Lola’s amazing! I didn’t dare try experimenting with make up until I was about 14! Mind you, I went to an all girls school,in the mid 1970’s and the use of cosmetics was strictly verboten until 6th form (Years 12 & 13) and even then it had to be very light. It’s lovely to see a young person with so much confidence!

At the studio I used to teach at I would always do a "makeup day" for all the new mom's/students and I walk them through our stage makeup.
They are always surprised when they see it up close and how bold it looks up close but once I have the kiddos move to the opposite side of the studio and one of our mini stage lights beam on them they realize how much the stage lights affect their skin and appearance.
I also teach highschool and middle school theatre and we cover stage makeup basics.

Hi claudia, I'm going on a contemporary ballet workshop next week do you have any tips for picking up choreography quickly? Could you also try some contemporary ballet please?
Getting contemporary is helped by taking more contemporary technique styles like Limon, Graham, release technique to name a few. In Australia, this is hard to come by but in other parts of the world, it is easy.

Do guys also do stage makeup? On old videos I see Nureyev has quite a bit of makeup on, but what about today?
And that also makes me wonder: how did stage makeup change over time?
Yes, they do. Usually, they will do eye make up the base foundation and all the shadowing to make the bones on the face more prominent. They will not usually use red lipstick. Nothing of natural shade. Some guys even use eye shadow to cover bald patches:)

What do you mean by full-time dance for 12-13 yr olds? As in 6 days a week, several hours a day??
My daughter is 10, has been dancing since 4. She will not cut back. She goes to school and attends dance classes every night but Friday and Sunday. I don’t want her to feel like she has to dance that much but she will not hear of it. She does get stressed at times but actually handles it pretty well. It’s hard to know where to draw the line. She obviously loves it but would it be better to cut back on classes or just be there to support her and let her do it?
This is very late but just support her and let her do it. If she won't listen to any suggestion of cutting back on her classes and hours, that's a sure sign that she loves what she's doing and doesn't sound at all like she feels she has to do a lot. Even things you love can get stressful at times and it's normal because it shows that you care. Just support her and always be there for her so that she'll tell you if she wants to cut back or perhaps go professional in the future.

Please do a tutorial with hardly any makeup! My kids have base, mascara, eyeliner, blush, 2-3 shades of eye shadow, lipstick and ONE brush! That's it! Our motto is less is more because they don't have the money to buy pointe shoes let alone a lot of makeup!
