Just remember that all the kids want to feel loved ... I once had a little girl ask me in Sunday school if she could be the line leader as we were getting ready to walk down the hall... I told her I don't do line leaders, I wish I had something more clever to say

Hi Cindy, your videos are really helpful. I don’t really teach pre-k, but I’m a pre-k after school care “teacher”. We’re almost halfway through the year now and I haven’t done the best job at getting my kids to listen to me. It’s my first time doing this. I was wondering if you have any recommendations for re structuring the class, getting them to listen to me again, etc. I know you have many videos on tips for the classroom which are applicable to my situation now, but I’m assuming they work best at the start of the year. Now they are pretty accustomed to the way the class is currently led. Can you think of any changes that might turn things around ?
Lindsay, the first thing that comes to mind is to gather the children together and tell them that we are going to make some after-school rules. Have the children give ideas on what they think may be good rules for everyone to follow (the children may say things like: "no hitting" "everyone needs to share", etc.). Be sure when you write the rules, you put them in positive terms (for example, no hitting would be "keep hands and feet to self"). As the teacher, you can suggest rules as well (ex: when the lights get turn off, everyone needs to clean up). Post the rules (with pictures, if possible) and review the rules each day. Then when a child breaks a rule, you can take them to the rules and review them with the child and express what behaviors you expect. By having the students develop the rules with you, they will have more buy in and be more apt to follow them. Try this first then let me know how it went. I can't wait to hear!
Lindsay Mateo When I need to make a major change in the middle of the year, I try to relate it to something outside of school. I often use the new year as an “excuse” to make changes, start out new. One year, my teacher left in the middle of the year, and I suddenly became the head teacher for the first time. The class had a bunch of substitutes and part time helpers! It was crazy, & so was the class! It wasn’t until April when things started to settle. In the spring, I talked about how the weather is changing and everything was being reborn and growing. Then we discussed what changes we can make in class.
Can you do some tips for new ta too. Some classroom activities and how they can improve themselves so can help them with lesson. I’m working as a supply ta at key stage 1.

You could dress up the baseball player with tiny Ken doll clothes or an Indian headdress or something that the kids would like
