    I have a pretty good tip for anyone with a sandblasting cabinet...Whatever you use for a window will quickly get etched to the point you can't see through it by whatever abrasive you are using. The trick to keeping your window clear is to get a roll of Overhead Projector Film and use it as a sacrificial layer between your window and the cabinet. A 50ft roll cost about $14 and will last many years depending how often you use cabinet.

      I decided to use a rubber magnet to fix the transparent film.

      My idea was to use some clear cellophane packing tape, but transparency sheets for ohp works well too! My reasoning for the tape was that the gooey adhesive would act as a roughness/void filler in those plastic storage containers to make the container more transparent (like spraying a clear coat on plastic sanded to a high grit)

      I got four rolls of clear tinting film I found at a market cheap, cut a section and stick it on with water under it and squeegee the water out the water lets you line it up before the glue sticks , works fantastic and this film seems to last a long time. oh the glue is more like a static glue like the film on your mobile phone when you buy it, just peels off.

    Very nice video! What a bliss it is to hear only the tools and the action, and no music. Great workmanship, too! Absolutely inspiring!
    I worked with sandblasting once. Semi industrial - much larger cabins, of course, with real sand and with more pressure. We blasted glass as well as metal, wood, and plastic. Our cabins were totally covered on the inside in large rubber sheets, since that is the only thing that will withstand the blast when running it regularly. With the lower pressure and less work load you probably will not have the problem, otherwise that would be an idea. I would also consider painting the metal grid with silicone rubber.

    If you use a magnet before a plastic bottle it will help clean the sand from rust and iron (magnetic) particles even before they will fall down the bottle.

      Just be aware that Ferric Oxide (Fe2O3), what we call red rust, only very very weakly magnetic and magnet traps don't work on it. The black form, Ferrous Oxide (Fe3O4) is slightly magnetic and you will catch some of it. Mostly, though, magnet traps are a panacea.

    Please don't use PVC pipe like this for anything that needs to hold pressure. The PVC will turn brittle with time and can fracture under pressure, sending shards flying at high speed.
    Also, grey PVC is normally sold as electrical conduit and has no pressure rating. Try to find a metal tank for your blasting media.

    • @thenickboy
      @thenickboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the pressure he put in was just for leak testing. The compressor he's using provides continuous flow and the PVC is just a vessel that holds the medium. The compressor is blowing from the bottom and mixing with the medium out to the top. I think. Also he's in Japan, not sure the PVC colors mean the same for them.

    • @ssn608
      @ssn608 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks to me like it runs all the time..... The only thing turning airflow on and off appears to be the pressure regulator. He certainly can't have a valve in fiber reinforced clear tubing... it would be ruined by the sand/air mixture flowing through in short order. I suppose he has a shutoff valve to the air to the pressure regulator.

    The craftsmanship is exquisite. The design is practical and handsome. Truly impressive. However, please be careful with PVC. It can shatter, and if that happens when under pressure the pieces could be like shrapnel. PVC is not rated for use with air pressure. When it shatters, the results are ugly.

    Great build, not sure I would trust the plastic pressure tank over time or if it was placed near an area with uv light. I built one similar 25 yrs ago, painted the inside of mine white, cut a slot on top and added a clear plastic panel & florescent light on top. I later added 1/8" white Plexiglas to the back wall as it was getting ate up by the sand, this helped as the sand will frost it but just bounces off and still reflex light. Also exhaust your cabinet to the outside as silicosis is real.

      You are right. What he has there is a time bomb. It may not go off for a year, it may not go off i 5 years,,,,but if you waite long enough it WILL explode,,,,And PVC bombs are fragmentation anti-personnel types types, and a canister of air at 150 PSI has enough umph to blow that sand blaster, and anybody standing on front of it through a wall. ,,,, but hey, It's hos ass, I do recommend that no one visit his shop, though.

The only thing I can believe you didn't do was put a rip off film on the back side of the glass. Like a clear tint style. It's damn sure easier and cheaper than replacing the glass. Think like a race biker with vizier rips. I love the custom builds in your work shop. Great job!

    Very nice build, but I can tell you from experience, your overspray will eat away at the plywood until it blows a hole through it.
    You should coat at least the back half with something harder, steel would be best but even ceramic tiles would prolong the life of the cabinet.

    I assume you fill the hopper with sand before you connect the air supply. But nicely done. Love it.

    Anyone using this design or other designs: what would you improve or change?
    I’m mostly wondering if the dust extraction is an issue. Do dust issues vary with the type of blasting medium?
    (Obviously never use silica sand)

      Definitely get a dust extractor, best is a good cyclone on top of an (ideally quiet) shop vacuum. I use a Dust Commander on top of a Fein Dustex, works perfect and I don't have to wear earing protection.

    A very nice build of a media-blasting cabinet. All the ones I've seen have been metal and required a grounding strap due to the build up of static charge between the beads of media. You can get quite a shock while removing your hands from the gloves. Your choice of wood to construct your cabinet from eliminates this small hazard quite effectively. Great design and construction in this video!

    I do know at this point not having a table saw is almost a channel trademark of yours. BUT, I have to say it: I've never seen anyone work so hard at NOT having a table saw. Shop space was an issue for me, so I went with a Sawstop job site saw, so I can fold it up. Really accurate saw.

    Ledges in the cabinet including around the window collects grit. Large chamfers and sealed end grain helps shed grit.
    Have changeable bottom buckets for different grits and a vacuum port/hose in the cabinet for cleaning prior to grit change.
    Also cover the glass and light cover with low tack car window tint.
    All these helped my cabinet run smoothly, hope yours does as well.

      @@jonathanbetenbender307 when the tint gets abraded I change for a fresh strip(s), saves the glass getting frosted.

    Just a thought. If you blast a blank sheet and place that behind the logo, the logo should disappear and fully appear when illuminated. That would be cool to know and see.
    Thanks for the videos. I'm contemplating a SB cabinet for my tiny shop when I figure out where to put it.
    Genius!
