I've been to Japan three times now and I've relied on Tokyo Cheapo every single time. You guys give such great advice, practical tips, and deals. I really appreciate all you do for us. Thank you.
It really depends on how you travel, whether you’ve been to Japan before perhaps and even if you consider the rail journey as exciting and part of the trip. We are often on the first Shinkansen of the day leaving a place which often means we’re at the destination before many things are open. We also travel light (carry on only) so luggage isn’t a big deal. Most of the Shinkansen lines offer fantastic views so I love it. I’ve no desire to stay in the bigger cities of Japan anymore so a full day/night in a smaller area is often enough (can always return).
New prices definitely not worth in my opinion, but absolutely would love to see new itinerary vids, I'd really love to see some out from Osaka as well!
One thing you didn't mention is, that the JR Pass is NOT valid as is on the Nozomi and Mizuho trains ( the most frequent and fastest ones ) and you need to buy extra tickets for these trains even with the JR Pass. For example Tokyo to Kyoto/Shin-Osaka is 4960¥ on top of the JR Pass on Nozomi train.
When I visited Japan in 2017, my itinerary went around Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo, with only 1 shinkansen tix and no JR Pass. Here's how I did it: - I landed in Kansai airport in Osaka, and then got an ICOCA card which I used to hop on and off local trains and busses in every city I visited (around JPY 4-5k in total for 10 days) - For Osaka - Kyoto trip I rode a local inter-city train (not JR) becuz both cities are close to each other. - For Kyoto - Tokyo trip I rode a shinkansen (around JPY 12k for nozomi) - I flew back home from Haneda airport in Tokyo. From my experience, the added cost of a return airplane tix to land and take off from 2 different cities was still cheaper than the price of 1 shinkansen tix. Even with taxis to the train stations and the airport limousine to Haneda, my total transport expense was still under JPY 25k. Way cheaper than buying a 7-day JR pass which was JPY 29k. Now that it's post-pandemic and things are more expensive in general, I think you can still do what I did and save some money.
Thank you for coming to Japan. Next time you go to Japan, please try riding the JR Oito Line from Itoigawa to Minami-Otari, the JR Yamada Line from Morioka to Miyako, and the JR Geibi Line from Niimi to Bingo-Ochiai, as the scenery is beautiful. I would appreciate it if you could take a video at that time. 😊
Thank you so much for your wonderful suggestions! Riding those JR lines sounds like a fantastic way to experience Japan's beautiful scenery. We will definitely keep them in mind for our next visit, and we'll be sure to capture some video footage to share the experience. 😊🚂 Appreciate your recommendation!
I sincerely hope no one adopts a "worth it" itinerary just to make use of the JR Pass. There are far better passes out there that will allow you to explore places in your own pace & save money at the same time, like the JR-West All Area Pass that lets you travel between Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Kanazawa, Toyama and more for 7 days and it only costs 26,000 yen (more or less half the price of the JR Pass!).
That's where we plan on going too and we are a family of 4. I think jr pass is the way to go bc some of the regional lines don't cover all of these cities.
some of the regional passes have also lost their value. Not only have the prices increased but they have also removed flexibility from some of them. The JR East passes used to be any 6 or 7 days (depending on the particular one) within a 14 day period which meant you can take your time at each of the places you visited. It also meant you do some sight seeing then have a a week of skiing and then do more sight seeing (or use the shinkansen to get back to Tokyo). Now they've changed them to 6 consecutive days means to get the value out of it you have to be constantly on the move between towns and cities travelling everyday
You're right, price increases almost all across the board! The Hokuriku Arch Pass, (which between Tokyo and Kyoto via Kanazawa), is still quite good value and worthwhile.
Hi. I will be going to Japan early April for two weeks. ~7 days in tokyo, 4 days in osaka, 2 days in kyoto, then back to tokyo. Can you recommend which pass I should get if any? Thank you.
Hi…so which pass you took for yourself for this itinerary ? As I am travelling to same routes in 1st week of July with my family. Please help. Thank you 🙏🏻
We'll also be travelling through the same routes for around ~14 days in total. I'm also curious about which pass to buy, or should I just get a Suika card and top up regularly?
Hello this video helpt a lot! Can you please advise me if would it be worth getting JR pass for this route: Osaka > Kyoto(daily trip) >Osaka>Tokyo>Osaka for 7 days. Thank you!
I'm still am . 21 days Tokyo to Kagoshima, Kagoshima to Nakasaki,Nakasaki to Osaka . Day trips from Osaka, Osaka to Sendai ( day trip to Aomori) , Sendai to Sapporo, Sapporo to Hakodate, Hakodate back to Tokyo. plus some days left for day Trips from Tokyo .
Individual JR fares have risen very little, and sometimes not at all. I had a 21 day pass in April this year, from Takamatsu to Morioka, stopping at Osaka, Yokohama, Nikko, Nagano, Matsumoto while heading north, and from Morioka to Narita on the last day. The pass was good value for this itinerary then, but not anymore. I doubt if I'll buy one on my next trip to Japan.
I'm looking to stay about week in tokyo. but going to osaka for super mario world for my kids who will be on the trip as well.. what kind of pass should i get?
We will stay a week in Tokyo, afterwards go to Hakone, Nagoya, Osaka, Koyasan, Nara, Kyoto, Takayama, Kanazawa and via Tokyo to Hakodate. There we will rent a car for Hokkaido and after that we will go back to Tokyo by train. As I calculated, the 2 weeks JR Pass is still worth it with our route.
My wife and I are traveling to Japan for our very first time in March 2024. Directly after arrival at Haneda airport we plan on taking the train to Hakone to spend one night there. We then want to spend 4 days in the Kyoto area and using those days to visit Osaka, Nara and perhaps even Himeji before flying further to Okinawa where we will be staying for one week. Our last 4 days in Japan will be spend in Tokyo. What passes would you recommend?
I would not recommend going to so many places in such little time. You are both gonna be drained of energy from all the walking, transporting your luggage, and not giving your bodies time to rest. Trust me. I've been there 7 times and learned after my first trip. It's especially not worth it with the insane price hikes of all the JR passes. It would be cheaper for you both to fly from Haneda to Osaka.
Hi wanna ask u something..due to jr pass increase currently..we are planning to go japan tokyo, kyoto and osaka total 12days..isit worth it to use jr pass or i dividual train will be better? Need your help n i fo alot🙏
If you plan to travel long-distance and visit several cities in Japan, the JR Pass is still worth it. For a trip just between Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, it's better value to go with individual tickets 😊
Hi there, thanks for this, it's very helpful. I have a question about the Hokuriku Arch Pass, I wanna do the route the pass is offering but starting from Osaka and not Tokyo. Is that possible? Please let me know, thank you
Just to clarify this will be my trip to Japan, is this a must or will I be able to buy individual tickets if I am going only to Osaka, Kyoto and back to Tokyo?
Hi! My partner and I will be traveling to Japan this November 2024. The hokuriku arch pass seems to be our best bet but I’m still managing my confusion with which trains I can use with the pass. Any help would be great and your videos have been very helpful.
I'm going to Japan next month for the first time. Super excited and also a little overwhelmed with all the planning. I will land in Tokyo, planning to visit Hakone, Iwata, Kyoto and Osaka then return to Tokyo. The JR calculator shows my literary is 36970 yen which is under the 7 day pass price So does that mean i will buy my ticket each way when i get to Japan? Please let me know. Thank you so much !!
My family of four will be spending 4 weeks traveling throughout the country. We believe that a JR Pass will make sense for how much we are traveling in and outside of all the cities, but how will we know for sure?
Hi @everyone I have a query. I am planning to travel to Japan and want to vist these places in this sequence: Tokyo>Osaka>Hiroshima>Osaka>Tokyo. Which pass would be most suitable and economical for me? Thanks for helping.
Hi there, ur video is just what I was looking for. I fly to Japan on the 30.9.24 with my wife and 2 girls aged 12 and 4. I land at Tokyo and then take another flight to Osaka within 2 hours. I spend 2 days in Osaka visiting the universal studios and maybe some sight seeing. I probably would like to visit Kyoto, keeping Osaka as my base still and stay an extra day in Osaka. I then travel to Tokyo where I'll most likely spend a good week at least given my girls are not that much into temples and sight seeing given their young ages. I'll most likely be travelling around Tokyo doing the Disney land and sea, mario kart rides and some tourist shopping. Finally will head to the airport around the 11.10.24 to head back home to Sydney. Which pass do u think I'll do best buying??or do I even need a pass?? Thanks a lot😊
Thanks for making this video. Very helpful! I have watched several of your videos already. I wonder if you could help us decide which rail tickets/pass to buy: We would be visiting Japan in early April 2024: Staying in Tokyo for several days then off to Arima just for a day trip then continue on to Osaka for two nights then to Kyoto for two nights and finally back to Tokyo for 4 more days. I would greatly appreciate any advice and suggestions you could give me. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for your kind words! We are delighted to hear that you find the videos helpful. For your Japan trip in early April 2024, we recommend considering the Japan Rail Pass for convenient and cost-effective travel. Given your itinerary with stops in Tokyo, Arima, Osaka, Kyoto, and back to Tokyo, the JR Pass will cover Shinkansen (bullet trains) between these cities, providing flexibility and savings. Make sure to activate the pass before your journey begins. Enjoy your travels in Japan! If you have more specific questions about the pass or any other aspects of your trip, feel free to ask. Safe travels!
@@tokyocheapo Thanks a million for your speedy response and recommendation. Can’t wait to visit Japan! Last time I was there was in 1987. I was still so very young, there was almost no English existing in Japan. I’ve watched so many videos on Japan including yours, I especially love the one on ONSEN. Speaking of ONSEN, do you know any ONSEN in Arima, Osaka or Kyoto that would allow tattoo? I have a small one on my back hip. Again thanks so so much for everything!
That's so exciting! It'll be interesting to see how much has changed since the 80s. For onsen in Kyoto, two that are tattoo-friendly include Funaoka Onsen and Goko-yu Onsen. If the tattoo is small enough, other onsen might also allow you to cover it with a "seal" or plaster. Regarding the JR Pass, it can be more convenient to travel with the pass, especially if you're making a lot of trips on JR train lines but if you're purely looking for the cheapest option, purchasing single tickets for the shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka and then just using a rechargeable transport card like Suica for travel within cities is also an option. Hope your trip goes well! 😊
Hi I'm doing Tokyo, Fuji, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka in the span of 11 days. I'm assuming it would then make sense to get the JR pass? Flying to Haneda, back from Kansai
@@tokyocheapo Appreciate the reply! Thank you for sharing. Will go with the Suica option then:- th-cam.com/video/74mMXxvuh-g/w-d-xo.html Hopefully the weather is forgiving this September :)
Hi I'm planning a trip to Japan in October this year. My itinerary is Tokyo-Kyoto-Nara-Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima-Miyajima Island-Hiroshima-Tokyo. I was planning on getting a Whole Japan 7 day JR pass for my trip and activating it on the day I leave from Tokyo to Kyoto. This way it covers all my travel till I get back to Tokyo from Hiroshima. What do you think @tokyocheapo ? Do you think it's worth it ? Or should I just get individual tickets ? Please advice
I'm confused, some websites say that from Oct 2023 it's not possible to buy JR pass offline in Japan, I only can buy it online and wait for the delivery to my country. My trips is just in 5 days, so no chances for it to arrive. On Tokyo Cheapo website it's written that I CAN buy offline when arrived in Japan without online pre-booking. So as of April 2024, can I buy the JR pass offline after arrival in Japan without pre-booking?
Nice video ! I'm planning to visit Japan, if I want to do Tokyo-Kyoto, Kyoto-Osaka, then Osaka-Tokyo, it's better to take individual ticket than JR Pass or Regional Passes like hokuriku ?
Thank you for this! We are travelling for 3 weeks and I’m still hesitant about buying the JR pass or not! I’d love to hear your thoughts. Here’s our itinerary: Tokyo for 4 days Hakone for 2 days Kyoto for 3 days Koyasan for 2 days Osaka for 3 days Takamatsu(art islands) for 2 days Back to Tokyo for 3 days Thanks in advance
Google 'Japan Rail Pass Calculator' and you'll see several pages where you can test out the cost of your itinerary. I doubt if either the 14 or 21 day passes will give you value with this itinerary.
Ours is relatively similar so would love to know too for a trip in January Stressing about the price of the pass and if it’s better to just pay individually
We(me, my wife and 8 year old son) are traveling to Japan in Jan 2024. We start off in Osaka for 4 days, planning on a day trip to Kyoto from Osaka. We are then traveling to Mt Fuji to spend 2 days there, then onto Tokyo for 7 days and we plan on doing a day trip from Tokyo up north (Nagano) to one of the ski resorts. Would the JR pass be worth it for us then, we would purchase 14 day passes? Would be good to see a video or pointed in the right direction with regard to what “free attractions” are available with the JR pass as we are struggling to find this to ensure the pass is actually worth it?
A 14-day JR Pass could be a cost-effective option for your Japan trip itinerary. It can cover long-distance travel between cities like Osaka, Kyoto, Mt. Fuji, Tokyo, and Nagano. As for "free attractions" with the JR Pass, it typically covers JR-operated trains, buses, and even some ferries. You can use it to access iconic attractions like the Miyajima Island in Hiroshima or Nikko. You can check out our alternative options for JR Pass here: tokyocheapo.com/travel/transport/trains-are-not-the-only-vehicles-alternatives-to-the-rail-pass/
hi guys! I'm going to japan for the first time next march for 14 days, I'm planning to do tokyo-hiroshima-osaka-kyoto-nara-kyoto-tokyo (and maybe another daytrip from tokyo) do you think JR pass is worth it? If yes, the 14 days right? Thank you so much! Keep the good work 😊
I’m doing a 2 wk trip next month too. I ask ChatGPT to do a price comparison between JR pass and individual tickets for my itinerary & it breaks down pretty clearly, 14 day pass most likely not worth it.
Thank you for the guide from Tokyo to Mt Fuji.. what if after Fuji, we then plan to hit Universal in Osaka for a couple of days and then back to Tokyo? Seems the Wide passes don't quite capture all 3. All busses maybe?
You're welcome for the guide! If you plan to travel from Mt. Fuji to Osaka and then back to Tokyo, the Japan Rail Pass might be a more convenient option compared to regional passes. The Japan Rail Pass covers the Shinkansen (bullet train) between major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. For the leg between Mt. Fuji and Osaka, you can use the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. Once in Osaka, Universal Studios Japan is easily accessible. To return to Tokyo, you can again use the Shinkansen. Have a great trip!
Hey I will be travelling to Japan in November 2024 and my itinerary is like Shinjuku>Kawaguchiko and back then and the next day it will be Shinjuku>Kyoto>Osaka>Hiroshima>Miyajima. Can you please recommend if i should get the JR pass or not. Thank you for your help and your videos are really helpful for a first time traveller like me
So much info. I need advice. We are a family of 4 and will be traveling from Tokyo to Osaka, Nara, then Osaka to Kyoto. We might also be going to Hiroshima, and then back to Tokyo. Is the jr pass the best option or should i go with a regional pass? Ive done research and I'm not sure. Some regional passes don't cover certain areas or certain trains. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
7-day Japan Rail Pass $330 Shinkansen Tokyo → Shinosaka $96 Osaka →Kyoto→Shinosaka $40 Shinosaka → Hiroshima $66 Hiroshima → Tokyo $133 Total $335 If you are not going to Hiroshima, it is better not to buy 7-day Japan Rail Pass. There are many castles in Japan, but Himeji Castle is said to be the most beautiful. It's a good idea to stop off and visit when heading from Osaka to Hiroshima.

I'm planning to buy a JR Pass for 7 days to go from Tokyo to Hiroshima, than Osaka (+ half a day in Nara), Kyoto and back to Tokyo. Is it worth it to buy the JR Pass for this itinerary?, or should I buy tickets for every trip? Thank you for the advice :)
It’s a borderline case. You’ll have to add up the individual train fares to decide, try using Klook ticket booking to estimate the cost of each leg of your journey tokyocheapo.com/yt/klook-shinkansen
Hi I m travelling to japan for 7 days and i will go to only kyoto and osaka and headback to tokyo… does it makes sense to take the JR pass or should i opt for individual pass- pls let me know
I'm going from Tokyo > Kyoto > Nara > Kyoto > Takayama > Tokyo Please advise if i should get a 7days JR pass? Or any website recommended so i can calculate the cost?
The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) can be a cost-effective option for travelers covering multiple cities, especially if you plan to use the Shinkansen (bullet train) for long-distance travel. You can visit the website : www.japan-rail-pass.com Hope this helps!
Renting a car is great if you're travelling outside the major cities to countryside areas. If you're just hiring a car to travel between Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto etc. though, it's more convenient and cost-effective to fly or catch the shinkansen.
meh round trip from tokyo to osaka is already 200 and round from osaka to hiroshima is 150..not including kyoto, himeji, kobe, nara. how is that not worth it? id say 7 days pass is still worth it if u use it around and outside osaka
With so much to explore in Japan, it's almost too rushed to visit more than 2 (or even just 1!) major cities within a week unless you intended to do 1-/2-day excursions to utilize the JR Pass effectively. But even if that's the case, it's probably a better deal to take overnight bus to cover these many cities and save on hotel costs.
Shinkansen Nozomi and Mizuho bullet trains (reserved and non-reserved) will be included in the JR Pass from October 2023. You can view the details here: www.jrailpass.com/faq/nozomi-mizuho-shinkansen#:~:text=Shinkansen%20Nozomi%20and%20Mizuho%20bullet,purchase%20a%20special%20complementary%20ticket.
Are you basing individual tickets on the fastest Shinkansen, such as Nozomi on the Tokaido/Sanyo lines? If so the travel times would work. I am under the understanding the new Pass allows access to Nozomi, but you pay extra for it. Based on that fact, unless my plans are to travel frequently I don’t think the Pass is worth it any more as a cost saver. If all I want is convenience and the ability to book seats online early I might pay.
I am going to Japan in November from 1.11 until 17.11.24. So far I am looking at regional passes and domestic flight options but I really want to take JR green pass to experience trains as this will be my first trip to Japan. My itinerary is more or less complete (95% lol ) Tokyo 4 days Fuji 1day Nagano 1day Kanazawa 2 days Takayama 1 day Kyoto 2 days Hiroshima 1 day Osaka 1 day Between Osaka and Sapporo I would love to take a night sunrise express train (Osaka to Tokyo) then from Tokyo to Sapporo indulge myself in Gran Class 🚝 and from Sapporo ( 2 days) fly back to Tokyo and to Europe then. If I am not buying a JR pass I might change it from 14-15.11 to go to Okinawa with plane and from Okinawa to Sapporo then. I am torn between taking an green pass 7 days Jr pass taking 14 days of normal JR pass just to avoid hustle or just buying a regional passes which I saw they don’t include green cars. What do you think? Regards from Germany 😊
Hello there! Your Japan itinerary sounds fantastic! Considering your travel plans, a 7-day JR Green Pass might be a great fit, especially if you plan to take the Sunrise Express and indulge in Gran Class. It offers a convenient and comfortable way to explore multiple regions. Alternatively, regional passes could work well for specific areas. Keep in mind the JR Green Pass adds a touch of luxury to your train journeys. Whichever option you choose, enjoy your trip to Japan in November! Safe travels! 😊🗾🚅
@@tokyocheapo I just consider taking 7days green JR pass from Nagano on as I will use IC suica and other cards until I reach Nagano (big fan of slow train rides hah). One question though, probably is for the best to buy JR pass on official JR website as you can reserve the seats asap and you don’t have much hassle down the road while in Japan? Also how much in advance should I buy a JR pass if I am flying to Japan on 1.10.24? In July perhaps:) Thanks again for your feedback!
Hello! Considering the scenic route sounds like a great plan! Yes, buying the JR Pass from the official JR website allows early seat reservations, minimizing hassle. For a trip starting on October 1st, purchasing the JR Pass in July should provide ample time for processing. Safe travels and enjoy your journey! 😊🚄✈️ Here's a quick guide for you: tokyocheapo.com/travel/transport/the-complete-guide-to-japans-regional-rail-passes/
It's not worth it to do all that traveling. The pass just isn't worth it anymore. If you follow this video's guide, you're just gonna be drained from the constant travel, lugging around your luggage, checking in and out of hotels and AirBnB's and constantly getting lost. Instead, buy plane tickets to one city from your country. Explore around there, go to specialty shops, do your research and eat at amazing restaurants, pre-book shinkansen from ticket shops outside of the train station for discounts to different cities and towns, and then fly out of a different airport back to your country. You'll save a lot of money this way and your trip will be WAYYYYY more enjoyable.
S/O to your comment!! I changed my flight arrival from Tokyo to Osaka and will go up from there by train. I never thought about it that way but I now have an earlier flight & get to Osaka 7 hours before I originally planned. 🎉
I was using the JR Shinkansen from Kyoto, Nagoya, Tokyo in April May this year. What I witness in the train is all kinds of ruthless tourists, putting legs up, bags putting at pathway, talking loudly and some was even smoking outside of the smoking room. I was thinking to myself, JR is going to do something about this and true enough, price hiked.
@@chion918 You don't get it. They did this to get rid of all cheap low tourist that cannot afford it, those are the ones that misbehaved. And JR Pass is ONLY for tourist. The citizen ones are different.
We are planning go in February for 9 days and o am wondering if the 7 days jr pass is the right for us. We are planing to stay 2 days in Tokyo, then go to Kyoto, Hiroshima then back to Kyoto, Kyoto- Osaka and back to Kyoto. Them Kyoto - Tokyo, and Tokyo- narita airport we are also thinking of doing a day trip from Tokyo to mt Fuji. Do you think that the 7 days pass will be worth for our plan?
not worth it anymore, there are plenty of other options to save money; from buses, local trains, flights to ferries (plus specific discount for short trips like Nikko, Hakone, etc etc). Tokyo to Fukuoka to make your JR pass worth.... so you spend basically everyday travelling non stop, going at a really fast pace and moving your suitcase around. What about a video showcasing all different alternatives to JR pass? because let's face it, it's dead.
Money aside, is the JR pass worth it just for ease of traveling, not having to worrow about making other accommodations and getting last minute tickets somewhere?
It spends. But I would say most traveller's won't find it worthwhile. My 7 day trip ... still in Japan... include tokyo, kyoto, osaka, himeji. I traveled by shinkansen and still not able to use 50000 yen. So you will need to figure out hoq to use 50000 yen in 7 days. Also not every shinkanesn line accept the pass. Since most japanese speak little English, getting on the right train is a challenge.
In May I am going to spend 14 nights based in Tokyo. I have plans to visit Yokohama, Mount Fuji, Nara, use the subway everyday in Tokyo and go roundtrip 3 days to Kyoto (I have reservations to stay in the hotel only in Tokyo). Is worth it to get the JR Pass? By my calculations it might
Just ditch the pass, they are forcing you to waste time looking out at the window on the the Shinkansen. Going all the way to Kyushu from Tokyo just to cover the distance and make myself feel worth it is the last thing that I would do. Apparently domestic flight is way better. No doubt their trains are cool but no way Im gonna spend half a day in there.
I have used it many times next trip will fly and take local trains they are beautiful trains not as fast but fun to ride .I am done with pass not worth it
The BEST way to pay as you go in Japan the public train transportation it is easy every where don’t listen to this TH-cam video I am the one to listening to her and purchased 2 tickets it not worked for me when you return it you loose for the agent website you will pay fee for 25% pay at you go is the best with JRPass or even suica card at the airport a lot off helping people stand around at the kiosks help for purchase the tickets BEST BEST pay as you go that my experience last Feb 2024 🍁
I've been to Japan three times now and I've relied on Tokyo Cheapo every single time. You guys give such great advice, practical tips, and deals. I really appreciate all you do for us. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the lovely comment! Glad to hear you find our content useful 😊
Good to know! Thank you for the suggestion 😊
@tokyocheapo What is the best JR pass to get if you are wanting to go from Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima and Fukuoka and back to Tokyo?
Video about regional passes would be much appreciated 😊
One thing you didn't mention is, that the JR Pass is NOT valid as is on the Nozomi and Mizuho trains ( the most frequent and fastest ones ) and you need to buy extra tickets for these trains even with the JR Pass. For example Tokyo to Kyoto/Shin-Osaka is 4960¥ on top of the JR Pass on Nozomi train.
When I visited Japan in 2017, my itinerary went around Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo, with only 1 shinkansen tix and no JR Pass. Here's how I did it:
- I landed in Kansai airport in Osaka, and then got an ICOCA card which I used to hop on and off local trains and busses in every city I visited (around JPY 4-5k in total for 10 days)
- For Osaka - Kyoto trip I rode a local inter-city train (not JR) becuz both cities are close to each other.
- For Kyoto - Tokyo trip I rode a shinkansen (around JPY 12k for nozomi)
- I flew back home from Haneda airport in Tokyo.
More itineraries please!
Where can I get such a ticket?
My pick is the Hokuriku Arch pass for the same price but covers Tokyo as well
Thank you for this info. I did not know about these passes.
Where can I get this pass from please, I am trying to find the best way to get from KIX airport.
I am in Japan, we brought 7 days JR pass. We made break even, travelling from Tokyo to Osaka - Hiroshima - Osaka - Tokyo - Mt Fuji.
@@tokyocheapo wait, can you use that pass to Go from Tokyo to Nagano, Ski in Hakuba for 5 days then travel on to Kanazawa and down to Kyoto?
@@Valientee16 get the card and top up, buy bullet train ticket as necessary
Want to ask opinions. 13days in Japan…5days in Tokyo, 1 day hakone, 5 days Osaka, travel home. What is the best option!
What about if you go from Tokyo to various places in the Tohoku region? Would like to go to yhe fox village and some onsen
Hi there, thanks for this, it's very helpful. I have a question about the Hokuriku Arch Pass, I wanna do the route the pass is offering but starting from Osaka and not Tokyo. Is that possible? Please let me know, thank you
What pass would you recommend for Osaka-Kyoto-Kanazawa-Okayama-Kyoto-Tokyo-Yokohama-Fuji-Nikko-Tokyo
All this is spread over 9 days..thank you!
Just to clarify this will be my trip to Japan, is this a must or will I be able to buy individual tickets if I am going only to Osaka, Kyoto and back to Tokyo?
You will be able to buy single tickets 😊 We cover how to buy them in this video here: th-cam.com/video/IpSMSn0DzgA/w-d-xo.html
Hi @everyone
I have a query.
Awesome tips as ever! May I ask where do you get your backround music? What are they called?
Is the jr pass per person ???
Can I use the Jr East Tohoku pass in going to Nagano?
Is buying JR pass worth ? if I am planning to visit tokyo,mt fuji, osaka, kyoto ,nara and hiroshima ? please suggest
For the JR pass Is it possible to get it the same day you purchase it if you are already in Japan or it is not possible to get it that quick ?
Can i just use the pass to travel 24/7 in trains
Tried before for abt 5000KM travel with 7 day pass, I guess still can save >50% per new price compared to individual ticket.
Hi I'm doing Tokyo, Fuji, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka in the span of 11 days. I'm assuming it would then make sense to get the JR pass?
Flying to Haneda, back from Kansai
For that itinerary It would be cheaper to buy Shinkansen tickets

What are the options for buying individual tickets? Where can they be bought? Can they be bought the day of?
Hi there! We outline all the details for buying individual tickets in our video here: th-cam.com/video/IpSMSn0DzgA/w-d-xo.html 😊
Literally ordered mine the week before the price went up.
Nice video !
I'm planning to visit Japan, if I want to do Tokyo-Kyoto, Kyoto-Osaka, then Osaka-Tokyo, it's better to take individual ticket than JR Pass or Regional Passes like hokuriku ?
Hi there! Yes for this route it's best to just go with individual tickets 😊
Thank you for this! We are travelling for 3 weeks and I’m still hesitant about buying the JR pass or not! I’d love to hear your thoughts. Here’s our itinerary:
Tokyo for 4 days
Hakone for 2 days
Kyoto for 3 days
Koyasan for 2 days
Osaka for 3 days
Takamatsu(art islands) for 2 days
Back to Tokyo for 3 days
Thanks in advance
Google 'Japan Rail Pass Calculator' and you'll see several pages where you can test out the cost of your itinerary. I doubt if either the 14 or 21 day passes will give you value with this itinerary.
Ours is relatively similar so would love to know too for a trip in January
Stressing about the price of the pass and if it’s better to just pay individually
Did you buy a JR pass or did you do individual journeys? Thanks
The arch pass sounds best for me, even if I don’t want to take the arch both ways.
You can check out our alternative options for JR Pass here:

It would be more cost effective to buy separate tickets along the journey
@@tokyocheapo Thanks, not sure if JRP is worth the price though for the 4 of us.. pretty steep. Might just price out separate tickets.
Yes if you're looking for the cheapest option for a family of four, individual tickets would be the way to go!
But the Jr pass doesn't include the Nozomi right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
7-day Japan Rail Pass $330 Shinkansen Tokyo → Shinosaka $96 Osaka →Kyoto→Shinosaka $40 Shinosaka → Hiroshima $66
Hiroshima → Tokyo $133 Total $335 If you are not going to Hiroshima, it is better not to buy 7-day Japan Rail Pass.

I'm going from Tokyo > Kyoto > Nara > Kyoto > Takayama > Tokyo
Please advise if i should get a 7days JR pass? Or any website recommended so i can calculate the cost?
The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) can be a cost-effective option for travelers covering multiple cities, especially if you plan to use the Shinkansen (bullet train) for long-distance travel.
You can visit the website : www.japan-rail-pass.com
Hope this helps!
Thank you. How about rent a car for 4 people?
Yes while not as comfortable, highway buses are a great option for saving money 😊
So is the Nozomi Shinkansen line INCLUDED with the 21-day ($1028AUD) pass? If not there's no way im gonna be using it when I go in Jan-Feb 2024
Hi there! Yes the individual tickets are based on prices for the Nozomi.
I am going to Japan in November from 1.11 until 17.11.24. So far I am looking at regional passes and domestic flight options but I really want to take JR green pass to experience trains as this will be my first trip to Japan.
My itinerary is more or less complete (95% lol )
Tokyo 4 days
Fuji 1day
Nagano 1day
Kanazawa 2 days
Takayama 1 day
Kyoto 2 days
Hiroshima 1 day
Osaka 1 day
Between Osaka and Sapporo I would love to take a night sunrise express train (Osaka to Tokyo) then from Tokyo to Sapporo indulge myself in Gran Class 🚝 and from Sapporo ( 2 days) fly back to Tokyo and to Europe then.
In July perhaps:)
Thanks again for your feedback!
Here's a quick guide for you:
tokyocheapo.com/travel/transport/the-complete-guide-to-japans-regional-rail-passes/
Yep gonna do this flying to Osako and going back again from Tokyo. JR pass is just too expensive and in only visiting 3 cities. Osako, Kyoto and Tokyo
@@LimitedGif do you recommend doing individual tickets or regional pass for that 3 city trip
Why would they jack it up. Asian thought process at work.
I agree. Osaka is big enough and close by enough trains its a no brianer.
I was thinking to myself, JR is going to do something about this and true enough, price hiked.
price hike penalizes all travellers, not the rude and unmannered travellers you spoke of. therefore, JR didn't do anything.
@@chion918 You don't get it. They did this to get rid of all cheap low tourist that cannot afford it, those are the ones that misbehaved. And JR Pass is ONLY for tourist. The citizen ones are different.

Hi… have a trip coming up from 12th to the 22nd of November. Plan to travel Tokyo-Fukuoka-Kyoto-Osaka-Nara-Fuji-Tokyo… good a deal for the JR pass?
Those new prices are a joke.
Do you think I need to go to Tokyo first then Kyoto then lastly Osaka?
The only ones getting the new price is the foreign Toritetsu and basically anyone who views the trains as the main attraction haha
I guess for my trip it is not worth it as I am travelling to Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto- Nara
Not worth it to me. This trip I’m only wanting to do Osaka and Tokyo it’s cheaper to fly to Osaka
I'm literally doing the same thing. Flying on a domestic from hnd to itm and it's much cheaper than the JR pass
not worth it anymore, there are plenty of other options to save money; from buses, local trains, flights to ferries (plus specific discount for short trips like Nikko, Hakone, etc etc).
By my calculations it might
How about Tokyo to Osaka?
Just ditch the pass, they are forcing you to waste time looking out at the window on the the Shinkansen.
Going all the way to Kyushu from Tokyo just to cover the distance and make myself feel worth it is the last thing that I would do. Apparently domestic flight is way better.
No doubt their trains are cool but no way Im gonna spend half a day in there.
I have used it many times next trip will fly and take local trains they are beautiful trains not as fast but fun to ride .I am done with pass not worth it
No
