I work at a comic/manga store and my manager won't stop talking about this series. He says he prefers it to Vagabond, which I found shocking but makes sense since it's less grounded in realism. I think I'll be getting the deluxe version while I can :)
I hope you enjoy it! It's certainly a different vibe to Vagabond. BOTI is more about the cycle of revenge whereas Vagabond goes on more about the meaning of strength. If you're more into that I can certainly see you enjoying it more
better than Vagabond i say, like way way better.. Sure the Samurai setting in Vagabond is awesome and the art style is good (although it's really generic and mediocre) but the plot is all over the place, it started normal but halfway it's not easy to follow anymore and lots of lots of unnecessary panels that leaves u disappointed.. fight scenes are the same, like you could compare it to the other fight scenes in previous chapters and all of them would look the same.. while BOTI has more freedom because it's different, it doesn't really stick to the whole "Samurai setting" and "Samurai realism/vibe" and the fight scenes aren't repetitive because it has the freedom to do such unbelievable but awesome things.. The plot is not that complicated and it's consistent..
Bro the arc of perfection of anatomy was my favorite just the morality of sacrificing men and sacrificing your mind for an ideal just for it to be wrong hahah
The animation and direction is great in the anime. However it’s not a good adaptation. They adapt 210 chapters (some chapters have up to 60 pages), in just 24 episodes. To put it in comparison, the 1997 anime which covers like 70 chapters for one of the arcs in berserk, has 25 episodes (and it still skipped some stuff like wyld). The blade of the immortal anime was way to rushed

I read it in the gym on the bikes with the samurai champloo ost ... best way i remember getting so hyped i cycled harder with the right song right moment lost a fuck ton of weight hahahaha
One of my absolute favorites. Amazing work. The only issue I have with it would be the whole Manji experiment arc. Horribly paced and almost grinds the manga to a screeching halt. Outside of that one arc it's still one of my top ten manga though.
I remember seeing this around most of mal comparing it to vagabond my 2nd favorite manga before monster and I decided to give it a shot and my god i am loving it and the character development is amazing even for the female characters
I am looking for a video with spoilers. The story is so needlessly complicated, I need an abridged version to understand what each character was actually trying to do. And the main plot is a joke by the way, since the characters fall flat on their faces unable to stick to their guns and get things done...
I really don't know if this manga is any good to be honest. The plot is all over the place, there's some bizarre inconsistencies and holes. The "killing 1000 evil man" thing is pretty much forgotten, and not a main focus at all. The main character is all about being a cool badass but due to the need to show off the "immortal body" gimmick of the manga he is constantly getting owned like a little bitch, if it wasn't for the fact he's immortal he'd be a background canon fodder. But one of the worst things that just ruined the entire thing for me is the main villain, he starts the manga by being a sadistic evil prick with an evil smirk but then the next time he shows up he is this very sympathetic down to earth stoic sword genius, to the point it's literally unbelievable the same guy would do the things he did that kick off the main plot...this is a manga that looks amazing, and has the feel and style of being mature and deep, but when you look at it closer it's really messy. If you wanna see some violent stylish sword battles go for it, but just leave your brain out of it, quite literally style over substance
Btw the 2008 anime is worth watching too. If for no other reason than its got a soundtrack done by Kow Otani, who did the soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus. Also this channel has some good production quality, the editing and everything is really nice. Surprised you don’t have more subs.
Definitly you should, but darn finding even omnibuses this day is hard, that bloody dark horse, they cut printing omnibus variant in order to bring that big,fat deluxe version.
I agree with a large part of what you said. I also believe that the art is better then the entire story. It has panels where the artist is not consitent imo... but drawing faces is difficult. The story has good parts, but it does drag and I believe some ideas are really badly developed. The part I disagree on the largest, is the ending... because, I mean, ... what a deus ex machina trick did they pull in that one? ... and it's not the only part where a plotline gets resolved out of the blue by an almost magical WTF?!? moment. And that kinda put this work lower on my list of favourites then it could have been if these annoying things weren't there.
Ooo it's been a looong time since I read Vagabond. From memory, I enjoyed Immortal more. Take that with a grain of salt though! I'd need to reread Vagabond to give you any sort of reliable comparison
I consider vagabond far more superior. Musashi's effort to find his meaning in the world and meaning of what he is doing and his own identity is very beautifully shown. I don't know about blade of the immortal. But reaching the height of vagabond isn't easy.

Then, how could you call it better than vagabond which has complex, beautifully done and meaningful plot. I mean vagabond has fights but it is never battle centric but plot as well as character centric more similar to berserk than anything. That's why we never focus on character's progress in story. We actually focused in progress of character in their own self and understand what is true meaning of their skills and life. What is the true meaning of invincibility and free will.
@HERMIT You lay out some good points! I think most people would agree with you, that Vagabond is their preferred series and objectively a better manga. Personally, I just didn't enjoy it that much. I honestly couldn't tell you why but I think sometimes you can read a series and miss what other people find so enjoyable. I know when I read HunterXHunter for the first time I really didn't like it (I've since reread and changed my mind.) That might be the same for Me with Vagabond. It just didn't engage me and I don't really have any strong feelings for the series
Good on ya for trying it again! I can get why it's not for everyone. The art style is 100% what kept me invested through the first arcs until the Mugai-Ryu showed up

Why not both? Vagabond is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion.
