Discovery made today. The shafts and pistons from the junk axial plastic shocks are the same as the traxxas gts( shaft diameter and piston diameter). The shaft is only slightly longer. I was able to replace my beat up old chrome gts shafts with a nice shiny nitride coated set of axial shafts with ZERO hastle. Time will tell if they leak or not. But my hopes are high that I've finally found a use for the bin full of leaky axial shocks!
Most every "name brand" shock can just have the shafts swapped around. Daphne has Element bodies with Associated pistons (from an RC10T3) and Traxxas GTS nitrided shafts.
@StubbsRC i had thought about filing off a little bit of the bottom of the plastic shock body, and a little off the end of the cap. Try to tighten up the seal cavity. See if a guy can fix them for free. If it works it would be a good free mod for someone just getting in.
Mr. Canyon, thank you for the content you create for us viewers. I love that your videos are raw and lengthy and you give us tons of input. Your podcast-ish videos are one of a kind sir.
I have 2 sets of those shocks now, springs are junk, but i replaced them with 0.7 x 13 x 45mm springs, and I've been fortunate that the pistons in both sets are a much tighter fit. Running 80wt in mine
Yeah, these pistons are the ol' hot dog down a hallway. Damping felt pretty close on 5000cst. I don't mind 'em because of the 10mm pistons and "normal" body OD. They can be made into a "regular" shock from my parts bin, but it's not a shock I'd recommend unless the parts bins are DEEP.
I'm glad they're not completely useless. I think at $22 a pair they are not worth it. The other fake Dravtechs are supposed to be there next week. Hopefully they are better.
I have been looking a these on Ali, waiting for you to check them out. As I don't have nearly the kid of parts bins you have, I'll drop getting them for now. I did however order a set of the other KYX shocks, the ones you reviewed a while back, that looked quite nice. Fairly cheap, and should be here sometime next week. They will likely go on a build with some Capra axles I'm building up with Axial housings and Ali internals. Be interesting to see how well that works out. :)
What about removing the provided coil spring altogether and using them on a leaf spring rig? Maybe there are some off the self wider pistons to replace the narrow provided ones.
I dont know why your pistons were so off??Mine I had to grind down a bit because they were too tight. I changed the silicone rings with Tamiya D-rings, threw away the springs and used some soft from a AMZ assortment and did run them on 550 CsT and they had been awesome. In the end you get what you pay for and those shocks are certainly better then 80% of the junk they sell usually there. They are advertised for TRX4 which usually weight 8-12 pounds so they are not so far off.
I wss so waiting for this video, thank you! Ive had several sets of these for years, really like them. Is it really out of the realm of possibilities to buy the suggest springs from element and traxxas pistons. Or does it not not make financial sense?
AT that point, you can just buy GTS or Big Bores. They're nice shocks, but at $22 a pair they need to work right out of the package. Buuuuuttt... if you have parts on hand-- like say you've bought Big Bores in the past-- you have most of what you need.
Do you have a rig that weighs between 17 and 20 pounds? If so, these could work. On the "soft" springs, anyway. Fill 'em with 5000cst and off you go. Otherwise, there are far better options for the exact same money.
@@CrawlerCanyon I had thought you found the perfect shock setup with the Traxxas 2660s and 2lb springs up front with 4 in in the back. You had talked about it previously
Oh, they are for sure. BUt I feel like they were reverse engineered by looking at photos. I've never before personally seen a notched 10mm piston. Or an 11.5mm ID shock spring.
To me, they're one of those "on the borderline" brands. They're putting out higher quality than the (usually nameless) Amazon/AE cloners, but whoever is working down in the KYX cloning dept. is working with stuff they have no background in. I mean... 11.5mm ID springs? What?
well...its not like you get BBs or elements and you can slap them on any kind of crawler..is it ? A little massaging is needed with everything, right? Just look at those Redcat ascend shocks....same thing.
They're still in service and they still work, but they're still not recommended as you could do the same work (or less) and spend less for similar results.
Save your money. The pricing model ProLine uses is inexcusable. For the price of a set of Big Bore Scalers, I can put together 5-7 full sets of shocks. And mine won't leak.
TH-cam is absolutlely chock full of channels churning out 9-minute long, glossy re-readings of the product description. You can absorb those to your eye's content, comfortable in the knowledge that you don't have any more insight than before you clicked on the video. Your time, your choice.
I was really excited about this video, until you demonstrated that they are just another junk shocks, with nice bodies. As you said, if you dont have extra shock parts there is no point on getting these, and for 10 more bucks I can get big bores, so... (its amazing that Aliexpress sells them for 21 a pair, maybe for 21 a set they could be something to think about)
I feel like Big Bores are the only shock where I've seen prices go down-- I've never paid more than $54 a set, but I've also paid as little as $45. It's like there's a tiny stock market inside of them.
Apparently, TH-cam didnt save my response about this, so here I am writing it again Maybe you cant get Big bores for 45, but you can for 50-55, and they are really good so the price is what it should be
@@CrawlerCanyon yeah, only downside is that I cant get them in Spain from Amazon or Amain (they dont ship some Traxxas stuff to some places), so the only way I can get big bores is from Spanish shops, and they cost 65€ (while I can get desert lizards for less than 50 on Amain, but if I want a nice looking "conventional" shock with the springs visible, there is no option at a decent price)
Shocking episode but damped my expectations of maybe a really good over the counter emulsion experience 🤣

Just put traxxas seals in them. 😁
I put them in my 10.3 bronco shocks. Had to play shimmy shimmy games but took 10 minutes to figure out

Not much better, no bladder, super stiff spring

I would then say that "quality control" are the words you're searching for. Good machine work, bad pretty much everything else.

20 a pair, big bores and not worry with the hassle. does not look like the threads will even allow a 10mm spring.
No, you're absolutely not getting a 10mm spring on these-- the "skinny" portion at the bottom is 11.4mm. Well made shock, not well thought out shock.
19:16 use emry cloth to "polish" the inside diameter to fit the 8mm ball end?
Have you seen the Fimonda “dravs”? These KYX look similar to dravs but the Fimonda shocks look like exact clones of dravs.
Ask me again in a couple of hours.
Another great video. Could you do one on Susie? How you made her? Great rc stand

Hello
How do they work right out of the box?🤔

I wonder if you got those ebay traxxas shock to losi mini conversion if they would be any good?
Is there a link to that, or are we walking about Mini-T springs on 2660s?
What is Susan and where can I get her???
I love my priceys custom shocks r the best of the best…🤷♂️ unverified leaks!
does anyone know if the fake dravs (fimonda) work with a Mini-T spring? Are they any good or dont bother?
Did you ditch the traxxas 2660s with custom springs?
Did I what now? There are... eight or ten sets of Big Bores in service here?

It was in your other video, you said you were running the 2660s. Ill try to find it.

Ali actually has real clone dravtechs right now
A set was ordered the same day these were. No sign of them.
I ordered a set about 10 days ago, first thing I thought was " I hope crawler canyon does junk/ review on these"😂
I am looking forward to be tested here.👍
These seem a little different than the "big bore" shocks currently all over aliexpress that look identical to dravtechs/Traxxas.
Oh, they are for sure. BUt I feel like they were reverse engineered by looking at photos. I've never before personally seen a notched 10mm piston. Or an 11.5mm ID shock spring.
