I love these walks. And I love how you see the beauty in all the little things around you Shinichi. It's the little things (the things some people take for granted) that imo are important. A rainbow, moss growing on a tree, a flower blooming, a bird singing, or a billowy cloud with the sun peeking out. Things like that make me happy.😊
The neighborhood garden areas (commercial or used by members of the community) are one of my very favorite things in Japan. And the houses aren't much smaller than my house in the city of Chicago so I'll move in a heartbeat :)
I love the quiet walks with you. They're so intimate. The birdsong in the background, the peace, the interesting, hidden places you show us, all make for a totally pleasant experience. The urban agriculture in Tokyo was unexpected and delightful to me. Thank you for a totally enjoyable 30 minutes! ❤️
I compare your videos to my everyday life in Puerto Rico and you can barely see people driving cars, but here in PR there’s a lot of people driving cars, we rely a lot on having a car to move around. So if that was PR streets would be filled with cars, so I find watching your videos so peaceful.
Whoever said the houses look ugly, first of all is disrespectful borderline ignorant. To me those houses look nice because they are all different not like cookie cutter models found in many town in the US. Great video, keep it up!!! Peace
As a Tokyo resident, I really appreciate your comment! I agree woever said the houses in Tokyo look ugly is disrespectful. Different countries, different house styles.
I've been in Tokyo 5 times already. Last time I stayed for 45 days in Itabashi-ku... I loved it!!! Very close to the very active part of Tokyo and yet so peaceful making you feel like if you are far away from the city in the countryside. Can't wait to visit Japan again. BTW, I live in NYC and this city is very active off course but you don't have any city close by to experience the beautiful countryside of upstate NY. That's a huge advantage of living in Tokyo. You can switch from the electricity of the metro area to the peaceful of the countryside just in 10 minutes. I know that because Itabashi-ku is 7 minutes from crowded Ikebukuro! Love it
@@guillermovargas8564 You have been to Tokyo 5 times and stayed for 45 days in Itabashi-ku? WOW! You are right about Itabashi where is a peaceful residential area and close to busy and crowded Ikebukuro. I am always happy to see/hear tourists from overseas enjoy and show their respect to our culture and manners as you.
Yes! Totally agree. I can't stand the cookie cutter houses here. I think it's nice how some of the houses there are new and some are old. Gives the neighbourhoods character.
These people are HIGH talking trash about "ugly small houses" in Tokyo. Are you kidding me? I'd sell a liver lobe and a kidney to be so close to fun and good food. I don't need a 4K sq ft McMansion to be happy. Love the walk series. Keep them going!👍💕
We're moving to Japan in 18-24 months so I can open a branch of my business there. Seeing these neighborhood walks have been excellent as we can see various places to consider buying a property for when we get there.
Love these walks, I love to see different architecture. I find the houses really pretty and interesting, this coming from someone living in a not so architecturally interesting small 81 yr old house. AlsoI live 7 miles from a big city and we get deer in our yard all the time. Still lots of woods around here.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS BEAUTIFUL AREA . These homes are very Pretty.. I didn’t realize that in Tokyo in the City had single family homes .. We are in our 60’s & have not traveled. Arigato, Shinichi-san for yet another showing around of what I didn't know much about living in the Tokyo suburb. What I admire the most in Japanese folk, is that they did not let any vacant land go idle, and plant vegetables on them. Its their survival instinct that's working for their good.
Love it that you can grow produce in the middle of residential areas, also the pockets of green areas/parks and verge planting are so well taken care of! Love the blue old style monkey bars! You don’t see those anymore because of safety but I grew up playing on those things and survived 😀thank you for these walks!!! I really enjoy them and love to see how other cities organise spaces!!!❤️
I can guarantee your homes and apartments are gorgeous. Like you I love the architecture and design. I live in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. My neighborhood is called Loring, just like the large city park a couple blocks away from where I live. The park typically hosts festivals and big events year round, but it's been eerily quiet since the pandemic started. One of my favorite features of my neighborhood are the skyways, which connect nearly all the buildings downtown. I used to be able to walk from home to work almost completely indoors! Very nice to have during a snowy Minnesota winter or a scorching summer day.
I absolutely loved watching this... Had such a horrible stressful day and this was so incredibly cathartic and relaxing. Thanks please keep it up and keep making these videos! We miss Japan so much. We live in Auckland New Zealand... Hopefully we will get back to Japan one day! Xxx

I have to agree with you about the houses. Even if they're old, that's what I love about a neighborhood like this! All the houses are different and colorful! Would love to live in a nice neighborhood like this ❤
I find the little differences between the wards interesting too! And the houses are precious. I even like the looks of the apartment buildings. I would live anywhere there in a heartbeat! 💖 Here in the US I live near downtown in Asheville NC which is a pretty big city. I'd much rather live in a cute suburb where I could safely and happily walk around like you do. 🤗
I agree. The wards are amazingly different from how we do things. Very different. Thanks for pointing that out l, Shinichi! I am in the Asheville are too. We are surrounded by the Blue Ridge mountains. Beautiful here, but walks are not peaceful. Downtown is vibrant and there is so much going on. Here, suburb walks are peaceful and mountain trails are zen! I live outside the city, so when I want vibrant, I go somewhere downtown. Then I come home to peace and quiet! Good points, Suzi!
More ... I love these walks as you share your world with us. I am making my travel plans ... Japan #1 on my list ... decision due to your sharing Hiroshima, Tokyo, Kyoto (favorites) and Okinawa, Osaka, Yokahama (new spots for me). Have Disney on my list and Universal ... busy times to come. I appreciate seeing different neighborhoods from all over the world! Those narrow sidewalks would take me a while to get used to. I like you pointing out those subtle differences like the sidewalk guard rails and the street lights. I do notice things like that and wonder why they are different. Stay well and safe. You are important to me all the way over here in Minnesota, America.

Definitely in love with Tokyo. Nerima was very pretty too! And thank you for those little bits of greenery amongst the streets, I absolutely love those little parks like that. Opinion on the houses; They seem the perfect size to me, honestly. I would love a house that's in between an American suburban house and an apartment in size, and something without a lawn like those but with a public park so close. Just seems like a win win with less maintenance, gardening/yard work, and easy access to a lot of things. Where I live; Since you mentioned it, I live what I would call suburban sprawl really. A lot of the city I live in is a maze of backroads either connecting up or ending in cul-de-sacs. Pretty nice area of the metro area, so a lot of two, three, or four story houses with big yards. I think it lacks some character and practicality myself, since most of the houses are on their little plot of land with the requisite one tree or whatnot, but at least the area is very green and the houses aren't all prefab. Walking anywhere is practically impossible though, unfortunately, and mass transit besides a pretty sporadic bus line is non-existent. There's a place with a Subway restaurant and a small gas station/convenience store one way, but it's nothing but more and more houses both ways other than that. I WILL say it's a bit better for biking though, since there is a nice lake with a wooded bike trail around it a couple kilometers away. The other major thing within biking distance is the local mall, though I'm not a fan of biking there since it means you have to cross the busy parking lots on your bike.
I used to stay put with a friend of mine living at Sakuradai when I visited Tokyo for holiday for nearly 10 days. The moment you reach Nerima station is where I got hit by nostalgia a lot as I used the Seibu Ikebukuro line to move around to Ikebukuro and also Oizumi Gakuen station where my friend work. Really enjoy the walk and hopefully you will cover Nerima again in future videos Shinichi!
Loved this walk!!Those small areas of farming are so fantastic and well looked after, I would love to be able to buy their produce! thank you so much Shinichi for showing us around!
Really enjoyed this video. There are so many interesting things in someone else’s ordinary everyday. Thank you, Shinichi. Please feel encouraged to do more of these walks. 😊
Very interesting video. I love this kind of walks ! I live u=in a very small hamlet. There are 15 people in the winter and up to 60 in the summer, it is very remote, to do the groceries I have to drive for about an hour.
Well, you asked, so I will tell you about where I live. Many people are surprised to learn that Chicago is not the capital of Illinois. The capital is Springfield, located in the center of the state. The population of Springfield is 115,888 people. I live in a very rural area located west of the capital. It takes 45 minutes to drive (70 miles per hour) from my home to Springfield. The town nearest to my home is a few miles away and has a population of 267 people! My small one bedroom house is located on 6 acres (2.4 hectares) of land. I am surrounded by agricultural land to the East, South, and West. On the North side of my property, there is woodland. The farmers here usually alternate between growing corn and soybeans, mostly used in animal feed. My nearest neighbor is located 1/4 mile (0.4km) away. Very peaceful.
First time watcher here! Am from Indonesia, specifically in the suburbs of Jakarta. It's kinda sad actually how the city that's already lacking in space kept on suburbanizing. A lot of unoptimized space for large roads and parking lots with people living in massive gated communities. Very different with how it is there i see! It's very walkable and very bikable! The train stations and ease of access also seems to be very amazing! I think the area could do with slight more densification, with single family housings can be turned to multi-family that's 3-5 stories high but it's a really cool and nice use of space in a metropolis the size of Tokyo.
Old is not ugly. I think newer houses are not interesting. Nerima looks like a pretty area, even though I know the population density is very high. I hear lots of birds and I'm wondering what they are. We live in a suburban type of area. Many houses in our neighborhood are single story houses called ranch houses and they were built in the '60s. We are near many parks, including a National Park.
The narrow street is scary. Everything about that street is too narrow! I would not drive or walk there. This cars literally had two inches between them while passing! I think the homes are very nice. Minimalist and zen exteriors. If people have not traveled and have not been around different styles of building, they need to acclimate. Some of the homes were just outstanding. I am like you, not crazy about huge high rise apartments. Love the gardens and the pretty walk ways. Love the benches. Sometimes you need a thermos of coffee and just sit on a bench somewhere! Can you get permission to take us to McDonalds and the donut shop? I know your McDonalds is not like ours and the menu is different. Maybe the routine is different. That would be cool. Thanks as always. It was a good walk. Except for that narrow street! Yikes! Lol!
Great video! but if it is possible, could you consider using one of those stabilising gimbals for your camera? It might be a little pricey but I feel that it could really enhance the experience!
The the little flower towards the start that smell nice in australia we call them star jasmine trees smell so good yes shinichi!!! Nice walk and talk about the houses and apartments I feel there cool Japanese places cool old traditional places and new really cool little space saving good design's I say!!!👍🏃♀️
Living in Metro Detroit is interesting. Metro Detroit has it's central Detroit area of 3400 square km of dense urban areas of business and manufacturing. The entire area is 10,000 square km made up of 185 small pocket cities and towns. The business planning of these cities are built to drive. It takes me 10 minutes to drive through residential streets into my small pocket city to work. If I want to go to downtown Detroit I need to drive onto the expressway/freeway and drive for 35minutes for 30 miles. Residential areas are built to walk for recreation only. It truely is the Motorcity. Metro Detroit is built by cars and for cars. A blessing and a curse.
I lived in a City with 30000 people. But it was too noisy and packed for me and my husband and of course our baby boy Benji. By the way benji is our 13 years old Shih Tzu 🥰 now we live in a small city with over 8000 people an it is so peaceful here. 🤗
You will be fine here. All train stations in the city have elevators to get you up to the platform. You will have to look for staff to help you out, but once they know where you want to go, they will take you into the train and have another staff members wait for you when you arrive.
Great walk! Just wondering if Japan has any gov't building codes regarding people with disabilities. They have narrow walkways with poles, and sometimes no sloped curbs for wheelchair accessibility. Btw, that was the first time I actually saw someone navigating the streets in a wheelchair as you were crossing. I certainly didn't see them on the trains when we were in Japan a couple of years ago. How do families address those challenges if they are caregivers?
Those patches of land used for growing vegetables are called "allotments" in England where they are leased from the local council.
I love these walks. And I love how you see the beauty in all the little things around you Shinichi. It's the little things (the things some people take for granted) that imo are important. Nice neighbourhood. Nakano apartments are expensive tho, a 3LDK typically cost around US$400K-500K.
Cool
nice walk, 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
I really love these walk vids, so fun and interesting
Very interesting video. I love this kind of walks ! I live u=in a very small hamlet. There are 15 people in the winter and up to 60 in the summer, it is very remote, to do the groceries I have to drive for about an hour.
/ love this type of video , So So much . Thank you 😊
Well, you asked, so I will tell you about where I live.
I really enjoy watching your videos, and your TabiEats 👍. Is this your hobby or your main job?
It’s my main and only job. :)
Shinichi is it easy to get around Japan being disabled? I have a motorized scooter and was wondering if I could get on the trains with it?
It might be difficult as there are usually lots of stairs in the train stations.
I spent a year in Nogata, but I can’t recognise anything in this video - it feels like it’s all changed
that house had 2 vending machines outside
