The average weight of a sumo wrestler is about 166 kg, with some of the heaviest weighing nearly 230 kg.
In general, fighters try to lose weight, but why do sumo wrestlers choose to get fat?
To make long stories short, it is because “weight is a great weapon.” Unlike other martial arts, sumo has no class system, so not having weight will be a major disadvantage.
However, many people misunderstand that sumo wrestlers are JUST fat.
The average body fat percentage of sumo wrestlers is said to be about 24% which is below the average for regular Japanese men. In other words, the fat is only on the outside of the body and it hides their strong muscles underneath gained through extreme training.
Also, just simply gaining weight will not make you stronger. The top sumo wrestlers, known as 横綱 yokozuna, are often below the average weight, and some of them use their short height as a weapon. Gaining too much weight can lead to knee injuries and other problems, so it is necessary to find the right body size for each individual.

I get that they probably do have a lot of muscle under that, but it’s simply unreal to say that sumo wrestlers are 24%, these mfs are morbidly obese, they are 30% plus easily. Even 24% is still considered fat and unhealthy in the fitness industry, look up a chart of body fat percentages or watch some videos and you’ll get a better visualization of body fat.

    • @peyocamps1726

Body fat% is a percentage for a reason, it is independent from the amount of muscle you have, if you are 24% body fat you are considered fat no matter how much muscle you have.

If you're decent powerlifter you can add probably like 100kg to your total without gaining any muscle by getting fat. Same in strongman. As a very novice sumo wrestler fan, I learned this lesson very quickly. Sumo's maybe a larger than your average person, but so is a football player here in america. Sumo wrestlers are built for power and short bouts. Sumos are not running long distance nor do their matches last more than a minute maybe two.
Some matches even last only 10 seconds. So think about that my fellow Americans 10 seconds and that's all you get to see if you win or lose something, sumos are built for that quick domination and the only rank system they have is their placement. Beyond that for my understanding you fight whoever is in your placement weight doesn't matter as has been explained in this video.
If you Google or search in TH-cam sumo wrestlers eating, they eat pretty healthy honestly they make big stews or soups with lots of vegetables. They watch their salt consumption, and I've never really seen them eat a whole lot of sugar.
Not to say assume wrestler couldn't eat what they want so long as they maintain weight and continue to train, but point being as that these men are athletes. They are competitors, and sure they're bigger than an average person, but their thighs are often bigger than an average person's torso. Never underestimate people based on their appearance you'll never know what they're capable of.

You have no control over how muscles end up looking once they are big, that is purely genetic. Sumo wrestlers have way more fat than most athletes, which makes them look "less sculpted".
