Hay guy you keep up this work I had a hart attack 5 days ago and this song pulled me through my God bless you and your family I play this over and over thank you this by all means from my ❤ thank you 👍👍👍
What a beautiful song, performed by an incredibly gifted man. Old Leatherstocking showed me how beautiful the banjo could be, and he continues to remind me
Clifton Hicks singing about Jesus with a ring on his finger. Thank God for using unlikely vessels to send powerful messages. Can’t wait to see what he has in store for you in the next two or three years.
War and tragedy may have caused him to walk with a hard heart and a stiff neck for many moons, before. This is a joyful testament to God being mysterious and forgiving, not a judgement on the man’s former fallen state.
GREAT ENCOURAGEMENT this Sunday morning im feeling diispondant, too flue ridden to go to church but this song lifts me up with gladness for Clifton and all the appreciative people who listen to this song me too
So true and Thank You for encouraging us through your musical work to hang in there for those great times ahead. I like this. Basic and confident as we should be.
Great song and excellent performance! I like the mellow singing in this one! Sooner or later God`s gonna cut us all down. Then we go to Heaven and live happily ever after!
For a very long time I blamed God for the loss of people I loved, good people who were caught by the hooks of addiction and were gone so early. I couldn't understand how they had been taken so young. Every year older I get I realise how much more complicated it was, and how many ways you can get trapped into things. I no longer level that blame at God, I realise now that we are all just trying to survive, and that our agency can save us or damn us. I wish nothing but good health to any who read this.
I really enjoyed this. God bless you friend. I’m new to the banjo for the most part, and I started building a few odd kinds of banjos last year. I use somewhat unlikely things for the body of them. They seem to always get good compliments. Anyway, thank you very much for sharing this video. A very happy Thanksgiving to you.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo what's to be unsure about Luigi? the guy game ended a ceo and the American public loves it. it's some Pretty Boy Floyd-esq folk inspiration.
Hey Clifton, do you have any suggestions finding more of these old time gospel songs? I cant find much on youtube pertaining to clawhammer gospel. Thank you!
I recommend Art Rosenbaum's "Art Of Field Recording" Volume 2 (Volume 1 is out of print). It includes an entire CD of religious songs. Dock Boggs did a number gospel songs on his 1960s albums. See also "The Original Folkways Recordings Of Doc Watson And Clarence Ashley" for some more polished examples of old-time gospel. The best examples, I think, are found in Alan Lomax's 12-disc Deep River of Song field recordings.
Amazing! For the life of me the melody in this song seems similar to the one in another ballad. I’m not sure which, perhaps “prodigal song”? In Spanish early modern ballads, this melody adaptation or recycling for religious themes is called variation “a lo divino”. Many examples in early modern ballads. I’m thrilled to see and hear it alive here! I can play German war in this tuning and some Dock Boggs too!
Hello Mr. Hicks! You inspired me to start a channel. Your work is very special. I’ve got a video of this song on the gourd banjo. I would like to know your opinion.
This is a pretty tune, reminds me of “I’ve Just Seen The Rock Of Ages”, which is played out of the same tuning. Perfect thing to listen to on a dreary, rainy KY morning.

We are but earthen vessels, brother. Flawed and fleeting but full of purpose.

I think an old folk song like that would sound quite nice on the banjo!
