About the instruments they are playing:
    Yamaha KX5 Keytar
Chick Corea uses during this concert the Yamaha KX5, a master laptop keyboard from 1984. This is a 37-key keyboard covering a range from C2 to C5 with MIDI connectors permitting the remote stand-up performance of the keyboard instruments.
    Yamaha TRB JP TDR
John Patitucci plays the Yamaha TRB JP II, a 6-string electric bass. The TRB series was born during the'80s to cover a wider tonal range, both in the low and high frequencies. The four-layer laminate body is constructed from veneers of curly maple, ash, alder and maple. This design produces a precise and intense resonance throughout the instrument's register.
    Ibanez 540S-LPF
Frank Gambale plays the 540S-LPF Dessert Yellow. His first signature model, the FGM100 (the first of the Frank Gambale series) by Ibanez, introduced in 1991 is based on this 540S-LPF but has different pickups. The FMG100 was one of the 15 guitars that had been stolen from Frank Gambale house in 2004.
Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, serial #201695
Eric Marienthal always showed a predilection for the Alto Saxophone. The Mark VI was introduced by Selmer Paris in 1954. Many Jazz giants have used the Mark VI, including Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane.

How are using it, on board sounds or triggered? Yamaha certainly figured out some voodoo on getting a keyboard to be expressive, I am convinced Chick knew this and ran with it full blast.

@@evankeal I usually have my KX-5 hooked up to to any synth i use during recording sessions. For example a roland juno 106 or yamaha dx7. So yea i have it being triggered by other synths, from my use the KX-5 doesnt have any onboard sounds, it acts more like a controller with MIDI. The way chick corea used it in this vid is he had the KX-5 paired with the KX88 synth to share its sound patches.

@@EpicBlargman understood, I would love to know what exact sounds from his TX's/DX's he layers and plays with the KX88 (and subsequently sources the KX-5 with as well). I've been wanting to build a chick patch with (Rhodes/FM Electric/pad and even a little lead synth) he used very often on the first CC Elektric Band album. I know he had a ton of incarnations of his standard sound, I like them all. I could probably afford the equipment he used as rare and costly as it is these days, just not sure if I went that route would I get it all to work as I am very MIDI challenged. Have a decent patch going on a Roland DS, though nothing but a Yamaha is going to have that keyboard expression and touch that made it appealing to Chick. My Reface DX is the only Yamaha synth I currently own.

@@evankeal Same here, i wish you good luck with that MIDI can be tricky. I myself am a musician, ive been playing keys for a decade and a half, from pianos to synthesizers and i own alot of 1970s, 1980s, and 1990's analog and digital synthesizers, Chick Corea was one of my many inspirations (RIP)

Thank you! Do add a few words) Chick uses modded KX-5. He didnt like ribbon pitch bend, so he asked Yamaha team to install pitch bend wheel instead of volume wheel.

    • @adamgh0
      @adamgh0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I hate pitch ribbons too. I have DX-100 and prefer the wheel because it's more natural to how I do bends on a guitar. They may have flipped it backwards too. At 2:47 he bends up by pushing the wheel towards him, which is opposite the way my wheels work.

I like pitch ribbons. I just hate the ancient technology the pitch ribbon uses on the Kx-5 😭😭😭 If it were the same as modern pitch ribbons, I would love it.

How many sax solos can my ears handle?

    • @karljennings5910

I absolutely loathe saxophone solos. Sopranino sax is fine, for light, background colourings. But, big honking scratchy alto solos? I'd much prefer a moderated flugelhorn, or small trumpet. Why don't I own any David Sanborn, Bob Berg, Roland Kirk, Clarence Clemons records? Oh, yeah...now I remember.

Some sort of digital processor by the sounds of it, lots of compression and a tight gated reverb.

Also sounds like the bridge and middle pickup out of phase with each other, classic jangly Strat rhythn sound.
