  • From www.swimmingpo... this video talks about why swimming pools are so darned expensive and what you can potentially do to make a pool installation more affordable. Of course no swimming pool installation is actually cheap but there are definitely some ways that you can get yourself swimming for a lot less money than you might be expecting.

Great discussion, Steve. +1 to the "buy a house with a pool" idea. In 2020 - mid-pandemic - I reluctantly agreed to go in on my wife's dream house that incidentally included a 14-year-old in-ground pool. That's why I was reluctant. As far as I could tell from sales around the same time in our neighborhood, the pool had no effect on the price. Equipment refresh was about $3000. All else was in nice shape. Flash forward... We love the pool, and the house is worth 45% more than we paid. My wife is a wise person.

Great job discussing options Steve . As a contractor one could hire out a mason, plumber, nd electrician. Save $ , but apply time nd work as well to save .
Another great point you made was how climate is affecting the design. Had no idea until now.
As always thanks again for all your support, education and technical knowledge on the subject.

Love my liner pool. All you have to do is remove the cheesy borders they use and pick a nice pattern and you'd never know it's a liner until you're up close. Also super easy to maintain.

Unless you're wealthy, it's a no brainer... vinyl pool or no pool. I bought a pool kit in 2008. I only did this because I had a friend who'd done it and used the company she did. I didn't have the friends and family to help me like she and husband did. So I set out to find people I could pay to do the work. It worked for the most part. I had less problems than some FB pool group people have had with actual pool builders!!!! Mine ended up costing under $20k. The kit itself was around 6k, and I added a lot of extras...dive board, slide, heater, salt system! Of course, costs have risen a lot since 2008! I could not have had my pool without a diy kit.

Can you recommend some quality vinyl liner pool manufacturers or on ground? Here in California its gunite gunite gunite and expensive fiberglass [not sure why that is]

I was 'lucky' & managed to get a liner pool for $0. All I had to do was remove it, so 3 days in November & the pool was removed - intact & dissembled. Came with everything - heater, filter, pump. Now I just have to move between 80 - 120 tonnes of soil to put in my back garden - now I need to buy a digger... lol - real world problems...

what are your thoughts on block/concrete wall vinyl liner pool. the condition i see some of these steel walls in it seems concrete could have better longevity? assuming its footed and built right with good drainage.

A block wall vinyl pool can be a great pool. Overbuilt in all the right ways if you do a quality job.

No such thing as a cheap pool, it’s a luxury not a necessity 🤔

True, pools are considered to be in the "leisure" industry.
Other products along side are boats and RVs.

@@notanotherone5564 Covid may have had something to do with that.
People with money couldn't do their month long family trip to whatever country.
So they pulled the trigger on a backyard inground pool.
Demand spiked, 21% over the pre-covid year..
Even above ground pools were sold out altogether, meaning that there were zero on the market.
Prices were already increasingly rising before that ($60K buys you what $20K did 10 years earlier), but go figure, the prices never came down afterwards.
The sad part is that a lot of swinging dick contractors decided to get into the pool construction business.
I told a number of people with brand new pools that I was booked out for new weekly service. Not because I was, but because at first glance I knew whoever installed the pool had never done one before. (I've been working pools for 29 years).
Bad design. crappy hydraulics, valves in wrong place, equipment I've never even heard of, etc....
But these people can't return their POS in their back yard. Sell the house to get away from it.
But I've been thinking of doing what Steve has been doing, marketing pre-purchase consultation to people in the market for a new pool.
As I've said for a good while now, pools are being bought by people who do not know what they are buying, and pools are being sold by people who do not know what they are selling.
      Sorry for the rant!!
