Pecan Shelling Plant Tour at Miller Pecan Company

  • Earlier this fall we saw pecans harvested and that made us curious what happens after they leave the farm. So Miller Pecan Company gave us a tour of their pecan shelling operation in Afton, Oklahoma. What a facility!
    Come along with us and follow pecans as they get enter in shells and leave shelled. There are a lot of steps and a lot ingenious machines that make it happen. Lots of this equipment was manufactured right here in Oklahoma by Savage Equipment in Madill, Oklahoma.
    In addition to the shelling plant, the Miller's also have their own pecan orchards, cold storage, retail shop and online store.

    Then why so much??? Machines make it easy..we have so many pecans in Louisiana.

      I’m not the best to answer that except to say machinery makes it easier, but still requires purchase and labor. It being seasonal makes those thing’s challenging, too.
      I know if the pecan prices aren’t high enough, some trees don’t even get harvested because it doesn’t pay to do so.
