That's exactly what I did on that descent. You should expect that people will sprint to the front in order to supertuck down the grade so I would be watching everyone like a hawk at that point in the race. With a small group like that ahead of you it's less work to chase back on the flat than on the descent. If it were a large group then you have to call out the fire service immediately. Great finish.
It’s suck a good move Paul, caught me completely unaware! I’ll definitely watch out for this next time - you’re 100% right if it was a bigger group I would have been in serious trouble mate! 👍🏻
That was a really strong race mate great bit of climbing there m, I also think the short burst at the top of the climb was brilliant tactic 3-4 seconds for that guys and everyone else had to work for 8-10 to get back on Keep up the great work looking stronger already
Thanks mate much appreciated! All the training is making the racing more fun - I just need to keep reminding myself this! It was an excellent move, caught me out this time but hopefully I’ll spot it for the next one 🤞🏻 hope you’ve had a good week mate 👍🏻
That's how I loose many races. I get to the top with heavier riders who push the same W/kg, then get destroyed downhill because even in the draft at VO2max I can't follow someone 20kg heavier who's getting the aerotuck.
Thanks Hector 👍🏻 it was a great move, definitely caught me snoozing after the climb! I’ve accepted your friend request (invited you back) I normally race at the moment on a Thursday from 5:30pm (UK time) - have a look out and we’ll hopefully have the chance to race together 👍🏻
Really enjoyed watching that Olly - agreed it’s a great course (love that hill) and a brilliant opportunistic sprint down the other side of the hill by your competitor, making sure you are exhausted for the run in. Good racing.
Thanks A! It’s such a good route - I’d love to see you get involved in the ZRL this autumn / winter - I think you’d be great plus you’ve been working hard on your fitness also 👍🏻 It was a good move, just happy I made it back on and had enough for a little dig at the end 😊
Great racing with you Ollie. Looking at the stats afterwards everyone put in a super performance, and was some of my highest power ever across the board.
It’s a great course, I think Zwift did a really good job with all the routes following the most recent road additions. Hopefully ZRL can add some of them in again for the next few seasons but glad to hear they’ve used it already 👍🏻
Great video Ollie and I have to say I smiled when I saw that guy sprint off because it's what I do lol 800w as soon as you turn right to go down the hill. I've made back 10 seconds on people because of how heavy I am! Glad the trainings going well mate
Thanks Phil, hope you’ve had a good week 👍🏻 haha it’s such a good move, I was so close to giving up on the chase as well so a bit lucky there really 😎 I’m sat on the trainer right now doing 2x20 at sweet spot and it’s painful! Hopefully it’ll pay off though. Have a great weekend mate 👍🏻
It must be an absolute nightmare when this happens! The gap seems to open up very quickly on the downhill. Yeah it’s a tricky one re the physics on the climbs - I don’t know much about it but it’d be good to get insight from Zwift on how it’s all calculated 👍🏻
Great race and really strong on the long climb! I accidentally broke away on that descent recently - I pushed for a few seconds at the top to get into supertuck quickly and then had 5sec clear lead at the bottom! In my race I had to do the climb again so I let the blob catch up, but it felt weird to be out front for free!
Thanks very much Craig 👍🏻 It’s a really good move and definitely one I’m going to try in the future (if I can)! I can’t imagine having to do that climb again after doing it once, I would have let the blob catch too if it were me! 👍🏻
Thanks mate 👍🏻 Hope you’re all well and have enjoyed the summer so far. Looking forward to autumn Zwift racing - hopefully we’ll have a few races together 👍🏻
I think the 'new' rules for supertucking does make it overpowered on the descent down the Grade. Everyone should be able to tuck on such a steep descent on a wide road. Great stuff, man, looking good for ZRL.
Cheers Rob and hope you’re well mate 👍🏻 yeah I was a little surprised at how quick the gap opened! Looking forward to autumn racing on Zwift, I’ll never be as good as you mate but it we would be good to get a little closer! 👍🏻
If I were a betting man, I'd say that the person sprinting over the top of the hill to start the descent was both (a)trying to get into a supertuck so he could have his own rest down the grade and (b)likely someone on the lighter side who is doing this to avoid being the one getting dropped on the descent since we lighter riders struggle with getting swarmed on the descents.
You could be right there, I think it was a lighter rider who eventually ended up winning the race. It’s a good move, caught me completely off guard! 👍🏻
Well done! That descent is a difference maker, especially for the heavier riders. They can put 10 seconds into the group easy. Steering can also be a big advantage. Are you planning on getting steering?
Thanks Roy 👍🏻 yeah it’s amazing how quickly that gap opened! I’m still on the fence with the steering - I think it’d be cool to have but where I currently use ATV I’d rather not pair via the Bluetooth on the phone. I was toying with the idea of the zwift bike as this would solve the connectivity issue 👍🏻
You've got to put in a kick atop almost any decent. There isn't much ti be gained by pressing hard on the pedals when going downhill, but if you kick, you just gain a few kph. Same.on the road. The climb doesn't finish at the top - it finishes when you're going downhill 😅
I wish I could race like that! My FTP is 311 and a slightly heavy rider at 83kg but I cannot race well lol. I always get dropped on climbs and can never stick with the lead group. I feel I should be a C cat racer but swift set me as a B :(
You’ve got an excellent FTP 👍🏻 and you’re really not that heavy at all - I used to be around 83kgs a few years back! Maybe try some flatter races as you should be right there with the front pack 👍🏻
Hey Alex, hope you’re all good 👍🏻 yeah I’m definitely doing ZRL, I’ve just seen they’ve released the FRR tour details today so will check it out. I’ll do as many FRR as possible, tour France is always a good one to kick off with! What about you?
It isn’t shady. If you study courses, you should consider attacking just before a downhill to get a gap, especially if the course is like this near the end. If you get a jump, it is harder to catch back on as speeds increase. Btw… I don’t think the winner isn’t really a C cat going by his 1 minute power and below in that race.
It was an excellent move and definitely caught me off guard, I’ll know for next time on this course. You’re right about studying the courses, also something I need to get better at. He did have quite the kick, hopefully the racing score categories will be fully out soon 🤞🏻👍🏻
Great race. I see a lot of people do that on that part of the downhill. I feel like it’s a bit of a wasted effort. If you can’t follow through once you get on the flats since it’s such a long way to finish most often people end up catching up.
Thanks very much 👍🏻 I agree - I think having a burst of power at the top and then again just before it flattens at the bottom would probably help gain even more of an advantage as that’s where I was able to get back on. It also depends on group numbers and whether the from my work together as I was surprised the two behind also caught back on! 👍🏻
Everyone cry's about light riders I'm a light rider downhill you get smoked so it evens out. lose weight if you want to be a lighter rider. As for the 45kg riders its hard to believe. You have to power downhill being a light rider. 14w a kg lool
Yeah you’re right, most of the moaning is done when a lighter rider starts to get away up an incline but it does even out when going downhill and must be annoying having to continue to pedal when everyone else gets a break 👍🏻
They got over 57 and into the super tuck. Thats all you needed to do..
Good content on this channel!
It was a good move, just never expected it there! I’ll know for next time 👍🏻 thanks for your kind words, appreciate that 😊
Next time I‘ll get dropped, I‘ll call it shady tactic too. 😂
Haha 😜 bit of tongue in cheek, good move really!

It’s super tough especially when you get to the top and expect a rest only to fall behind. 👍🏻
Nice Race! And great tactics by the guys raising the power down the hill!
It looks like we are on the same category, sent you a friend request on zwift, hopefully race you one of this days. Keep up doing great things.

Thanks Kris you too - it was a really fun one 👍🏻 It was super competitive but that what makes us stronger, congratulations on the win mate- superb 👌🏻
This climb was actually in ZRL Summer Showdown as a finishing climb in a 40K + route.
It’s a great course, I think Zwift did a really good job with all the routes following the most recent road additions. Hopefully ZRL can add some of them in again for the next few seasons but glad to hear they’ve used it already 👍🏻

I'm a lightweight rider and encounter this all the time. But on the climbs physics are just not right.
It must be an absolute nightmare when this happens! The gap seems to open up very quickly on the downhill. Yeah it’s a tricky one re the physics on the climbs - I don’t know much about it but it’d be good to get insight from Zwift on how it’s all calculated 👍🏻

Looking strong Ollie! Great to see the training is working, congrats on the podium mate 👊💪💪💪

I can’t believe I watched this whole video just to find out that the “shady tactic” was peddling harder than everyone else.
Haha 🤣 downhill as well, what a move! 👍🏻
Earlier today I watched a video of ride with Gerben en the same dude on the same downhill did the same dirty tactics
It’s definitely sneaky but works! Did the person end up winning? 👍🏻
@@notpogiI’m not sure but he did drop Gerben

I’m just amazed there’s a “tactic” that you didn’t see coming.
Shakespeare wasn’t perfect either mate 🤣
Exact same thing happened to me on this course! The video is on my channel.
It’s a superb move for sure - I’ll go and check out the video 👍🏻
Great tactic!
It was! It definitely caught me off guard! 👍🏻

You’re absolutely right, I need to change my mentality to think that the climb finishes after that little kick downhill 👍🏻
It’s a great tactic. I use that one often.
It really caught me off guard but is a great one to use 👍🏻
I wish I could race like that! My FTP is 311 and a slightly heavy rider at 83kg but I cannot race well lol. I always get dropped on climbs and can never stick with the lead group. I feel I should be a C cat racer but swift set me as a B :(

I am doing all 4 FRR tours and off course all the ZRL races. Oddly enough I am really looking forward to the autumn and winter 😂
That’s a massive commitment mate good on you! Yeah me too, I enjoy FRR and ZRL I can’t wait!

He did a Mohoric down that decent!
It was a super move - very Mohoric like!
Great race. I see a lot of people do that on that part of the downhill. I feel like it’s a bit of a wasted effort. If you can’t follow through once you get on the flats since it’s such a long way to finish most often people end up catching up.

Yep thats just gamecraft, good tactic
It was a great tactic, caught me completely off guard 👍🏻
With my weight I can nearly hit 60mph and get around 7-10 second lead over others.
Wow that’s very quick - it’s such a good move and I bet catches a few out 👍🏻
