Some people have been bringing up "This isn't how it normally looks, this is exaggerated. This is way better on a CRT tv, etc"
Maybe, yeah. But you can't replicate the CRT look accurately through a TH-cam video and you can't expect everyone to have a CRT tv to watch this video or play this game on in 2022... The internal resolution scale shown in this video is that of Native PS1 (1x, not higher or lower) with the exception of a 16:9 aspect ratio, and 9x (4k).

Well... You can activate a CRT filter on the emulator, I believe. At least many other emulators have many visual filters to activate to reach a specific effect 🤔 Very interesting video, nonetheless.

Still though, 4k is somewhat pointless and arguably a waste of GPU, CPU & electricity. I'd rather have more effects or just use less juice at 2k (retina) than 4k which is overkill.

In the end, one has to selectively turn these filters on and off for each games. They can look great for some, but many others were designed with the grainy, pixelated picture in mind. Some used this pixelation to hide imperfections that suddenly become visible on artifically enlarged resolutions. Others used pixelation to simulate color transitions, transparency, fog etc. It is hit and miss with these filters.

Honestly, bumping render res for these games isn't worth the tradeoff of making menus seem crummy and old. The best compromise (for me anyways) would be native res with a nearest neighbor scale and a crt filter to hide some of the imperfections that CRT tvs wouldn't have shown us.

    • @EversonBernardes
      @EversonBernardes 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

Dunno if Duckstation has the option, but in Retroarch (running the Beetle PSX Hardware core) you can set so it renders internally upscaled but downscales to native, so you get a much cleaner native res output. You can then run a CRT shader over that and it really ties the graphics together really nicely.
CRT Royale is a pretty great emulation you can set up as different kinds of CRT displays.

The part 0 would even shrink the whole car to be very large pixel only to drive with a simple block and rotating with dark grey squares by squaresoft. It is really something which has to be in the game which also has the top graphic as an effect called Magische Windhose. As a programmed wind which changes the graphics from 0-7 and you start with 3 as Michael schumacher who suddenly is in part 1 and then part 7 and all this is part 8 which never will be because it would be called doublezero Swiss Alps with Sic Alps as Soundtrack.

CRT or not, the chunky pixels and unfiltered textures just look better

  • @BeastOfSoda

Looks okay. What I would have done is use a CRT shader via Reshade, as the one in Duck is pretty basic, and fake a scanline effect over the upscaling (maybe lowering the scaling factor, in order to conceal some of the artifacts from excessive upscaling and kind of blend in those reflection maps, as well as the low res 2D elements).

It all reminds me to the Pc version of those late 90s and early 2000s games

The geometry corrected version on a cRT !!!! I think that’d be cool

Beautiful work, but I like the original better for nostalgic reasons. The pixels have charm

Not only does the upscale look fantastic, but I had no idea there were ways to get PS1 games that were framelocked running at 60FPS, very nice.

I think I'd take geometry correction, 60FPS, and draw distance enhancement, but I'd rather a CRT filter than 4K. I yearn for the day we have a true replacement for CRT in retro gaming.

I agree. I also love super sampling a game down to 240p if I can on a CRT as it makes the game look better with cleaner edges

I prefer the original with the geometry corrections. With a CRT filter it's very nostalgic.

Seeing the pixelated native resolution on PS1 with the jittering graphics literally makes my eyes hurt because it's really difficult to see whats coming up in the distance, something which you really need in a racing game.

I think the sweet spot would be to run it upscaled to 4k, but then downscaled to 270p 50fps on a widescreen SD CRT TV.

when you say 4k upscale, was this upscaled with AI in post? or are you running the game at 4k in the emulator?

The upscaled looks seriously amazing, damn, very impressed given its not a remake ect.
I spent an obscene amount of time playing GT1 & GT2 way back when, it was a pretty special game for the time and a genuine leap on from the Ridge Racers and Sega Rallys of that period.

I heard rumors out there saying playing a game on a old crt with 640*480 screen resolution to be fantastic experience. the refresh rate the graphics fit with the old CRT. but I sure some people might disagree on this but this is just some rumors out there and I agree with it

I wish people stopped using "upscalling" when dealing with emulators, "upscalling" is something done artificially to add "missing" details.
An emulator renders the game internally at whatever resolution you pick, it's all native internal resolution.
    Good stuff though.

That's because you likely played it on a CRT and those low res games looks a whole lot better on those displays than it does on modern LCDs
