  • Apologies to the majority of my regular subscribers as this will probably only be of interest to people from my home town of Pontypridd and my friends from those days. I introduce fifty feet (approx 3 minutes) of forty-two year old vintage silent Super 8 Cinefilm I shot either autumn 79 or spring 1980. I've included some subtitles and title cards to identify/tribute certain people but would love to see comments below from anyone who is in the film or who can identify those I can't recall. Please feel free to share this on your social media to anyone who might want to see it from Hawthorn/Ponty in those days of Mod Revival, Post-Punk and Proto-New Romantic (this was the time when I decided there needed to be a Glam Rock revival...).
Thanks to Deb Wilcox and the Mods/Admins on all the Ponty Facebook pages who have allowed me to share this and and my previous Mill Street video.

Glad you enjoyed it. I was very pleased to be able to share it this way, as originally only around a dozen people had ever seen it.

@@outlawbookselleroriginal I love anything 'Ponty Past', having been born and bred as a Rhydfelin native. A few years ago I bought a job lot of records direct from the BBC archive and by chance it contained a 7" vinyl recording of the ambient noise of a Saturday Market at Pontypridd, 1967. Echoes of a time now, sadly, long passed. 👍

Hiya mate, came across these and realised my late dad, Rodney Hayman would've been here during this timeframe! I think my uncle may have been too. Great to see what it would've looked like during their time at the school as I and my brother's also went there. A lot changed and also a lot stayed the same 🤣

Hi Stephen , very long time no see but still recognised you immediately 😄. My brother just shared the video with me. . Its hard to tell but I’m pretty sure that’s me coming off the bus from Cilfynydd, I think Mark Willets grabs me round the neck. So poignant to see Jub in the footage. Amazing to see Dickie Owen again, haven’t seen him in a long time. I can’t believe the bowing down to Nigel Williams 😂, will share this with him, he’ll love it . I’m still in touch with him , Phil Geen ( I went to the Stranglers gig in the Top Rank too) Jason Webb and Gary Williams . I also saw Andrew Humphrey again after a long time a few years ago ( unfortunately it was my fathers funeral but that’s his business, he was very good). You’re looking good, kept the long hair , very impressive! It’s great footage, brings back some great memories , thanks for sharing 👍John Marenghi

Hey John, great to hear from you! I can't recall you at the Strangs gig, did you go with me, Dickie, Micky McGrath, Raymond Green, Phil Geen and John Rogers? That was the last time they played that venue, October 79. Haven't seen Phil or the others you mention in decades, apart from Humpy, who I see now and then. Sorry to hear about your dad- my father died 3 years ago, so I know how it is. Do let the guys see this as you say-cheers, Steve

@@outlawbookselleroriginal Hi Steve, I went with Jason Webb, pretty sure we met you all there but it was a long time ago 😄. Also saw The Stranglers in Colston Hall in Bristol a year later and seen them quite a few times in recent years ( as well as the likes of Stiff little Fingers and the Undertones) , old habits die hard eh! 😂. I’ve shared the link with the others , as Jason said it’s amazing any of us got out of there alive 😂

@@226JGM -Now you mention it, I do recall bumping into you and Jason there at some point. I used to go and see them at every Bristol and Cardiff gig for years, then places like Shepton Mallet, Gloucester and other places. I stopped going to see the band around 2013. During my many years living in Bath I ended up going for a drink with Hugh Cornwell once, bumping into him pretty often in the 80s, JJ Burnel rang me up at home in 2001 and he, I and Dave Greenfield went for drinks at Tucker's Grave Inn near Frome with Baz Warne, then their new gtr player. Used to go to Baz' regular solo gigs in Bath and chat all the time, great days. I pretty much stopped going to gigs in 2014 for various reasons, good to hear you've been rocking along!

Great stuff Stephen, for some reason I thought this was September 1979 after we'd just returned to school, my thinking behind this because I left Hawthorn in April 1980, but I could be wrong.

Bloody great stuff , I’m the same age as you ( born ‘63) but I went to Coed-y-Lan , so would have been one of your rivals so to speak….
We played Hawthorne regularly during the rugby season so if you ever played I probably played against you at some point?
Couple of things to pick up on from your last few videos , you showed the Prince of Wales pub in Cardiff , but at one time there was club above the porn cinema called “Grannies” (spelling is correct) where I was lucky enough to see the Damned just prior to the release of Machine Gun Etiquette , with Algy on bass……Victimize we’re supporting , two of which members went on to join the Damned (Bryn and Roman) cuing their most commercial piriod.
Couple of guys I think went to Hawthorne were the Varga brothers , Micky and Eeme (Hungarian family I believe) and I think Bwl boy Garin Jenkins end up there after getting expelled from Coedylan who went on to win many caps for Wales rugby.
I played drums in a punk/new wave band at various times called Bondage / Poison Dwarf-O / Blaue Reiter and played Ponty many times
Cracking stuff , keep ‘em coming …

I never played for my school as a senior. Blaue Reiter I saw many times, Bari Goddard and Steve Ashford are good friends of mine, you must have been in at the stage with the transition from Poison Dwarf-O? otherwise I'd know you- I first saw BR at the opening night of Room 101, The Stargazer Suite, top of the Georgian Club. Nick Horton was drumming for them then. Great days! Glad you enjoyed the vid!

@@outlawbookselleroriginal …yeah , I was with them from the start when we were called Bondage then switching name to Poison Dwarf-O and then to Blaue Reiter I was only with them for a short time as BR before leaving to go hitchhiking around Europe with a mate , but I remember playing the two songs that were released on the single “where he stands”….but by then I had left and it wasn’t me drumming on the 45.
I’ve still got a few of Bari’s original artwork but still waiting for the time I can sell it off for millions ……I played the Georgian (Gas Lane??) many times with them when they tried to start off a bit of “scene” there every week…..I’ve still got quite a few old printed tickets and posters that Bari designed for various gigs for us.
Neither of us can remember the other but we must have mixed in the same circles having the same kind of music interest…..next time you see Bari tell him Dai wishes him well
