This video shares my thoughts on high end expensive bikes and if they are worth purchasing. High end bikes to include Trek’s Emonda, Madone, Domane. Specialized S-Works Tarmac, Venge Aethos. Pinarello Dogma F12. Giant Defy. And Canyon Bikes.

Great videos. I bought the Domane SL7 with AXS shifting. The bike is way more advanced than my riding ability but I have a nerve disease (CMT) in my hands and the electronic shifting is a game changer for me. It makes riding much more enjoyable. I love your positivity in your videos. Thank you.

Really great breakdown of the range of buyers. So true. Thanks for bringing it to light. It really comes down to an individual's criteria as to what level of bike is best for them.

A bike's relative worth is determined by the rider.
I rock a mid-90's Trek mountain bike with V-brakes that probably ain't worth a hundred bucks that I got for free and it still puts a huge smile on my face. Can't find a rigid aluminum hardtail that can touch it's old school steel ride.
But then there's my CAAD to that's like a crotch rocket and that I just can't ride slow. If it had a motor on it, it'd be a ticket magnet.
There's also my blinged-out Cannondale SuperSix EVO coming in at 15lbs wet sittin' on 50's with a Dura-Ace 9100 group & full carbon cockpit.
And finally there's my spankin' brand new custom stainless steel framed rig that's (as-built) lighter than a new Emonda. That's probably going to be my favorite of all of them. She's stiff, tight, tracks beautifully, is wicked smooth, but still tossable light and feels like a carbon bike made of metal.
They're like kids. My free bike puts a smile on my face like my bling bikes like my entry level bike. We dictate the value of what we ride. A reliable bike you pick up at Walmart that you don't push and ride it for what it's for is better than a $15,000 plastic fantastic ride that keeps breaking parts because it was engineered to be ultralight over ultraRIGHT.
If I was going to suggest a bike to anyone today, I'd tell them to get a $1000 bike to start out with, ride it into the ground, find out if they're into the sport and if they are, upgrade to a $2000 bike which for me is the sweet spot where you can get something with 105, a good set of trainer wheels and a decent cockpit. Anything over $3000 and you're looking at a bike you probably won't have to upgrade for years.
Over $5000? That's when the diminishing returns kicks in, but more power to the guy who can walk into a bike store and order up a $15,000 bike. They ain't playin'.
Since I build up my bikes, they're spec'd better than a manufacture's $7,000+ rig, but I have them done at around $3500 with better components and an already personalized cockpit.
Good vid bruh. I'm with you 100% on this. If you ever ride in NYC, let me know.

Thanks, John, for producing these videos. I have recently renewed my interest in cycling. I have a 15-year old Trek 7.2 FX hybrid I bought in 2006, mainly because gas prices were reaching $5.00/gallon at the time, so I decided to buy a bike to commute to work in 3 days a week to cut down on fuel expenses. I paid about $450 for the bike back then, which was, at the time, really stretching the limit of my budget. But, the bike paid for itself after about 4 months of use. My commute to work then was about 16 miles each way, so doing that 3 days per week was great exercise. It wasn't long, however, that I found myself going out on the occasional weekend ride down the W&OD Trail. I did this for about 2 years, then my job sent me overseas for 8 years, and since most of these overseas locations weren't really conducive to biking, my bike remained mostly unused. The pandemic got me interested in biking again, so I got my trusty old hybrid serviced at a local bike shop, and have started taking it out for rides again. The bike is reliable and gets me where I need to go, but now I have a interest in doing more. I would like to be able to go on longer rides than I can on my hybrid, and also am interested in getting involved with group rides with cycling clubs in my area. My hybrid would not be able to keep up with the road bikes I see in group rides that pass by where I live. My timing for this renewed interest, is, of course, bad, because good endurance road bikes are nearly impossible to find these days, unless your are willing to fork out really big bucks. All of the bike shops I have checked out online only have the very expensive, higher end bikes in stock, which are outside my budget, and I probably wouldn't buy them even if they were, because I don't want to spend that amount of money on a bike. $1300 - $2300 is the range I am willing to spend. Also, your videos on the Trek Domane have made me really want to get one, though I would probably opt for the SL4, AL4 or AL5. The problem is, they are nowhere to be found, and from what I understand the wait time for Trek bike orders is about a year. A local bike shop in my area does have a Cannondale Synapse 150 in stock for $1900, and appears to be a similar class of bike as the Domane bikes I am interested in, and the price is within my budget. The reviews for this Cannondale are mainly positive, and I am sure if I got it, I would probably like it. But, I have my heart set on getting a Domane. My question is, in my place, what would you do? Get a bike that has the specs you are looking for and is within your budget, but not the exact model you want? Or, order the one you want and be willing to wait for however long it takes for the bike to be back in stock, even if that wait ends up being a year (or maybe a bit longer)? I guess that's 3 questions. haha.

What’s going on Earle! Thank you for the support and taking time out to watch the videos. Great question. I would probably go for the cannondale. There’s a lot of information to be gained in a year. I would probably look to sell the hybrid and if I didn’t love the cannondale, next year I would look to sell to be able to upgrade. Pushing back getting into group rides and longer distance. That’s a lot of physical growth and knowledge to be gained from a year of riding. Hope this helps.

@@johnmanuel7561 Thanks, that helps a lot. Keep making your great videos. I like that you emphasize the user experience in riding, rather than just read off a bunch of specs. Specs are important, but having a great riding experience is more important, in my opinion.

Just to let you know, I ordered my bike. After extensive online research, I opted for the 2021 Giant Contend AR3. I wanted the AR1, but it was only available for store pickup and the closest store to me that had it in stock would have involved a 10 hour drive each way. Since the AR1 costs $1800, at that price point it would have been better to just get the Cannondale Synapse 105 at a local store here for only $100 more. The AR3 is about $500 cheaper, ($1300), and the lower cost was helpful in making my decision. The reason I went with the Giant bike vice the Cannondale was that I have the option to add up to 38cm tires, and one TH-cam bike expert said he was able to put 41 cm tires on his AR. This will give me the option of doing some gravel riding if I choose to. So, price and versatility were the main deciding factors in my decision. Anyway, thanks again for your informative videos. They certainly helped me make my purchase decision.

I 100% agree with all of your comments, this could also be applied to cars, motorcycles etc... or any hobby. I recently purchased a Trek Domane SL6 at a slight discount at $3,500 & I love it. I could’ve gone even higher end but I didn’t see the point as it’s awesome right out of the box & to me it’s perfect. At some point I’ll probably get some nice Bontrager Carbon wheels & have one set for road, one for gravel, I actually like the stock Paradigm wheels, they ride nice. Hope you & your buddies stay safe! New sub from Philly!

Great video! Being a bike guy I can identify with the idea of owning the best bike you can afford. I just signed on the dotted line for a Pinarello Dogma F12. It will replace my Bianchi. The new bike will have Di2 and carbon wheels. These are the two major differences between the two bikes. My reason, in addition to having the new bike bug bite me, is the comfort of Di2 and the lighter weight of better wheels. With the price of bikes high, I can recoup a big portion when I sell the Bianchi. I also have a 35 year old Peugeot. Could I still enjoy biking if that were my only bike? Yes, but it would greatly reduce the outcome I work so hard to achieve. It would be like having a '62 Chevy as your daily driver. You could still go where you want, but the comfort and reliability would greatly dimmish. As always, I enjoy your videos and you speak to the rest of us two wheel fanatics.

Wise words, John, and a video addressing this question couldn't have come at a better time after waving good bye to my first road bike less than two hours ago. Yes it weighed 11.1kg, the frame was two sizes too small and the groupset was barely Claris in places, but it was enough to get me hooked. Now to ponder how much to spend on my bike. Realistically a Trek Domane AL3 or AL4 with the correct size frame would be a noticeable step up :)

Thank you for the advice! Currently i’m thinking to get an entry level road bike. That was how I found your youtube since you once had a Trek Domane (which is the one i’m looking for). Currently I use Marin Muirwoods 2020, mostly for exercise/ workout during this pandemic days. Or for commuting in the better days. Some friends gave advice to get higher end bikes (which is also more expensive). Although I know those bikes have much sophisticated quality than, say, Trek Domane…the reason i’ll stick to Domane is simply the same with your advice. At this moment i only need an entry level. Perhaps one day, when I realized that I need higher quality bikes. But not today.

Thanks to you and Chris for sharing. In my opinion, something mid tier would be best for most riders. Many do not compete or will not bring out the full potential of a higher end bike. Not to mention the increasing risk of getting robbed or jacked. Seen on the news, robbers are even doing armed bike robberies! They go as far as following someone home after scoping them out or seeing the owners bike on their car, waiting a few days and breaking into someone’s garage to steal the bikes. A mid tier bike would hurt a little less but your sense of security still takes a big hit. I got cameras and an extended glock 29 for any dumasses trying to rob me of my security. Keep up the great videos and thanks Chris for sharing your bike specs.

Great video. I have always wondered why this is an issue. People don't seem to question why someone might get a Mercedes or Lexus over a Kea or Volkswagen. I'll say it like this. You get what you like and what you can afford. Like you said in this video. There are some people who can buy expensive bikes, but aren't that much in the sport. Like e.g someone from my club has a Specialized Tarmac, 3T and Colnago C64. But he can afford it and he do ride well. Me myself owns a Bianchi 928L with DA 7800 components (2007). I invested ones. Still kicking it. What I did now is ordering modern components Ultegra to grade it up. I will grade my wheels as well from Ksyrium ES 100 anniversary wheels to some DA C50. All these mentioned upgrades are used parts. I'm not a professional who has sponsors. .lol. so I will do it this way and kick some @$$ with this old work horse.
Great bike. I'm happy I invested a few years back in this brand.
Maybe I will go looking for a modern maybe XR4. But again. It's not at the top of my proprietary list.
Great video though. And one last thing.

My choices were the canyon endurace and the domane. I went with the domane for a few reasons. The most important one was because i was brand new to the sport and i knew nothing about my measurements or the geometry that would fit me best. And canyon being a direct consumer company, its not really catered to a person who doesn't know exactly what they want/need. Granted, i couldve gone the extra mile and found a person with one or went to the bike shop to get outfitted, but i also wanted to support the lbs. Just some other things to consider when it comes to buying a bike.

To this day I have a Cannondale Quick CX2 that I started with. Very good bike. I ride with him so far. Bike is 9 years old. A year ago I bought an Canyon Lux CF SLX 9. This year I ordered a Trek Domane SLR 9 which will come to me at the end of July.
What do I want to say?
I think it's normal if you have passion for something to increase your demands. It's not about showing off in front of someone. I never thought about it. It's just a development. I am increasing the demands for a comfortable ride. I can't talk about performance at my age (44 years). It's not impossible, but I enjoy the ride, each detail.
In any case, I think that if a person is not limited by money and wants to buy anything for any reason, it is his business.
Is it worth it? From my point of view, yes.
However, you must take these potential pitfalls into consideration before you buy expensive bike:
expensive components, huge attention, tremendous loss of value, bait for thieves and so on.
On the other hand, you gets a great bike.
As my wife says: I hope this is the last bike :)

Nice thoughts. I love the hot new bikes that show up on the market every year, but I’m a cheapskate so I normally buy used and hunt for deals. Bikes are stupid expensive for what they are and they lose value quicker even than cars. And Wow, those roads are crazy in Baltimore. Tram rails and very rough. If you ride those regularly, I can see going for 32s or bigger.

I can say from where i come here, cycling is becoming a new golf where everyone are just outright buying top-end bike / best of the best of the best equipment where some of rider were buying newest stuff just outshine the rest of the group (this is the reason why i ride solo here and not joining a group). Current stock situation does not really high making bikes way expensive than 1 or 2 years ago.
Sad thing is most LBS are cashing in on this trend and started to focus on those high tier stuff and neglect the lower end stuff or lower end customer. Eg the LBS owner i got my alloy bike from (they are focusing on high margin high end or custom bike) did not really (more like being ignored) greet/small talk to me when i walk in (his other shop staff were okay though) *but* when some high roller/returnee customer who got high end stuff from him walk in he immediately jump onto them. Sad but its how things was rolling here.
For me, currently riding mid spec alloy bike (allez elite) with 105 and alloy seat post/bar/stem is more than enough for me. I am saving up for carbon wheel which is the only upgrade i do then I can focus on piling up the miles. Once i get my fitness up on par then i only consider upgrade to carbon or go titanium for longevity purpose.
For me no point riding superbike when my fitness is dogshit to begin with, there no way you hide subpar fitness behind a superbike (even you do, sooner or later it will be exposed lol)
Also, its important to do Pre-bike fit before buying the bike to see if that particular bike fit you out of the box and post purchase bike fit for finer fine tuning. Not cheap to do so but I think its worth it.
Funny to think if I or anyone willing to spend so much on bike why not throw in a proper bike fit as a long term investment too.
Subscribed to your channel and keep up the good work
*P.S you guys have the balls to ride in between vehicles (especially the big bus) I have no balls to do it as I find it is unnecessary risk hence i try to make a point to start my ride earlier so lesser traffic to deal with it*

as far as the comments that you made I would have to say it's well worth it if it's well within your means. I bought a prince pinarello with aluminum handlebars and Aluminum stock wheels the bike was stock, so I bought some all carbon handlebar stem combo the Talon and some Easton Carbon wheels. so having said that it's worth it if it's going to motivate you to get out and ride, I've been in my room for over 2 years with this Corona shit so for me to order a bike and to fix it up the way I want to and look at that and it's going to motivate me to get back in shape get my legs and lungs back it's well worth the purchase, it's not going to break me financially but it motivates me emotionally to have a beautiful bike looking at me asking me why are you not riding me ? so I get it, I get on my bike and I ride so a high-end bike is worth it because I made a average bike a competitive bike and the only competition it's me against myself. I have the bike for 3 months and I spent the base amount on a prince, I spent as much on the gear meaning that I already have everything I need to suit up and ride and I didn't upgrade until I got 50 miles under my belt. I'm having my handlebars installed tomorrow my wheels are about a week away so I'm going to do my laundry tomorrow. so yes it's worth it if your motivation is to get back out there not chasing anybody I'm not racing anybody I need about six more months before I'm able-body to hang with a group. I'm BMX roots , mountain bike roots, I haven't been on a road bike and almost 20 years so I came back hard with a good one I love my pinarello I'm going all carbon the only thing aluminum is going to be my group, I'm all ultegra but I do not regret my purchase because it feels so good when you come home sore. I'll let you know when I get another century on my resume

@@Acestrong pace of the ride is important out on the open road, or when climbing a mountain, or descending. Not in the town. That's just a leisure slow ride to get to where you can actually RIDE, and that's where there are no lights anyway.

I've done back and forth with John before on him and his crew blowing through red lights like the rules of the road don't apply to them which, in fact, is dead wrong.
How about if motorists start doing the same if they think "it's safe to proceed?" Chaos and destruction.
This is another really bad, dangerous and recklessly arrogant example for younger cyclists that gives all cyclists a bad rep.
How are we, with a straight face and in good conscience, going to promote more people commuting by bike while at the same time showing them that the rules of the road don't apply to them?

    1. The main thing you get for more money is lightness. A lighter bike is faster when you accelerate, and when climbing. Also, it FEELS faster. Anticipation of that exhilarating speediness is key for getting me on the bike, and for enjoying the ride.
    2. It's hard to quantify the pleasures of biking, and harder still to put a price tag on it. How much is dropping 3 pounds of bike weight worth to me?
