I'm nowhere close to being at any level they're at but I know that one of the most important aspects of being a comic book artist is learning, and constantly trying to improve your craft. It goes for every medium in life really, which is why I have such an issue with Rob Liefeld. I believe that because he got hired at 19 to do comics professionally, he, for lack of better terms, got a big head and became extremely narcissistic to the point where he felt like he didn't have to improve anymore. Jim Lee's earlier work had flaws because he was also a young artist but even to this day he's still finding ways to keep at it and try new techniques to improve his craft. Now he's regarded as a legend and has earned his place in the comic landscape. However, Liefeld not only stopped improving but it seemed to halt completely when he got extremely lucky with Deadpool. I will say that yes, his artwork has technically "improved" now compared to then (he at least figured out how ribcages work) but not by much and it's extremely unfortunate. What makes it worse is that I know many artists my age and older would give a limb and an organ to have started a professional career in comics at 19 and even make a fortune with our own characters as he did but it feels like he stopped giving a shit. I guess the summation of my dislike can be described as a waste of potential. If he had not gotten so arrogant and cocky because of his success, he would probably be up there with Jim Lee and so many amazing artists today. Congratulations on 100 episodes, Chris. Always look forward to your vids. As for Liefeld, I'm still not a fan of his work, but I give him a lot of credit for creating a name for himself and staying relevant for 25+ years in an industry that can be very harsh and critical. He marches to his own drummer which I can definitely respect. Here's to the next 100, Chris, and thanks for all you do!
I've just recently gotten heavily into comic collecting after about a 20 year break. The over-saturation of the market in the 90's kinda turned me off to buying new comics. Still read my old ones, but stopped buying new ones. Now that I'm back in full tilt, I'm learning a lot about what's been happening over the years from great channels like yours. I wasn't aware of the controversy over Liefeld that's been going on. Seems like folks either really love the guy or they hate 'em. Not much in-between that I can find. Fascinating to learn this stuff here. Thanks again for a great, fun informative channel.
Jeff I left comics from 1991 to 2015 and have had a similar experience. The Lees and the Liefelds (and the speculators) really turned me off, but if only I had been a fan of, say, the Legion of Super Heroes, I would have stayed in comics.
Recommendations are always welcome. I'm rather enjoying buying omnibus collections of great runs at the moment. Reading Infinite Crisis at the moment and I friggin' love it! Geoff John's Teen Titans looks awfully good so I may pick that up.
The 90s is the dark age of comic books. Everything great has been tossed away in favor for Edgy Kid's fantasy, like: Guns, DUAL WIELDING GUNS, dark colors, power suits, shitty shading, ugly colors, EVERYONE BECOMING BUFF, I MEAN, MAGNETO IN THE 60's HAD A NORMAL SHIRT, AND IN THE 90's HE'S BECOME A BUFFASS BIMBO.
I mean, I feel a bit sorry for Liefeld. He clearly draws straight up from his heart. He doesnt correct stuff or bother with time consuming feet. He just want to express all the emotions of giant chests (male and female) and move on. All jokes aside, I am frustrated and angry about his artwork though. It's just so so bad.
@@kaivenfigueroa Excuses excuses. You could argue this with an artist who has a particular style, whose art is very stylized. You can't claim that about Liefeld, because his art is so inconsistent. Even from panel to fucking panel. His art is not a stylistic choice - he's just not very good at drawing, compared to most professional artists.
Holy shit, dude! I have never seen anyone do something so masochistic. First you subject yourself to the horror of Liefeld's art and when he fucks up you punish yourself even more by drinking bottles of butter and piss flavoured soda...? I've never seen such courage. Have a sub, man. You've earned it.
Congratulations on the 100 Episodes! I followed you over here from TheRobotsPajamas from episode 1, and can't believe you've been able to keep these up at a weekly pace this whole time. I did see some triangle feet (especially Deadpool in the business suit), and although it's not a trope you specifically mentioned, his characters are often hovering above the ground and aren't anchored to their surroundings. I guess even though he's drawing more feet he doesn't like to draw them flexing when people walk.
The "woman standing with a uni-leg" trope hits a couple of times I saw. And while you mention that Liefield cuts off feet on the cover, when you finish the foot section and go "back to the story" right there Deadpool's feet are cut off. lol
Every time you pulled out a soda and I saw the 'Get y'alls fixins'' motto on it I was just like "Ohhhh no!", every time I've seen someone drink a Lester's Fixin's soda it is a rancid nightmare.
Ironically I think his early DC stuff is his best work. He proved he could actually draw before he developed his horrible style affectations that distorted anatomy and common sense. His "Secret Origins" story of Nightshade was a very solid beginning, and his "Hawk and Dove" was good as well. It's when his "New Mutants" work began blowing up that he went off the deep end. Success simply went to his head.
If you're referring to his work on Hawk and Dove, credit goes to his inker Karl Kesel, who has done great work drawing and inking himself for the Newsboy Legion.
I know this video is nearly 2 years old, but I find this interesting. Many of those artists from that time period have stopped growing. I blame the deadlines and workload from allowing them to get better. One artist that most of us like that makes one of these big "tropes" is Jim Lee. How often does he avoid drawing feet? My eye is drawn (no pun) to Jim's lack of feet, especially on covers.
It's like Rob Liefeld has never actually personally witnessed a real-life human being in the wild -- his only visual reference for them is comic book art.
nah! you should get his old books. they were so bad they were good. don't remember why I collected his books, but I think that the fact that he got mixed in with the likes of Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane at the time, he was in the right place at the right time.
Yeah, he's definitely far better than his infamous 90's work. Nowadays, you can look at Rob Liefeld's recent artwork and unironically say "Wow, that is great". I didn't know about the more recent Deadpool example, but another one would be his Micronauts cover. I had completely no idea it was Liefeld, until I saw his signature. It also helps that he's become much more self-aware and less defensive, even creating a self-parody character made entirely of pouches who uses a pouch gun with pouch bullets (I think it's called "The Pouch"). That's the kind of humor I think Liefeld always needed to have back in his heyday, but he was sorely lacking because "I just sold over a million copies, clearly I know better than you!" Leaning more on colorists I think plays to his strengths too. The problem with that is, he gets all of the limelight when it's the colorist (people who are already notoriously underappreciated as is) pulling his weight and making him look good. Even here, his colorist (Romulo Fajardo Jr.) doesn't get a name-drop, despite having been the one who actually made that art pop.
Zack West his art has gotten slightly better, but it isn't something that I would call good. He is a name, like smashing pumpkins, that sells-that is all.
I don't know happened but I had to subscribe to you again, and I never unsubscribed because you're more authentic than most youtube comic related channels, you're more sincere and honest and you're not afraid to say that you like controversial comic creators. Anyway I subscribed again, here's to another 100 more videos.
Great video! I confess I never bought a Liefield comic. I even took photos of him at a comic show tears ago while he was drawing. (Left handed). And in all that time I never paid any attention to his work. It was so off my radar. I never thought to wondering why I didn’t care for it and you summed it all up for me.
Bethan Woods At this point he is a huge name in comics and has a large enough fan base that he can still get work. Plus, given this video he does seem to have improved some elements in his style. I think Liefeld got very lucky. He got into comics at a time when his work, as bad as it was, somehow resonated with audiences, and fit well into the overall direction comics were heading into. A bit earlier or later, and he would never have made it.
At 14:10 You talk about eyes. The Spider-Man artists found a workaround that the eventual Dead Pool artists adopted. That and the color scheme leads me to believe that's why they'll always accuse one-another of stealing each others outfit whenever they meet.
Thank you for your hard work and self inflicted abuse man; im just getting into drawing comics and your channel is mad informative and inspiring. Liefelds stuff can get pretty butt ugly but theres a purity in it that i appreciate, like a kid playing with his action figures and forgetting where he's put the accessories
poor Rob drew the bicep of a much larger arm, and then realized he didn't have enough space for the rest so he crammed the forearm in to the space he had. I also like how Deady has to prop his hand against his kidney because there's a stupid pouch in the way for some reason! lol... His artwork is eye-wateringly terrible. Afaic, his work has no redeeming qualities.
Why does liefeld have so much difficulty drawing feet? Feet aren't very difficult to draw, especially when covered by a shoe, they're a fairly simple form to draw.
Honestly, I have terrible time with feet too and I literally went to private University for portrait painting and comic book character design. Sometimes it's just a weird hiccup artists get. I knew a girl who couldn't draw ears for some particular reason. 🤷
Maybe it's the perspective cues that are inherent in feet? If you get the perspective off in drawing the feet (though simply formed) the whole figure looks perspectively off
I think he just doesn't find them fun or interesting to draw, his pre-breakout work shows he can draw human anatomy fine. For his own reasons he just chooses not to.
I found you by accident, and I'm glad I did! Your series is fun and I find myself agreeing with you especially on Greg Land. I have so many things I follow, I wish I had more time, but I am enjoying your work so far.
You're being very charitable to one of the worst artists in the history of the medium. Yes, your example shows that he reduced those tropes, but look at the rest of his art that you showed - it was still quite poor. I think the best way to put it is that his work lacks effort. You pointed out the colorist doing his job for him. But even the foreground elements, those characters aren't well drawn, aren't drawn with any particular skill. He's still suing all sorts of tricks to avoid work...such as everyone either being in masks or being an alien. He still draws sci fi gun-tubes so that he doesn't have to draw detail or perspective. The inability to put the woman IN the waterfall as opposed to a waterfall being behind her. The guy's issues sell because he does lowest common denominator stuff. He has explosions and blood and action, and he has that reliably. Not that he does those well, but every comic fan who just wants action knows that his books will be stacked with action...and very little else. He's the least talented creator to last so long or rise so high. Even Michael Bay, the Rob Liefeld of filmmaking, at least makes movies that are pretty. Liefeld's art isn't even that.
Congrats on your 100th episode! Really happy to see you do another Liefeld review, the first video of yours I found was the last Liefeld one so it all comes full circle. I also really like Liefeld's work tho it's not perfect it has a lot of energy and I love 90s style art. I can't believe its been two years already!

Not gonna lie, never was able to stand his art until you showed the recent deadpool issue, I'm actually quite impressed and he seems to have improved a lot!
He's the one the luckiest hacks out there, he's the idol of shitty to mediocre artists. Many Artists 100 times better than him can only dream of a 1/10th of the fame and money he's got.
Congrats on your channel reaching your 100th episode bro and great review bro, I personally believe that if Liefeld didn't get lazy by riding Deadpool's popularity for years and if he had continued drawing ,he would of been among the legends of comicbook artists .But keep up the good work bro.
He IS a legend... His Deathmite "work" literally ruined Valiant comics. So, when people praise Liefeld, they're literally ignoring Barry Windsor-Smith.
yeah i don't think rob liefield artwork has improved that much since the 90's and in fact his artwork looks really bad. Also congrats 100 episode man :)
Excellsion I give Liefeld credit; he's clearly grown over the decades. He still has his stylistic elements and ruts he falls into, but there's clearly a huge improvement.
Since you mentioned Mike Mignola, I remember in his redditAMA Mike said that he, like Liefeld, did not like to draw feet but was better at hiding them than Liefeld
It's always been painfully obvious that Liefeld has no idea what he's doing. But one great thing about the comic book industry(depending on how you look at it)is that there aren't really stringent requirements to work in it(and even more so,nowadays, with all of the different avenues available to aspiring writers and creators). There are a lot of writers and artists who quite frankly, aren't that talented, aren't that creative and who aren't that skilled but they still managed to make it,anyways.I think Liefeld is just the most famous example of that.
I still consider him an artist, just a really bad one. His art got him a paycheck and that’s all he knew. I dont think he acknowledged how bad that art style was
I still consider him an artist… a professional and talented one at that… _B U T,_ a bad one at that… I know I’ll probably never reach to that levels of shading, line shading and coloring but damn… is bad Talent or skill doesn’t mean it ain’t good looking
I think it's great to see that he's improved and that he's still on books from the big companies sometimes. Kinda nostalgic and makes me happy for him. I do feel a little bit like if he was still operating as he did in the 90s it would be harder to get away with it now. Not only was that stuff more in vogue then (tho he did help popularize it) but the 90s was also a more lawless period for comics. All sorts of wild shit going on, and more books running at any given time and less scrutiny on those books (most artists wouldn't dare attempt a bathing scene nowadays), etc. Rob Leifeld and some other Marvels post-bender in some high rise office building trying to hit deadlines on multiple books in the early 90s is the dream, man

I apologize if I offend anyone who supports Liefeld and I want to say really quickly that while I am new to your content, I am thoroughly enjoying watching your videos on these topics. You've got another subscriber and I can't wait to watch more :)
Word
This is a very fair and balanced report
Thanks for your work, I really love it
Congratulations on 100 episodes, Chris.
The Lees and the Liefelds (and the speculators) really turned me off, but if only I had been a fan of, say, the Legion of Super Heroes, I would have stayed in comics.
you guys need a list of the good stuff?
Let's not forget MacFarlane
@5:32 "OOOH that's foul" - come for the thoughtful criticism, stay for the Butter Soda LOL
It's just so so bad.
the point of his art is to be impactful, not to be anatomically correct
Yeah. Even if he's gotten better over time, his art is still not up to professional standard.
@@puckerings example of a stylistic artist that's very good: mike mignola
@@kaivenfigueroa It's impactful all right. Not in the way he intends though.
Thanks for featuring my fanart, Chris! Happy you liked it! :)
Congrats on hitting 100 episodes!
Loved it. Thank you, Ravi.
Man, this channel is so awesome! You deserve so many more subs. Keep up the good work!!!
Great episode... I laughed as hard at your soda reactions as I did at the tropes.
When you come back to Canada , we have both cream sodas, the pink and the almost transparent one , same taste enjoy
Moores work on fear Agent is incredible, some of my favourite in the short time I've been reading comics
As a greedy teen I sipped from time to time some french dressing.
But this soda shouldn't exist. It just shouldn't.
The "woman standing with a uni-leg" trope hits a couple of times I saw. And while you mention that Liefield cuts off feet on the cover, when you finish the foot section and go "back to the story" right there Deadpool's feet are cut off. lol
Dirt soda taste like....dirt go figure. Everyone needs to subscribe all his videos are good, when Chris gets drunk from troupes is really funny.
"The poses are solid..." Apart from the fact that his legs look like they're on backwards!
Love the videos, though!
Congrats on 100 Episodes! Love your
Channel!
Every time you pulled out a soda and I saw the 'Get y'alls fixins'' motto on it I was just like "Ohhhh no!", every time I've seen someone drink a Lester's Fixin's soda it is a rancid nightmare.
"That just tastes foul... let me make sure"
That's a trope...
"Does this smell like shit to you?"
Loved to see the great Tony Moore in this episode, and congrats for 100!
Great! That was an excellent 100th episode!
Entertaining, informative and funny breakdown as always! This video and the pepper one make for a great double feature, too
It's like Rob Liefeld has never actually personally witnessed a real-life human being in the wild -- his only visual reference for them is comic book art.
Okay...I'd have "liked" this video anyway, but after the opening intro...I liked it faster than I usually do XD Great opening!
''It's nice to have someone who can draw feet'' Jim Lee :D LOL
Congratulations on 100. Glad to be here for it. Great topic. The comic book 'artist' I love to hate!
One year later I'm still laughing my ass off about this video.
I actually don’t have any of Rob’s work but that’s kind of a good thing
nah! you should get his old books. they were so bad they were good. don't remember why I collected his books, but I think that the fact that he got mixed in with the likes of Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane at the time, he was in the right place at the right time.
Liefeld didn't create the pouch. It was a long time fan parody. He did draw a version though.
Adelso Corona is the Inker ... So that has a lot to do with look getting better.
Zack West his art has gotten slightly better, but it isn't something that I would call good. He is a name, like smashing pumpkins, that sells-that is all.
@@willdpe1256 Honestly though, cuz Liefeld's anatomy and faces are still all over the damn place
I don't know happened but I had to subscribe to you again, and I never unsubscribed because you're more authentic than most youtube comic related channels, you're more sincere and honest and you're not afraid to say that you like controversial comic creators. Anyway I subscribed again, here's to another 100 more videos.
y'know even Stan Lee said that a Rob Liefeld character without shoulder pads is almost naked XD
OMFG TONY MOORE?!?? Holy shit I love that man
I cannot believe you got him in your series
Short answer to the titular question: no.
Long answer: noooooooo.
It's been 5 years. Has Liefeld improved by now? Maybe it's time for another episode about him.
Why do those sodas exist lmao
Great video! I confess I never bought a Liefield comic. I even took photos of him at a comic show tears ago while he was drawing. (Left handed). And in all that time I never paid any attention to his work. It was so off my radar. I never thought to wondering why I didn’t care for it and you summed it all up for me.
I gotta be honest, I enjoy Rob Liefeld roasts because I honestly hate his art. I see his art and wanna punch somebody.😐
ᕼᑌᗰᗩᑎ ᖴᗴᒪᒪᗩ
Same! Liefeld's "stuff" is just pure BAD.
HOW DOES HE STILL GET WORK?!
A Snake Yeah, that cover is awful. Let's do a Voldemort on it and not mention it.
Rob Liefeld's goal in his art is to make people want to punch each other.
I feel the same way about JR Jr.
Though, I came late to the party (channel), finds it fun, funny and informative. So Congrates to the 100 episodes and 10 million more!!!
18:43 *What* is going on with Deadpool's arm on the left? I don't know how to describe it other than saying that it looks so wrong.
poor Rob drew the bicep of a much larger arm, and then realized he didn't have enough space for the rest so he crammed the forearm in to the space he had. I also like how Deady has to prop his hand against his kidney because there's a stupid pouch in the way for some reason! lol...
His artwork is eye-wateringly terrible. Afaic, his work has no redeeming qualities.
I feel like the groin blob actually makes sense, even a superhero would wear a codpiece, and codpieces under lycra would look similar to that
Come for the critique, stay for the reactions. You're cringing at every sip, even when you like the soda.
Adam Lobbins 1a
22:34 the Princess sleeps with Deadpool, the man with wings for biceps. Those arms are ridiculous.
Dirty Harry had a Cable gun!! That movie must have inspired everything Liefeld ever did.
There's every chance it was an actual influence.
@HicksZ34 On the other hand Clint Eastwood also made Hirohiko Araki gave birth to Kujo Jotaro.
Okay, I think that intro is my new favorite from you. It's just great.
I too like to laugh at Liefeld's art but then I always remember that he is the successful comic artist and not me :D
So glad to discover this show
Why does liefeld have so much difficulty drawing feet? Feet aren't very difficult to draw, especially when covered by a shoe, they're a fairly simple form to draw.
Its the same reason why he can't draw hips, legs, arms, teeth and anything in human body anatomically correct.
If you get the perspective off in drawing the feet (though simply formed) the whole figure looks perspectively off
I disagree about feet not being difficult to draw.
Adelso Corona is the Inker ... So that has a lot to do with look getting better.
Its funny cus Deadpool and Spiderman's Masks are supposed to act like eyes.
I don't even think it's the lack of effort. It's lack of style more like
Fucker draws like a damn middle schooler.
He needs to take a sketching course or really any art class in general.
It's so fucking bad I can't believe this is allowed to happen. Really there was no better artist anywhere at all?
Congrats on your 100th episode! Really happy to see you do another Liefeld review, the first video of yours I found was the last Liefeld one so it all comes full circle. I also really like Liefeld's work tho it's not perfect it has a lot of energy and I love 90s style art. I can't believe its been two years already!
So is Rob Liefeld basically the Kid Rock of comics?
Great episode, so funny. Great content also. I love all you episodes and hope it goes on for years and years.
Ah yes, 2 of Rob liefelds best characters with stunning designs. "I can't believe it's not Deadpool" and "I can't believe it's not cable" are some of the best works of comic book fiction
Don't forget "I can't believe it's not Wolverine."
How could you forget "I can't believe that woman's spine bends that way"
Just found this TH-cam channel! Tons of fun! And clever observations and well produced. Jealous I didn’t think of it first!!! Thank you for the content keep it up!!!
everything tastes like chemicals because everything is chemicals
Underrated comment.
Lol, any time he said “it just tastes like chemicals and sugar” I was just thinking “dude, that’s soda, you’re describing soda”
Exactly...H2O...water is a chemical. I usually say something like...I hate sucralose...it tastes like laboratory disinfectant. Even though I've never tasted laboratory disinfectant.
Not gonna lie, never was able to stand his art until you showed the recent deadpool issue, I'm actually quite impressed and he seems to have improved a lot!
Of course not. He's the biggest hack in comics. He is both a horrendous illustrator and a swipe artist.
Congrats on the 100 episodes!
He's the one the luckiest hacks out there, he's the idol of shitty to mediocre artists. Many Artists 100 times better than him can only dream of a 1/10th of the fame and money he's got.
I'm surprised one of his 'tropes' wasn't Swiping. That would have definitely ended up with a swig of soda!
Congratulations! !
The Spiderman panel top left on the wall is hilarious.
yeah i don't think rob liefield artwork has improved that much since the 90's and in fact his artwork looks really bad. Also congrats 100 episode man :)
Adelso Corona is the Inker in these comics ... So that has a lot to do with look getting better.
@@willdpe1256 boy his name aged well didn't it?
This is honestly my favorite channel!
this soda triggers my lactic acid allergy
Dude, your stomach must be made of steel. LOL
Well, those were certainly less agregous than in the New Mutants one.
Excellsion I give Liefeld credit; he's clearly grown over the decades. He still has his stylistic elements and ruts he falls into, but there's clearly a huge improvement.
Chris Check Agreed
*egregious*
Lol. The test tasting makes me love this video.
21:00 Fitting that the ranch soda smells like FEET. The soda and Rob's art creating a synergy!
Since you mentioned Mike Mignola, I remember in his redditAMA Mike said that he, like Liefeld, did not like to draw feet but was better at hiding them than Liefeld
Very simply, Liefeld is not an artist. It's not a question of style; he just doesn't know what he's doing.
I dont think he acknowledged how bad that art style was
I still consider him an artist… a professional and talented one at that… _B U T,_ a bad one at that… I know I’ll probably never reach to that levels of shading, line shading and coloring but damn… is bad
Talent or skill doesn’t mean it ain’t good looking
I think it's great to see that he's improved and that he's still on books from the big companies sometimes. Kinda nostalgic and makes me happy for him.
I do feel a little bit like if he was still operating as he did in the 90s it would be harder to get away with it now. Not only was that stuff more in vogue then (tho he did help popularize it) but the 90s was also a more lawless period for comics. All sorts of wild shit going on, and more books running at any given time and less scrutiny on those books (most artists wouldn't dare attempt a bathing scene nowadays), etc.
Rob Leifeld and some other Marvels post-bender in some high rise office building trying to hit deadlines on multiple books in the early 90s is the dream, man
"Guns like look like tubes"
More love (and a like and a sub) from Kentucky! It was great to see the Ale-8 carton make an appearance. :)
