This makes total sense. I always tell my juniors to focus on skill development rather than degrees. I'm Bcom graduate (2011 batch), now working as a Microsoft solution architect, in the first year itself I understood that commerce is not the field for me, but continued it because without a degree I won't get my first job. I started learning html and c# online, then slowly moved into server based technologies, upon clearing my graduation (47% in tybcom) I worked as a network engineer, got CCNA certification. Upon parental pressure joined MCA, the syllabus was so outdated that I left the class midway. Joined Wipro right after that and got trained in Business Intelligence Applications. Again because of parental pressure joined Excise Department, it was such an eye opener for me, it tested my patience to such an extent that I quit during my probation and went straight to an IT company and kept on updating my skills. Long story short, please focus on your passion and keep updating yourself, degrees are only for telling people that you are a graduate or a post graduate, it will help you to get your first job, that's it, doesn't matter which degree, what college or university (except the blacklisted ones). It's the skill that matters. One of my colleagues is a Hotel Management graduate and he's a solution architect. There are many stories like these. Please share this video with everyone. Mr Banerjee is doing a fantastic job.

I appeared for JEE without much preparation and thought of an year drop, but I got into a good college(not IIT) within close proximity of myself with Electrical Engineering as my stream. Not boasting or something but now I am in my 4th year and I have 4 job offers as a software engineer which is not related to my stream. I know I have a long way to go, but I can assure everyone that if you work on your skills rather than just relying on some institution's reputation you can succeed too.

As someone who hire and manages teams of web developers (both Backend and Frontend) across multiple regions and multiple businesses both inside and outside India, I totally agree with this analysis of lack of skill sets that really impacts a starter/junior coming into the industry. I really do not think a Uni degree has that much of an attraction to hiring managers/recruiters (like myself), in contrast I focus on the fundamental soft skills that shows ones ability to provide continuous contribution towards a success of a business/team.
Upskilling is not a good to have, but is now fast becoming a major requirement in any workplace, given the speed of technological and industrial changes occurring across the board. Even local businesses and vendors had to adapt to internet, mobile technologies, web technologies and working online & remote, to meet consumer and market expectations. So if you do not upskill yourself in todays day and age, specially outside a Uni degree, then you will struggle to remain relevant to the market.
