Stayed at Treforest Poly in the mid to late 70's. It was like looking at a future Dearne Valley, after the closure of more pits, as S Wales suffered more before S Yorks. Plucky people, lots of camaraderie, tough, rough, kind, communal...but big strapping lads need real work and money to justify their existence. Travesty really what happened, although there are better jobs than coal mines and steelworks to be had. Ironic how many coal mine villages in both areas could be quite hard on the eye, but not far from them you could find some lovely countryside and views. I lived through the strike in the end, and saw all the traumas and battles, and it would be good to go back to S Wales some time when the time is right. I bet it was still thriving in the 60's with Tom Jones, Max Boyce, and then the Welsh rugby team that came out of that time into the early and mid 70's. Probably the best team that I've ever seen, hence the greatest match of all time, 1973, Ba Baas vs All Blacks. How would I describe that match and some of the tries...well, even if I was the world's greatest poet, I would not do it justice, but what I know is that there you had the inner characteristic of the Valleys and Mining villages expressing themselves that day...in poetic and charismatic fortitude.

My mother used to work in the Tax Office in Taff Street - near the Wimpy Bar! (When we lived in Treorchy)

It's a good job the actress Doris Hare wasn't known for her singing then, or you'd had videos of Bargoed with her voice lol.
