Ps I’d love to watch how you’ve done smart lighting (shelly and drivers replacement) and everything you’ve mentioned in the video.
Top marks Cameron. Ive been following your videos as far back as I can remember.. I’m also in the process of getting a wee new build and have planned a big project to upgrade with a home network system including in ceiling speakers etc.. Thanks you for the great ideas. 👍🏻 looking forward to the smart lights an in ceiling projects…
Thanks for all your effort the past few months, really enjoying the videos in the new house! As for future videos, I would like to keep seeing similar update videos as things progress, and a dedicated video on converting basic led light fixtures to Zigbee controlled would be great. But I would watch all the videos you mentioned!

If you want RGB lights in kitchen make sure you get RGBW as mixed white from an RGB strip even with a diffused cover can cause problems when using knives...
Amazing work cant wait to see your audio distribution stuff, converting half my garage into a dedicated insulated server/gaming room this year and you've given lots of ideas to add to my rack setup. What constant current zigbee drivers you using? I have a couple of those fittings like yours i need to hack into HA. Happy new year look forward to the new content!
Hi Cameron, great channel and appreciate your style and information. Would appreciate the idea of telling us how to make a 'dumb' light fixture smart with Zigbee. Thanks and greetings from Holland.
I've definitely used a lot of his insults in relation to the people that have been working on this house! Thankfully nothing major but, the issues we do have are entirely down to the people doing the work being absolutely hopeless!
You picked the right time to get into Dante. They've made some major improvements to the controller app and other stuff. I do wonder where you get your ethernet crimp connectors as well. I've been looking for some that have integrated strain-relief.
First, Happy New Year. Definitely would like to see a video on how yow made the lights "smart". Also a video another video on the Shelley stuff would be great
Great update, the house looks amazing! I would love to see you cover some microtik gear as I am tempted to upgrade my ancient HP ProCurve switches so would love to hear your thoughts. Hope you had a great Christmas and Happy New Year!
Lovely overview. I've recently also looked into consolidating my switches. Assuming you pay normal EU power rates (30-40 ct/kWh), you really want to pay attention to their power usage. Some multigigabit switches with PoE can have incredibly high power consumption, even when idle and especially when they start having "many" ports (16+). I've seen 30W and above, and even 8 port 2.5gig PoE with a 10g upling and only POE+ can be like 18-20, and those numbers are without any connected devices. Just for reference, at over 40 €-ct/kWh I'd pay over 100€ per year for those 30W.
I immediately recognized that Tesira. I've got one in my office at work that I had pulled from a room because the power supply had failed. Biggest issue is that they use a special one that is kinda rare and a tad on the expensive side. I just bypassed it in hardware since the conference features in that room weren't used anymore, and we're planning an upgrade in it anyways.
Would be great to see more update videos! Largely due to watching your content over the last few years I have now got my own Home Assistant instance and have got my old IKEA Zigbee bulb and remote connected up directly with ZHA, without the need for the very poor IKEA hub… I also now have a Shelly RGBW2 which I will be wiring into my existing RGB strip…
Hi Cameron! Cool to see the setup growing fast :). Can I suggest you move the speaker patch panel to the bottom half of the rack, near the audio matrix/amps? The very big speak-on connectors and cables look weirdly out-of place mixed with the network patch panels. Happy new year!!
I could, although the idea is to keep all the cables entering the rack from the rest of the house towards the top of the rack rather than snaking fixed cables around the rack.
Happy New Year Cameron! Yes please to LED light "smart" adaptations. And also, the black free standing shelving you have in your garage, Is that from Ikea as well? Thanks!!
MikroTik stuff is great! Currently having it running in my home and am using it on the road aswell. (using it for remotecontrol apps/screenshare, I do live sound/light and those massive LED screen stuff). The 100eu metal AP i've got is able to withstand 5000 people/phones, and me being like 70 meters from it having 0 dropouts. Didn't have an AP yet for that price giving me those results/reliability
I'm currently running a single Ruckus R650 access point, currently just sitting on my TV bench in the living room. I'm planning on replacing this with a few separate ceiling mounted APs throughout the house - cables are all in place so just need to find the time/budget to get the APs. Potentially wanting to try out some MikroTik APs as part of a "Whole MikroTik Home Network" project although while they're solid, they aren't necessarily cutting edge for people needing extreme WiFi performance. Also tempted to look into Grandstream APs as an affordable option with the controller embedded in the APs themselves.
Yes to pretty much all you said, the under cabinet lights, the shelly smart outdoor light conversion and the audio network plus the new audio conference thingy you have in the rack...plenty of content to film with ya new camcorder, Cam😅
Hi, try out WLED with some pixel LED strips (each LED is addressable so you can create animations along the strip light), I've done this in my kitchen it's a great fun project!
I will eventually, initial plan is to get everything working first through the Home Assistant UI along with things like physical smart switches and remote controls but I'll then look into touch screens. I actually ran some CAT 6 cable to behind some downstairs light switches in preparation for PoE touchscreens.
I love UniFi gear and do cover it on my channel, but I want to try other options as well. I feel a lot of networking TH-cam channels focus almost exclusively on UniFi as if it's the only option, I want to cover a wider range.
I built it myself, it's just a basic Intel N100 motherboard, nothing particularly fancy - I just wanted something rack mountable with real SSD storage and a bit more power than something like a Raspberry Pi.
Did you make the home assistant face plate also? I currently run home assistant via docker on a unraid setup I've been toying with the idea of separating it from unraid, but couldn't really see anything that was rack mountable. What chassis did you use for the n100
Great video again! Have you considered Philips Hue Tap Dial for your light “switches”? I use them in my home, they work with ZHA or Z2MQTT and fit nicely over a UK single back box. I just use a wago in the back box to permanently live the Zigbee lamps
During the new camera segment/chapter - there's like a weird shape or mask across the left two Ikea boxes where they seem pixelated. Same for the tall slim box next to the ladder. Really odd!
Thanks.. aye that sounds like a plan. although I haven’t personally used Mikrotik. I have heard their systems are very good. I’m in the process of getting my wee new build and have plans to go down the Unifi route.. 😁
UniFi is definitely a great option, I'm only using other systems here purely to play with them and to provide video content about them (since there's so many TH-cam channels that ONLY focus on UniFi out there) but if you just want a high end home network that works reliably without much hassle, then UniFi is by far my favourite option.
These were the exact drivers I used: www.domadoo.fr/en/connected-lighting/7062-sunricher-driver-led-dimmable-65w-zigbee-30-65w-2-sorties-105301590001.html. However, it's important to make sure the replacement driver is suitable for your light. Your existing driver will either be constant current or constant voltage, so your new one will need to be the same type and either the same voltage or current rating as the old one also ensuring that it can handle the power of your light fitting. The driver I linked above is constant current and uses a phone app to send configuration (including a current limit) to the driver using NFC. Other drivers will have a set of DIP switches or jumpers to configure them. I plan on doing a dedicated video on this in the future.
They were all from CPC but most pro/live audio places will sell them. They particular ones I used are from the Neutrik FXX series, I'm using a mix of 2 pole and 4 pole connectors depending on if the zone is stereo or mono.
Audio is solid in this video , only thing I noticed was in the first 3-4 mins of the video there is a lot of image noise in the bottom left over your ikea cardboard boxes . Other than that the new camcorder looks great.
Yeah, the noise was an an editing issue thankfully. Glad about the audio - I actually messed up the levels and ended up with some really bad clipping so had to restore it with iZotope RX 11's De-Clip plugin so should be even better in future videos when I've not had to do that!
Hi Cameron, great channel fantastic content. Quick question building a new house and want to use hikvision cameras and they're villa station pack but can it be used with unifi home network gear? Would really appreciate your input. Cheers
I can't see why it wouldn't work with UniFi's networking gear, but you'd probably want to use some sort of third party NVR rather than UniFi Protect. UniFi Protect only recently launched support for third party cameras and it's still in its early stages and doesn't support things like motion events with them so I wouldn't rely on it right now.
@camerongray1515 Cheers Cameron appreciate the response. Trying to keep costs down by doing it myself and your videos are a great help. Can you recommend any third party NVRs??
Really interested how you setup your biamp to work with home assistant. I have 2 tesiraforte and a ex-mod combined with two ada-ptm 1645 16 channel 8 zone amplifiers. I use the tesira to drive stereo audio and also 7.1 to my TV rooms. I use hdanywhere as my tv distribution system. We have very similar setups.
Yeah, it's a great TV but without local dimming it's definitely not equivalent to an OLED/Mini LED TV in terms of quality. It's great for a kitchen where I don't want the look of a regular TV but not something I'd necessarily use as a primary TV.
Once again a master piece of a video For your switch problem have you thought of looking into ubiquity switches as you can also use the ubiquity APs and cameras alongside them.
I love UniFi gear and do cover it on my channel, but I want to try other options as well. I feel a lot of networking TH-cam channels focus almost exclusively on UniFi as if it's the only option, I want to cover a wider range.
I can't remember the exact name but I got it from Dunelm, it was on clearance so suspect they don't sell it now. Only warning I'd give with any sort of exposed fillament light like that is that you should really only use it as a dimmed accent light and not the only light source in a room - when the bulbs are at full brightness they are very blinding to look at. I have smart bulbs in mine so they are permenantly set at a relatively dim level and only really used when dining.etc, the downlights are the primary source of light in the room.
They aren't networked in any way, but they have a 12v trigger input that will turn them on when 12v is applied and then turn them off when it's taken away. Would be relatively easy to build something to interface this with HA. Anything else such as audio routing and volume control is handled by the Tesira DSP, the amps are purely amplifiers.
Out of curiosity - are you running Frigate with latest kernel? I'm experiencing issues with accessing coral with the kernel 6.8 (I built the driver but it seems it is not working on 6.8 kernel) so if you solved this could you share how? Thanks!
I could, but that would add additional complexity and points of failure whereas CCTV is the sort of thing I'd want to keep as a self contained, set and forget solution. The NAS is also SSD based and prioritises performance over raw storage capacity whereas chucking a couple of 8 TB HDDs into an NVR will be a much more cost effective solution.
Nope, they were just the best value option I could find at the time on eBay that had enough channels along with some sort of auto power off/trigger features. Unlike other Control 4 gear, these don't have any sort of network connectivity so don't have any issues using them as a DIYer without a Control 4 dealer.
I would love to see a video on the new camcorder - have you also got a dji osmo pocket type device - i think I saw something similar in the reflections of some of your recent videos - i would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on that too :D (completely fair enough though if not enough people are enthusiastic about this topic to justify making a video)
Well spotted! Yep, I have a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 that I bought shortly after moving to record the cabling installation stuff. It's a great option for where I need something I can fit in a pocket and use in tight spaces, and the wireless mic transmitter that connects directly to the Pocket 3 and lets me use my usual Sennheiser MKE2 lav mic is great!
Also wouldn't mind the videos in this kind of format, don't worry about the frame too much. You know how well videos do on the channel so if tutorial type videos do well then show a complete process for example the under cabinet lighting, how you run the wires down the cabinet and mount the LED underneath etc and then show how youll get it onto home assistant and set up the yaml and automation if youll have any.
Cameron, do you have a discord channel or any other community? I’ve often thought it would be great for your community of followers (me included) to talk tech!
It's a nice idea and I've considered it in the past, but right now I'm so flat out I can barely even keep on top of my own emails and messages from friends and family, no way I'd be able to dedicate enough time to participate in any sort of Discord community!
You ranted about having to do stuff yourself several times. Unfortunately I have to agree with you. Even when you're trying to pay money it can be hard to get stuff done properly...
I think I'll probably end up either keeping it around for if I ever do want to do more creative shots, or dismantle the rig to keep the S5 as a stills camera and use the Video Assist as an external HDMI recorder.
I had the exact same boiler in my previous house - the new build special. It at least has OpenTherm capability, but watch out for delayed ignition issues.
You can point the white sub just straight instead of this janky angle. I am sure you know human ears cannot locate the source of such low frequencies anyhow. And especially not that tiny angle you set it up at. It could look much cleaner and better if you straighten it and will sound exactly the same.
We have the Panasonic X1500 at Work and i can tell you its terrible...We dont have the Audio issues but when Shotting TV Stuff it has terrible Noise in the Video especially indoors
Thankfully not, Persimmon weren't even a consideration due to the fact the only ISP available is owned by Persimmon themselves and they don't offer any sort of Openreach/CityFibre/OFNL connections! That said, all the housebuilders probably use the same subcontractors, it really just comes down to whether the site team actually keep an eye on the quality of things and correctly manage the trades which definitely hasn't been happening here!
I love UniFi gear and do cover it on my channel, but I want to try other options as well. I feel a lot of networking TH-cam channels focus almost exclusively on UniFi as if it's the only option, I want to cover a wider range.
Power use is very manageable, and will be even lower once I implement auto power off of the AV equipment. Not exactly sure where you're getting "poor features" from?

The extension lead at 17:19 with something unplugged in, if you are going to use it uncoil it, its a fire hazard left coiled up.

The Frame TV looks great. Just wish it was OLED. Been back and forth about whether to get one.
Yeah, it's a great TV but without local dimming it's definitely not equivalent to an OLED/Mini LED TV in terms of quality. It's great for a kitchen where I don't want the look of a regular TV but not something I'd necessarily use as a primary TV.
Once again a master piece of a video
For your switch problem have you thought of looking into ubiquity switches as you can also use the ubiquity APs and cameras alongside them.
I love UniFi gear and do cover it on my channel, but I want to try other options as well. I feel a lot of networking TH-cam channels focus almost exclusively on UniFi as if it's the only option, I want to cover a wider range.
Can you share the name of the dining room lights?
I can't remember the exact name but I got it from Dunelm, it was on clearance so suspect they don't sell it now. Only warning I'd give with any sort of exposed fillament light like that is that you should really only use it as a dimmed accent light and not the only light source in a room - when the bulbs are at full brightness they are very blinding to look at. I have smart bulbs in mine so they are permenantly set at a relatively dim level and only really used when dining.etc, the downlights are the primary source of light in the room.
@camerongray1515 Ah well appreciate the reply - they look really good will try and find a similar style
"Do you want a video?" yes, feed the content goblins.
What the ikea desk??? As to be honest I would love to order a couple for me and my wife in our garage ??
They're part of their "BROR" range
Can you control the triad amps with HA?
They aren't networked in any way, but they have a 12v trigger input that will turn them on when 12v is applied and then turn them off when it's taken away. Would be relatively easy to build something to interface this with HA. Anything else such as audio routing and volume control is handled by the Tesira DSP, the amps are purely amplifiers.
Out of curiosity - are you running Frigate with latest kernel? I'm experiencing issues with accessing coral with the kernel 6.8 (I built the driver but it seems it is not working on 6.8 kernel) so if you solved this could you share how? Thanks!
No issues here although I'm running Debian 12 with Kernel 6.1. The drivers from the Google CoralTPU APT repository worked fine
Why not use an iscsi target from the nas to nvr?
I could, but that would add additional complexity and points of failure whereas CCTV is the sort of thing I'd want to keep as a self contained, set and forget solution. The NAS is also SSD based and prioritises performance over raw storage capacity whereas chucking a couple of 8 TB HDDs into an NVR will be a much more cost effective solution.
Triad Amps? Do you work for a Control4 dealer?
Nope, they were just the best value option I could find at the time on eBay that had enough channels along with some sort of auto power off/trigger features. Unlike other Control 4 gear, these don't have any sort of network connectivity so don't have any issues using them as a DIYer without a Control 4 dealer.
They are pretty good amps in a 1u form factor, much better than the previous Control4 branded versions that all failed within a year!
Id say make a video on whatever you asked us if we want a video on it. All seemed interesting enough for me, maybe not about the camcorder though :P
Delightful :)
What is the name of units from ikea in your garage?
They're part of the "BROR" system, really happy with them but just bear in mind that they take an absolute age to assemble!
Hey cameron if you're wiling to sell the older camera i'd like to buy it the way It is.
I think I'll probably end up either keeping it around for if I ever do want to do more creative shots, or dismantle the rig to keep the S5 as a stills camera and use the Video Assist as an external HDMI recorder.
@@camerongray1515 Thanks for answering man, appreciate.
Mikrotik is grate! If gigabit is enough CRS328-24P-4S+RM is just grate PoE switch.
Can I ask what boiler you have, think will get Tado too like you recently installed
It's an Ideal Logic Combi ESP1 35 - Nothing special or something I'd have personally picked, just what came with the house.
@@camerongray1515 choosing boiler is pain, keep changing my mind!
I had the exact same boiler in my previous house - the new build special. It at least has OpenTherm capability, but watch out for delayed ignition issues.
A 2nd channel might be a good idea for other videos as you mentioned, regardless I'd sub to both
You can point the white sub just straight instead of this janky angle. I am sure you know human ears cannot locate the source of such low frequencies anyhow. And especially not that tiny angle you set it up at. It could look much cleaner and better if you straighten it and will sound exactly the same.
house builder is 5 star. out of 10.
We have the Panasonic X1500 at Work and i can tell you its terrible...We dont have the Audio issues but when Shotting TV Stuff it has terrible Noise in the Video especially indoors
Not a persimmon house is it, seen a very similar thing in theirs 😂😅
Thankfully not, Persimmon weren't even a consideration due to the fact the only ISP available is owned by Persimmon themselves and they don't offer any sort of Openreach/CityFibre/OFNL connections! That said, all the housebuilders probably use the same subcontractors, it really just comes down to whether the site team actually keep an eye on the quality of things and correctly manage the trades which definitely hasn't been happening here!
Get ubiquiti 24 port enterprise
I love UniFi gear and do cover it on my channel, but I want to try other options as well. I feel a lot of networking TH-cam channels focus almost exclusively on UniFi as if it's the only option, I want to cover a wider range.
@ very true and I guess the reason everyone has it is because for most people they are then best fit and are “responsibly” well priced
6 Minutes after release, first comment, let's see about this
Too much power used for such poor features
Power use is very manageable, and will be even lower once I implement auto power off of the AV equipment. Not exactly sure where you're getting "poor features" from?
