I think you compared between two different kind of beans here. If the beans are old and bad itself, what best can a grinder do, regardless of its price. Grinder just breaks the beans down, it doesn't add flavors. Freshly ground coffee is always a better pick rather the pre-grounds. You had to compare the same coffee beans from the same roasting batch. Pre grinded and whole beans from the same batch after a month or two, that would be a fair comparison.

yeah I just have the same questions, he kept repeating that the pre-ground coffee is two months old, but he mentioned nothing about the beans he was grinding fresh. The grinder doesn't add any flavors by itself (as long as its clean) but the size and evenness of the grind definitely matters for a smooth extraction. This test needed more scientific thinking and methodology for sure.

The problem is when each roaster has their own definition of what the grind size is. For instance your espresso grind is too fine for my nanopresso, while BT's home espresso grind is just right.
That said I hope to make the trek to Nagpur sometime to meet you folks and share a coffee with you. Your content is really great and much more approachable than the others on YT! :)

I feel like ur fresh coffee grind was too fine for a pour over. An old coffe can never beat a fresh one. Or maybe it was completely robusta. Or something.

      robusta ------------- naaah!
was slight fine but it works very well too

Does the taste of the coffee change if the ingredients are at different temperatures like the same roast tastes different when prepared with hot milk and chilled milk (with espresso) if yes then reason?

      @prabhjotschadha1153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Suppose we take light roasted coffee, i think if you brew it with less temp around 80-85, it will be under extracted and with temp around 90-95 it will give different taste. I have tried this, and it's different.

interesting results! hopefully you can repeat this test with the same coffee roasted at the same date. Maybe give it a week or two of rest to see how well the pre-ground holds up in the coffee bag

Did the cheap grinder have ceramic burrs? I guess those ones give a terrible grind consistency. I guess in India, a good cheap entry level grinder would be the timemore c2, it has steel burrs and grinds fast too. I think it was my best buy in 2021, given that I used to drink pre ground for around 8 months, the difference was great .
Im not associated with the company, just sharing my experience. Would love to upgrade to a comandate someday.

'Zarak Yousufzai ' has done a similar test for coffee taste, about 2 years back (same time this is posted)and you can find that the result is also similar.

    Great video.
One question, define cheap 😅. I started out with Hario slim mill and then shifted onto the Timemore C2. Both are sub 5K grinders in a world where hand grinders can cost 30k +
    In comparison mine is cheap.
Yet, according to a similar taste test i did (with both the grinders) the difference is very plausible. Preground coffee often gives off a very rubbery texture for me, starting at about 3 weeks from roast. Whole beans stays fresh for a month or so before falling into the same problem.
PS: it's very visible that you are using one of the sub Rs.1000 hand grinders. Still would like to know your opinion on these beginner level hand grinders.
    Thanks 😊

      haaahaha brilliant one !
the one i used was 1650 /- INR (Indian Rupee)

Excellent topic.. I haven’t invested in a decent grinder yet. So always a struggle to choose between fresh coffee + bad grinder AND stale coffee preground with professional grinder.
Follow up question: what entry level grinder would tilt the equation in favor of fresh whole bean coffee option? As in do I minimum need a Commandante or anything cheaper than that can also change the equation?

First of all thanks a lot bro for this comparison i was gonna buy a grinder similar to this which was around 1.5k in hopes of getting better coffee than the pre ground one. So money well saved there!
and also your channel is severely underrated i was flabbergasted when i saw the subscribers when compared to the information and just the quality of production your videos have.
i wish you all the very best and you’ll definitely achieve great success.

NO WAY!!! How in the coffee world a 2 month old ground coffee can beat a freshly ground, granted the cheap grinder isn’t the best but I still find it very hard to believe

my explanation will be - fine migration and the big rock boulders , the super uneven coffee extraction could be one reason.

If you have a blade grinder (blender), you can try with some technique. James Hoffman made a video on this. You can pause and play your grinds. For example: Switch on the grinder for 5 seconds, pause. Shake the grinder so the beans are mixed up and shuffled. Repeat until you achieve your grind size.

TBH - i know the answer since i did that back in '16 when i was just getting into specialty and was heading roasting for a company in India.
fresh beans - forever. in comparison to whole beans 2 months old.
assuming grinder is good and same:)

This is surprising as I thought the freshly grounded would taste much better than the pre grounded one. How long you can use this pre grounded coffee for? Also, would love to hear your thoughts about manual brewing coffee (French press /Pour over) vs. machine made coffee (espresso /Moka pot)
