  • This week I’ve got a simple tip for you beginner bass players that will completely transform the way you approach your playing and improve your left hand technique. We're going to look at a popular aspect of fretting hand technique I call Joint Barring. This provides a great method for smooth shifting from string to string

    I like to go from the 1 to the 3 or 4 to the 6 with my pinky and ring finger alternating strings and then I will try it with a floating thumb.

    Tnx for the video. As a beginner I thought playing two frets across two different strings with one finger was a wrong approach. And I always wondered how to get that smooth legato. Now I know. ;)
    Tnx Mark!!

    I feel like my pinky is too weak. 😭 the joints in my pinky kind of lock up, since there's a lot of tension in my hand.

    i learned this surprisingly late. no one bothered to show me. the first time i saw it addressed was, ironically enough, in one of eric haugen's vids where he played bass for a change and joint barring and its importance was literally the first thing he mentioned.

    Good helpful lesson, especially for beginners to intermediate. I learnt to do this from just experimenting when I started playing so I could get the legato sound Mark mentions. Sometimes I use the pinky and ring finger etc depending on what I'm playing which I'm sure I've seen Mark cover in other lessons. Cheers

    • @hans-joachimbierwirth4727
      @hans-joachimbierwirth4727 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just don't use it. Needing the thumb on the fretting hand is always caused by too much pressure used for fretting. You learn the exact amount of pressure by keeping the thumb away from the neck. Practice for a while differently using a playlist of easy songs doing playalongs until you don't need the thumb anymore.
