's birth near Puri, Odisha.

Okay...I'm also from Kolkata and living in Odisha from last 19yrs. I too love to speak Odia but it took me many years to understand Odia accent also...every district has their own accent and they differentiate so much among themselves like berhampuri, sambalpuri ,cuttack, sundargarhi, it was too challenging for me to make a place for a BONGALI..
Bengal invented chhana/Chhena during Portugese rule in eastern India.Chhana is a main ingredient of Rosogolla.Arter it's invention Sweet makers of Nadia district invented 1st Rosogolla in 16 th century.
After some time,Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya migrated from Nadia--Puri to live at his ancestoral land (1509-1533).And then he introduced Banglar Rosogolla(Santipur , Ranaghat Rosogolla)in Odia society. But, odia people banned chhena/chhana in their temple because it is a distorted milk product.And they killed mahaprabhu in puri.Odia reference 'Dandi Ramayan' ,written in 1467 by Balram das, which odia people are introducing as proof to claim "Banglar Rosogolla".It's origial copy is not available.Original 'Dandi Ramayan' was written in 'Tal Patra'.
Morden copy of 'Dandi Ramayan' is duplicate & pretty much distorted by Re-writers.Re-writers added "Rosgola" word in their distorted 'Dandi Ramayan'.
even,There is no mention of Rosogolla in Jagannath Prabhus bhog, in a old book like 'chaitnya charitamrita'.So you can understand how odisha is spreading disinformations.
