If you think you are going to live the western life style in the Philippines think again because unless you have a pocket full of money forget it because it isn't going to happen . There is so much you need to know about the Philippines and the only way is to come and experience the life here . Does not matter what you see on TH-cam come here and it will open your eyes .. Hospitals are out to rip you off with very little treatment . We have experienced it ..

I retired in August, and leave Friday to return to Jax USA. I took 6 months and traveled and lived well, but also like a Pinoy and see the underside of life here. It was a great 6 months, and I may live here starting next year, but I appreciate Jax Florida and the USA a lot more now, than before. If not for the women in the Philippines? I would not live there, but stay in the USA or Colombia. Colombia cheaper cost of living and a lot less dysfunctional. I have been shocked at the overall level of dysfunctionality of the Philippines compared not to the west, but to the Third World. Love the people, but the story gets weaker after done with their smiles and family values.

"Everything that's going on over here" is only for people watching the news. The reality is 99% of us live in great communities and life is good. Those of us who are retured and own our house aren't feeling inflation. 1/3 of the inflation number is housing. Our house value goes up with inflation. People paying rent, yeah, not too cool. But that's a lifestyle choice made years ago to be a renter.
I'm not in a hurry, but planing to move to SE Asia next year. Not really looking forward to moving, but that's my deal. I've always moved to different cities, different career, every 7-15 years. Started in the Army. Found it was good for me to move. The adventure. Learning to adapt. I've always learned to love where I moved to and will do the same in SE Asia. Millions of people love living there, I can too.
Most important I'll have a very good budget so that should solve most issues.

My Father was in the USAF and was stationed at Clark AFB in the mid 60's. He brought us over and we lived off-base in Balibago for a couple of years. The streets of Angeles city and the entire Pampanga area were dirt roads. The locals lived predominantly in nipa huts. It was dirty and gritty even in those days but as a 6 and 7 year old boy it didn't bother me. Everything was new and exciting. I loved it there and always enjoyed myself.
Fast forward to 2022, I was 63 years old and was wanting to relive my youth so I took off on a solo mission to travel around the world for 5 months. My first stop was the Philippines and I spent a month there traveling around the islands. Of course everything had changed in 55 years but it hadn't changed at all. The Philippines is still dirty and gritty, the poverty hasn't changed, it's still blazing hot and humid (not much different than SW Florida but turned up a notch). I did enjoy myself but I realized looking through my 63 year old jaded eyes that SE Asia isn't any more of a paradise than here in SW Florida. The west is more expensive but it's comparatively clean and things work. I came to the conclusion that retiring in a third world country or developing nation isn't for me.

One of the top heart hospitals in the country is near my residence. There are world class steakhouses and seafood restaurants a short drive away. At 72 I'm playing with house money. I spent 48 days on a fact finding mission. Started in Manila, the tourist areas of Makati. Then moved around, Malata, Paranaque, EDSA areas by the mall of Asia, Baclaran, Quezon city and some other areas. From there I went to AC and partied, check out Clarke. Next was Zambales, Subic free port, Olongapo city, Barretto, San Marcelino, etc. Finally I woke up one day at Blue Rock resort and said I've had enough. I walked a lot that was good. But my day revolved around meals. I drank a lot sitting around and looking. Also this was the rainy season, it rained everyday. I returned to the USA. The Philippines is great but I always felt a little out of place, a little lost. Everyone wanted money because for a lot of people it is a day to day survival. My only hobby is golf. I played at Clarke with a caddy so that was fun. But golf is expensive there and not that many courses around.
As for the ladies, well I am 60 years old and in good shape, I had plenty of offers, but she would be a dependent. Also the age gap felt kind of silly to me. I have very little in common with a 25 year old Pinay. Still if you g women is what you want you can definitely find it. I hope to return to the PI some day. Maybe my next trip will be different.
I first landed in the PI when I was a 21 year old boot Marine. Had a blast in those days and have thought about the PI ever since and I went back through the decades and was a two week millionaire.
But the dream of retirement to the Philippines is always there. I think subic Freeport is the place for me but it's twice as expensive as out in town.
    We'll see what happens.

Hi Mark, I was in Dumaguete for the month of January this year, 2024. I felt VERY uncomfortable with the ARMED security guards at banks. I had a difficult time finding an ATM that would dispense cash even though I notified my bank that I would be in the Philippines for the month. The whole country strikes me as a modern-day feudal fiefdom run primarily for the benefit of a few wealthy, well-connected families like the Marcos and the Aquinos. (I see Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos' son is now president of the country. Why am I not surprised?)
To my mind (as limited as it is) the state of driving around the country says a lot about the society. To put it bluntly driving is simply chaos. Most drivers ignore and flaunt the traffic laws with idiot impunity. I was almost hit from behind while I was walking down the street (needless to say no sidewalk) by an idiot driving, not only on the wrong side of the street, but almost up on the curb.
I also felt like my presence was resented. I'm an older American (66) and I sensed a considerable amount of hostility and resentment toward me. It wasn't until after I had been there for a couple of weeks that I got clued in to the rather ugly and exploitative dynamic that goes on there with older, retired American men seeking to take advantage of desperatly poor young Filipina women. These are often men who have a wife and grown children back in the States and are looking for some adventure. I'm not married and I wasn't seeking to exploit some young woman but it seemed to me that many of the locals lumped me into that category. In short I was damn glad to leave the country. I don't think I'll ever return.
I intend to watch your video "Philippine Thinking." I'm convinced Filippinos don't think like Westerners. It's not that they're stupid. I believe that because they never went through the European Enlightenment they see the world differently than we do. I'm not saying they are wrong. Just different.

Most westerners move to the Philippines for the younger women and cheaper cost of living. They are usually not successful in the west, being divorced, low income, and/or lonely. You gain some financial freedom and can be busy with all the young women available, but lose many other freedoms such as civil rights, 2nd amendment, many hobbies, lack of variety in cuisine, unreliable power, uncomfortable weather, poor healthcare, harassment by beggars, government corruption, etc.

I total agree that the healthcare is really bad here not just for foreigners for Filipinos too. I am a retired RN with 15 years of emergency room experience and my Tatay was hospitalized and they wanted to do all kinds of unnecessary expensive test on him that wasn't needed to diagnose him. So when my wife sister called to the house I asked to speak to the Dr and he couldn't explain why some of the test was needed ($). But then the hospital got mad at me and told my sister n law that if she don't want to follow what the Dr ordered she can unhook her father and take him home. In USA you can refuse any medical care by signing a waiver. Another time I went to the ER and they had to insert an IV into my arm. So the nurse touched the site several times with her finger then tried to insert the needle. I quickly stopped her and said "now, you know you just contaminated that site. You need to clean it again before inserting that needle." I got a really nasty look... lol My bill was 6000 pesos about $115 US dollars and I thought that was good. Then 6 months later my wife went in for the same exact thing, same treatment and her bill was 2800 pesos... The I was like "hey they cheated me." lol

I was 59 in April and when I think about retiring, I think "hang on a minute." My current job is a full-time position but that is 12 hours a week with over two months paid holiday every 16 weeks. There are places I'd rather live permanently than Korea, but this country has been very good to me over the last twenty years. And on the vacation time which is a lot I get to travel. Also, retirement can mean inactivity which is a killer in itself. I'll have a couple of pensions when I choose to retire but won't be in the financial place I am now. People should think hard and long about where they want to be in their older days like you say and shouldn't just dive in particularly if you've had no real experience of living in Asia or the country you think is your heaven. My father died at 72 from dreaded prostate cancer and because of that I live life to the full, right here right now.

I have to call bullshit on this one. For every expat that has had a bad experience, there is another expat where everything has worked out great. Everything depends on the expat’s situation expectations for the PI. To easy to reference 2 stories that did not work out. Far more have worked out than have not. 😊

You covered the topic well. This might not be the place to be if you have health concerns. I fortunately do have good health as do the other members of my family, and also have a decent amount of medical training and experience like you. I don't worry as much as the typical expat, but I'm not a typical expat. For those who can't take care of their own minor medical issues and stabilize for travel it's not a safe place to be. They might get by in the cities, but the province life isn't a good fit. I'll surely die eventually and probably sooner than I would with western standards of care, but it's something I accept to live the life I live.
I tell everyone the same thing, if you aren't willing to rough it a bit, the philippines isn't the place for you. It can be paradise, or it can be hell depending on the person. Military guys from combat MOS's will tend to do well here, but office types have a high risk of failure.

If you're financially stable and can afford to live an upper middle class life. Philippines is all good. My wife and I have a beach front home in Samar. We have a townhouse inside Clark Freeport zone. We have trustworthy family members who work for us and stay with us at all times. Beautiful country with beautiful kind hearted locals. I love this one! Ha, been visiting PI on a regular basis since 2010, got a little place WAY down south. Back in 2011 or so I got the travelers gut bad, ran to the hospital they gave me a script and all is well about 72 hours later. 2023 I got something a little more than the travelers, well I didn’t want to waste time at the Dr, nor did I have the patience… felt like a zpak would take care of it. Went to SM and a pharmacy… sorry sir you need a prescription. Ok cool…. Sent a picture it what I wanted to the province 25 minutes away and my father in law had the meds in 30 minutes… lol I actually feel that’s convenient 😂

Back in the mid 90's, I was in Angeles City and got food poisoning. Worst experience of my life. Luckily, the Filipina I was seeing at the time took me to the hospital and got antibiotics. I didn't have a bad experience at the hospital, but sorry to hear about your friend and his wife who did. I don't blame them for not wanting to live there. Education is not different in the Philippines than in other countries.
The school teach reading, writing and math.
    That's their job.
You as parents are the one who have responsibility to educate behavior and discipline.
If you are failing to teach discipline then your children will encounter always problems.
Don't escape your responsibility, don't blame the school but blame yourself as parents.

The book of proverbs in the Bible will give you a load of wisdom on how to deal with just about all the circumstances in the Philippines, including money. You would be wise to read a couple chapters a day to get this wisdom. All you have to do is humbly ask God for it and he will give it to you just as Solomon did. He became the wisest man of all times.

What makes the philippines your home . Is it your children and family, or do you actually have feelings for the philippines itself. I'm trying to understand your actual point of view and what makes the philippines your choice to live. I know that this may be a personal question but you have brought up food for thought and as i am looking at the philippines as a place to hang my hat i want to be sure about my decision. I have been to the philippines 4 times in the past 3 years and know that it is a shit hole in places and extremely beautiful in others, and it usually is the Filipinos who are trashing it . I've personally watched the children throw their wrappers on the ground with the adults standing their watching, and nothing is said. They just don't get it, and either they are burning it, which is extremely toxic or illegally dumping it. Is it ignorance or stupidity, and how do you keep from coming unglued. Just some thoughts.

    I have worldwide medical insurance.
I don't pay nothing in hospitals affiliate to my insurance company.
I suppose my insurance will affiliate only hospitals who meet the requirements and standards.
And if for one or another reason that hospital can not do the necessary operation they bring me to another country where the operation can be done.
So after all those years paying for medical assistance i will not end up with paying big bills.
But everyone is old enough to know what to do.
Last things i want is that my Filipina wife her family or my family will have to pay for my bills.
Forget for a while to buy lot and build a house , look first for a good medical insurance , before you have to sell your house and lot to cover your medical bills.
