Cops, Capitalism, and the War on Black Life

  • In this program, Robin D. G. Kelley, Distinguished Professor and Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History at UCLA, examines how police in the neoliberal era-in tandem with other state and corporate entities-have become engines of capital accumulation, government revenue, gentrification, the municipal bond market, the tech and private security industry-in a phrase, the profits of death. Kelley argues the police don’t just take lives; they make life and living less viable for the communities they occupy. The growth of police power has also fundamentally weakened democracy and strengthened “thanatocracy”-rule by death- especially with respect to Black communities.
Kelley says these same communities have produced a new abolition democracy, organizing to advance a different future, without oppression and exploitation, war, poverty, prisons, police, borders, the constraints of imposed gender, sexual, and ableist norms, and an economic system that destroys the planet while generating obscene inequality. I was shocked when I found out that police brutality is sponsored by our government. Police departments receive government grants for arrest and ticket quotas. 🤔 I always wondered why our presidents never said or done anything to stop police brutality, it's because they are responsible for police brutality.

Great analysis here. I've always been intrigued by the violent origins of capitalism in Europe (amongst europeans) and how it's evils were propagated and 'perfected' in the Americas.

After studying & understanding the origins of Capitalism over in Europe. One sadly then understands that one of the primary reasons that African Americans got no 40 acres and a mule. At the end of the Civil War simply was bc the economic system known as American capitalism. Actually really did require a sorta permanent underclass to extract cheap labor from. Just like they did over in Europe byway of turning the farmers living off the land or their land into landless wage workers or minimal wage employee's

Seriously! You are comparing this man to victims of Jim Crow Laws; and victim's of slavery. A man who was intoxicated and fell asleep at a drive thru; a man who disregarded the law and legal directives: where is the logic in this speakers argument. Oh, I get it, this guy is compensated if he can help his buddie sale a book. Hey, let's talk about how a lot of middle and upper middle class Blacks abandoned and castigated many of the lower class Blacks; having an elitists attitude toward these Blacks. I myself was shunned by these elitists Blacks; Not until I graduated from college and matriculated in the finance world was I accepted; a fake acceptance in most cases.
