    Be careful if you take one apart, take a screwdriver and short across the capacitors. One of my co-workers was working on a microwave and got a shock from one of the capacitors. he was standing up at the time, the force threw him backwards and up agaisnt the wall of our shop. He was stunned but otherwise not hurt, it scared the heck out of me.

    wow, i've been in the hospital 4 different times in the last 3 years, for 10-12 weeks each time. The doctors keep telling me I have pneumonia, but they can't understand why i keep getting it. I think it's probably berrilium poisoning or whatever after watching this video. i used to take microwaves apart and microwave the magnetrons in good microwaves, put cans around them to direct the microwaves, then when i was done with them i would smash the vacuums/magnetrons with hammers; i never knew about this berrileyitis thing. fuck, i wish somebody would have stoped me. i have to run this by my doc next week.

    Hey there! You seem like a rather clever fellow but I assure you there are many who are not as clever as you. The blurb you had on that HV capacitor was a little short (no pun intended) imho. Those caps can blow off your hand with the amount of energy stored in them; dangerous is an absolute understatement, utterly lethal is the truth. These devices should be disassembled wearing a surgical mask, some rubber gloves and some good rubber on your feat, athletic shoes should suffice. $10 of equipment can easily save you from serious and potentially fatal injury.
    Get that magnetron working and irradiate some stuff!

    • @brig.4398
      @brig.4398 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the only danger is those caps, I always short them, one time my partner got a shock off one, it threw him back up agaisnt the wall of our shop. it really scard me, he was stunned but not hurt. but you're right those caps are very dangerous.

    WARNING THIS IS DANGEROUS however to discharge a cap use a screw driver with a good insulating handle, attach a high value resistor many K ohms and rated for lots of current as well near the end with its leads bent in a U shape on ly one lead should touch the screwdruve though preferably neither of them do ... use this arangement to short the cap with the resistor, WARNING THIS IS STILL DANGEROUS

      EcProjects Pull it apart - the magnets are quite strong, and make interesting fridge magnets. You get two of them in each magnetron. Do not attempt to fire the magnetron outside of the oven - its quite dangerous.

    • @zvikaraviv
      @zvikaraviv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Magnets (there are two in each Magnetron and always the same) are very strong and very useful for lot of 'toys'

    • @stoatrepublic
      @stoatrepublic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Magnetron is a Valve, it produces Mircrowaves at 2.4Ghz its actually a Silent Weapon for a Quite War and is very dangerous when operated or taken apart. It works on same frequency range as Wifi and is designed to Fuck you up Wholesale, don't take chances messing with that shit. Leave it to people who know what they are doing, for example Licensed Amateur Radio Technicians, Electronics Engineers or like minded people who are aware of Radio Frequency and high voltages. There is all so a lot of very sharp edges in those enclosures.

    Modern microwaves do not contain high voltage capacitor or bulky transformers

    • @stephensnell1379
      @stephensnell1379 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bulky transformer will more than likely exist in all microwave ovens as it's required to step the voltage up from 240 volts up to over 2,000 volts

  • @MrMonkeybat
    @MrMonkeybat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    5:50 You say there is a lower voltage winding on the for the heater on the cathode. But the Magnetron only has two contacts, is there something I am missing here or would hot cathode require more contacts for the heater and that's a cold cathode?

    • @josugambee3701
      @josugambee3701 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The filliment winding is connected to the high voltage at 4000 volts (after the voltage doubler formed by the diode and cap). So, you have 4000 volts, and also 4003 volts. These two voltages connect to the magnetron filliment. The filliment is at a very high voltage relative to ground, but there is a small voltage *across* the filliment. This means it is at a high voltage while still being heated by the small voltage difference across it.

    • @oblivionshadow9453
      @oblivionshadow9453 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would highly advise against making a microwave. Setting all safety issues with high voltage and other lethal hazards aside, attempting to make a microwave from scratch and heat up food like regular microwave is extremely difficult. One of my close friends who specialized in Microwaves (electrical engineer) was talking about how if it doesn't perfectly resonate (probably not the right word) with water, it won't heat up the water (it's the water in the food which gets heated). The frequency range that you must hit is actually quite small and would be difficult to achieve without the correct equipment.
