LOL Congrats! While you boys did the Iron Butt, I did the Ice Butt, meaning, while my black beauty Indian Springfield lay parked and covered in my garage, I was busy shovelling snow and de-icing 4 vehicles on my driveway. These videos keep me sane until April...keep them coming LOL -Thanks !
Good stuff, and a lot of wise counsel that can be shared taking long road trips with guys you’ve not had a lot of riding with. They say you never really know someone until your travel with them... ill go one step further “riding” with them. 1) No whining, crying how numb your butt is, how stiff your back is, how many bugs you got hit by. Shut up and ride or stay home. 2) We leave each day, early in the mornings, so we get a lot of ground covered, and finish up before dark. If you’re late, you get left behind,so you’ll have to ride your a** off to catch up. You’ll be on time next time. 3) no matter the time of year, you pack thermals. 4) We fill up our tanks at the end of each day riding, so we aren’t getting all our gear on in the morning, then ride a block away, stop, and fill up our tanks. Big pet peeve, fill up the night before. 5) pound water all day, every day whether you’re thirsty or not. Staying hydrated helps you endure the entire trip well. 6) if you need to check your phone at every stop, or text your wife or girlfriend at every stop, or return calls, or call work at every stop, stay home. Set the expectation before you leave. This is a boys trip. When you get to your final destination each day, make a quick call to the wife, while your buddy is in the shower before heading out to dinner and drinks. Then when you climb into the shower, your buddy gets his call to the wife handled. Save all the stories, photos, and mass detail until you get home, then you have lots to share. Then you guys go out and have a great guys night out each night, uninterrupted from calls back home. 7) travel light. 8) Ride together, staggered formation, don’t be passing each other to show each other how cool you look. 9) Eat light until you’re finished for the day so you don’t get sleepy. 10) don’t b*tch about the weather. If you ride and I mean really ride, you’re gonna get weather of all kinds. If you can’t endure, stay home and help with the laundry.
I did my first Saddlesore 1000 on one of the longest days in June 2001. The middle of June is the most popular time for an SS1K. It was a loop through MO-AR-OK-MO. Took 18.5 hours. Riding buddy was a former long-haul trucker who intimately knew all the roads we took. I did my second SS1K in September 2002, with 5 other riders, from NYC to STL. Again, about 18.5 hours. The weather was great. Warm enough that after a while we quit putting on rain gear every time it started raining. We got wet for a while, then air-dried for a while.
Congratulations!!!! The SS1000 is definitely a challenge! Myself and 5 others completed the ss1000 in August 2019....left Knoxville, TN area, rode through Chattanooga, Birmingham and Mobile before reaching our mid point just east of Biloxi, MS and back. 1045 miles in 16.5 hrs. Other than fuel stops, we stopped at Mobile Harley-Davidson and grabbed lunch at the mid point fuel stop!!
Same here in germany. This morning it was 30°F, frozen car windows and salted roads. So everything around 50°F or higher would a pleasure. BTW : Florabama is cool - been there in 2017.
Tony, As a former Ohio rider, and now S. Florida rider, I can tell you that your blood does change according to where you live. If I were to do those rides, I would freeze more than he did. On the other hand, were you to come down here in August, and try to do A1A with any king of traffic, you would overheat far faster than we would. It's all relative bro.
Agreed. I ride in Colorado (Colorado Springs area) at altitudes of 6000 - 7000 feet commuting. Sportster, no wind screen, no heated grips. Of course my commute is only 16 miles each way. ;-) Mid 40s is a no-brainer, of course I'm riding, 50s? Heck, better bring the lighter gear in a backpack for the ride home... Of course my next bike will have wind protection and heated grips because the 30s start to get miserable. Great video though. When I do get a bigger touring or sport-touring machine I'll probably go for it on an IB ride.
I have completed five iron butts from 1995 to 2000. Didn't complete 1996 due to engine problems. I did mine in the state of Iowa and each year we started at 10:00 am and completed anywhere from 18 to 23 hours later. Always seemed to run into a lot of rain, as Iowa in June seems to have a lot of thunder storms at night. Coldest one was June 28, low forties all night long. Last one was Y2k.
Well done!!! I aim to do the challenge when restrictions are lifted. Definitely take your advice on hydration and dressing for the climate. I wear long johns 70 percent of the year here in cold UK
Thanks Robert! We’re in FL so we don’t have restrictions. Check out my video on the Bun Burner Gold ride I did last May, during COVID. It’s a 2 part series
Hydrate hydrate hydrate...mantra for the field, mantra for riding bike for hours at a time. Learned both the hard way and now wear a hydration pack. No regrets.
Congratulations! Ironbutts are handy when I need to bank time and jumpstart my west trips , done a few certified and undocumented, even a certified BBG 1500 (1500 miles in less than 24 hours once) Hardest thing I ever loved.
I remember someone asking why one would do such a thing on a motorcycle, "it didn't seem like fun." Um, it's practical buddy. If I need to do a bunch of riding where i'm going and I don't have a motorcycle there, then I can haul arse there on my bike and save my vacation time. If I can get to Phoenix within 24 hours from Dallas, I can get to Los Angeles the next day, then Kings, Sequoia, Joshua Tree national parks are all within a days ride of where i'd be based in LA. It's not rocket science.
You did it! Kudos, and welcome aboard! You look baked at the end of the vid, lol. What helped me get mine, in addition to lots of water, is prayers and Five Hour Energys - sip a little each gas stop. A bag of cashews and a beef jerky is a good snack you can munch on the road too. And I will echo; THIS IS NO TIME FOR ALCOHOL or other “substances.”. Wait until you get there...
Awesome video, but yes, like you mentioned in one of your #'s was to take more video, you went from your second stop to all the way to Alabama. LOL , I would like to do this but would like more intel for sure. I saw one guy that said to drink at least 10oz an hour and yep, should be going to the bathroom each stop. I drink water all day long so I know how important that part is. It would be great to know each step of how to do this. Documentation and average speeds, etc. Also, planning gas stops would be helpful too. I finally read what happened in Jacksonville and the shady place you stopped. LOL, I remember my dad doing that in St. Louis just like Vacation with Chevy Chase, we were in the wrong part of town at night and my dad was going nuts because mom couldn't figure out the map, We kids just stayed hunkered down in the back seat. LOL. Also, it does appear that checking temps would have be great too. Of course living in Oklahoma I ride most days to work in the 20's and 30's with highs in the 50-60's so for me its great weather but I also have a RM so I have lowers to keep the wind off my legs, and I wear leathers and a full face helmet too. But I know you sun birds freeze if it gets down to the 60's LOL,, Also, the other intel would be what roads you do it on. Looks like all interstate? Love your vids and your humor too. I'm sure its not for the faint of heart at all. I've done about 750 in less than 24 but that was a lot of stops and dinner breaks too. so I'm sure its attainable. Once again, Congrats on the bucket list check off.
I enjoy watching your videos. You seem like a good guy. I got an Indian Springfield in December 2020. Was really confident till I got on it and realized after 20 years of not riding there were a few things my muscles forgot. Catching on slowly. Gonna take a class this spring 2021 just to get some pinpointed refreshers. So far I've looked at 2 of your Iron Butt videos. It seems like you ride with some uptight guys. Maybe that's just me but some sure do bust your balls like you held a gun to there head to make them come along! Like your responsible for there screw ups! I guess good friends can do that. Guys I work with give me shit also. Lol! Enjoy your videos! Ride safe!
Thanks buddy! Yeah LOL Joe is a unique breed but he has a good heart, at least I’m mostly sure of that 🤣 thanks for watching and thank you for the kind words. It really means a lot.
WoW! Respect, well done Bryan! Thousand miles is here in Germany almost completely through Germany from north to south and back (airline is here a about 1088 miles back and forth). You should have changed the Springfield seat. It's good for long distances, but not for super long distances like the Iron Butt I believe. Regards from a Springfield Rider. I like your Videos a lot!
Congratulations, great job. My first Saddle Sore 1000 was 1039 miles also in 18 hours (15.5 hrs moving, 2.5 eating and resting) with no issues. Best advice to someone planning challenge is 1) dress in layers as temps will change; 2) drink more water than you think you need; 3) Full face helmet. This cuts down on wind fatigue; 4) Drink some more water; 5) pick an "easy" route for your first try (freeway, either one way or out and back). Leave the complicated routes for later attempts.
TwoIndians I’m definitely going to do a lot of research before I head out on it. I wouldn’t want to mess something up. I can sympathize with your feelings about a stock seat. I rode from Arkansas to Daytona Beach, Florida a couple years ago for Biketoberfest. I couldn’t wait to get home and off the bike. I love my Saddlemen seat that I have now.
I did my first IronButt SS1000 last fall, Oct. 1. When I passed thru Memphis, it was over 100. I should've finished in 16 hours, and it was closer to 20 hours since I had to stop and cool off so much.
@@TwoIndians 3 IMRG's (actually more than 3, but starting from 3 cities) are participating in an Iron Butt ride as a fund raiser for operation: Homefront. We were supposed to do it on May 2. Now pushed back to August. Doing an approved group ride makes the registration process a bit less tedious. 3 groups leaving at the same time from Knoxville, TN, Charleston, SC, and Marietta, GA, all running the same route (not all in the same direction). It's in August so it'll be warm. Info here. Spread the word for us! sites.google.com/view/charityironbuttrides/home
Great video, the closest I’ve come to an IronButt is around 850-ish. I rode from just South of Daytona to just North of Washington DC (to visit my father) in about 16 hours. There was a stop for dinner near Fayetteville NC to visit a fellow biker/cousin. Did it on my last bike, a Softail Slim New subscriber
Cold? Wet? That's what a 24hr Walmart is for. Get in, buy cheap change of clothes (wet) or buy some wind resistant layers (cold.) Long johns keep you warm but not against the windchill a motorcycle ride can generate. I use a cheap pair of tracksuit bottoms I got at Target just for cooler days. My jacket is usually wind resistant enough. My tips; Leave very early in the morning. If you leave at 4am and stop for breakfast at 10, you've still got all day to ride and you've already got 6 hours behind you. Ibuprofen. Take it before you need it. Hydrate with water, and eat salty snacks to replenish your sweat. Cruise control or a throttle lock. Mandatory. Get as comfortable as you can. Ear plugs. Sunglasses. Music. Warmer gloves. Extra socks. Etc. Have a routine for your gas/ bio stops. Keep snacks on your bike or in your jacket pocket. Jerky/ biltong. Granola bars. hard candy. etc Be prepared to bail out if you need to.
I've been wanting to do one for years, I think I'll probably be in a good spot to try one in 2021. I have a long trip planned for 2020 but sadly it comes up a few hundred miles short of an Iron Butt. It'll be a great practice trip though for sure.
@@TwoIndians Gotta wait for the good season. I did 1660 miles in 48 hours in May for a funeral, determined I needed some serious upgrades if I was gonna do 1k in under 24 hours, I struggled to get 850 in 16. I ride daily as I no longer have a car so I get plenty of miles on my ride.
Thanks for taking us along on your ride. Done several 1000+ rides in a day during our trips, but none were official IBA runs. I've read the rules for documentation and was wondering if they accepted your doc and did you find it required extra time or challenge to comply? Now that I'm retired, looking to complete the "Four Corners" IBA ride once my Brother is retired so we have 21 days (or less) to achieve.
Great job! I don’t think I could do that especially if I was sick. Although I bet the weather was awesome. At least it was hot and humid the whole time. So how does it work? Do you send ur recipes to these people and they give you a certificate for this or something?
@Mod Zozer yes my guess is you're right. I have been looking for a sissy bar. When I bought her from a friend it's got a full detachable windshield, though I havent tried it with my new risers and drag bars. :)
Did the iron butt 1048 miles Columbus, Indiana to Mackinaw city, Michigan and back. Did it for myself. Along with the 2019 bring it Home Parade. Paris , Texas.. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
LoL 52degs cold as crap . Yep yall some Florida boys . 42 degs be great riding weather. Yeah I want to do it . But like you said finding some to do it with .
Check in to Hoagy's hero's. They do yearly rides for charity and help you with the paper work. You will definitely find a like minded rider to pair up with on a preapproved route.
Hoping to do my 1st Iron Butt from Colorado, apx 15 days (April 2nd 2020) Coronvirus has everybody shut in & locked down. Great way to practice social distancing, and clear the mind of what's happening in our world, stay safe everybody ;-)
@@mattshaggs2931 So matt how many motorcycle mileage challenges would you do? I read on google that there are several. Is the iron butt a first ? And would you do more?
Great video and one important thing, dress more than you think you have to. My first SaddleSore ride was 1600km and did it in 18.5 hours but forgot to take pictures during the ride and my turn around place at a McDonald restaurant I didn't take the receipt, that was a month ago. Last week, I did my 2000km SaddleSore ride and lost my camera on the way back and had no proof of when the ride started. That took me 21.5 hours. Two important things, we stay in the wind constantly for many long hours and our body is not used to it, and, lots of gas stations are not open 24 hours a day and when we're low on gas and all the places are closed, it is not funny and this is one thing to check when making a route.
Interesting perspective. Hydrating and research really does make a huge different in these kinds of long hauls. Lol glad my long haul buddy was in a little better mood than yours seemed to be.
I have to disagree with you on drinking a lot of water. I did the saddle sore 1000 today and it was hot. 93 degrees and in the 17 hour ride I went to the bathroom once. Drink so you are sweating but don't drink so much it's wasted in bathroom stops.
It’s not a race and you have a lot of time with a SS1000. Staying hydrated is very important, I couldn’t drink enough water and when I got home I felt a sponge in the desert.
1000ml is 1600klms is Australia do you guys have random animals coming out onto the highway at.moght and early morning. In Australia the kangaroos are horrendous in the country you generally down do before 8am or after 5pm. Well done on your efforts.
Willy's Performance Cycle Center, Since 1969 Seams usually cause sore spots, most figure it out at the 650 mile range. Some more , some less but in my experience average is 650 seams get to you. A wicking type underwear is a better choice than cotton. A fresh change of socks , believe it or not is great to have. Water, no soda, drink a gallon the 24 hours before hand and no less than 10oz an hour. People don’t realize how much they lose because riding evaporates their sweat fast enough they don’t see it.
I did 1200 on a triumph 800. It messed me up for 2 days. I had to piss during the the hour, got to the stall, dick in hand and I smashed my face into the tile. Something went very wrong with my equalibrium.
No extra clothes in the saddle bag hmmm, you can tell they never rode New York, dress real warm when you leave put on more clothes in the middle of the ride, and don't forget the snowmobile mittens.
By the way.... subscribe to our brother... Jersey Nick Moto....great guy who loves our community, rides all the time, vlogs great content, just a great all around brother... Jersey Nick Moto....
Avoid major cities, always take the bypass, plan the trip during high pressure to avoid rain. Don’t do it on a holiday or other high traffic time. Having two different foot positions possibilities will help. Wear pants without rear pockets or heavy seams, and definitely don’t put wallet in rear pocket. If you group ride, give the next rider plenty of room, don’t take novice riders, or bikes in poor condition. Don’t take passengers. Establish partnerships and know that other than your partner, the group will ride on without you if the is a problem. Loud pipes will get an honorary position in the rear of the group. Riding near large trucks is dangerous, but somewhat predictable, driving near cars is dangerous and unpredictable.
Yeah roger that. I just did my normal cup of coffee so i wouldnt get a caffiene headache. I will tell you however that I drnak my fist RedBulls on my BBG ride (also on our channel, two parts) and that was a life saver. It wasnt so much the caffiene but the vitamin B energy boost was on point. Thanks for watching!
@@TwoIndians I highly recommend 5 Hour Energy instead. All the vitamin B, but not the caffeine crash of Red Bull. I would sip on them every gas/pee/stretch stop. Went through two or three this way when I got my IBRA cert. Gotta remember to snack on some calories with any of that stuff, especially with vitamin B in it. A bottle of water, and we’re all set.
The riding buddy who is such a wuss doesn't have an actual windscreen. That leaves the rider with way more noise, far worse chill factor, and greater fatigue.

I should've finished in 16 hours, and it was closer to 20 hours since I had to stop and cool off so much.
yeah, Ive limited my Iron BUtt rides (so far) to cooler, more moderate temperatures. Thanks for watching!
Info here. Spread the word for us! sites.google.com/view/charityironbuttrides/home
killer tips, great content. thanks!
Fun video!! I did one for the first time in September.. I also put it on my TH-cam channel.. I like how you did this!!
@@TwoIndians th-cam.com/video/Ia43zWvLXZg/w-d-xo.html
Great video, the closest I’ve come to an IronButt is around 850-ish. I rode from just South of Daytona to just North of Washington DC (to visit my father) in about 16 hours.
There was a stop for dinner near Fayetteville NC to visit a fellow biker/cousin. Did it on my last bike, a Softail Slim

@@TwoIndians Will do !
Great video Brian.
Awesome job.. great video.
Congratulations!!
Cold?
My tips;
Leave very early in the morning.
Granola bars. hard candy. etc
Be prepared to bail out if you need to.
Great advise
I’m a Harley man (UL) have to say .......loving ya channel 👍
Awesome! Tell your friends!
Michigan to tampa florida on my 60th birthday !!!
Good stuff homie glad you guys had a good run, I want to do one, hopefully soon. Thanks for the video,
Thanks for taking us along on your ride.
Now try the Bun Burner Gold...1500 miles in less than 24 hours!
The most miles I've done so far was about 1350 miles in 1 day.
Do a bun burner first, maybe a silver to see if it’s attainable for you. A guy can stop sleep for an hour and still get saddlesore done.
Great job fellas!
Great job! I don’t think I could do that especially if I was sick. Although I bet the weather was awesome. At least it was hot and humid the whole time. So how does it work? Do you send ur recipes to these people and they give you a certificate for this or something?
TwoIndians oh okay. I was thinking it was on specific dates with a shit ton of people riding the same route
You get a certificate and a license plate frame.
Congrats guys! Pretty cool. I want to do this, but I'm going to need a bigger bike. My Lowrider just isnt big enough.
@Mod Zozer yes my guess is you're right. I have been looking for a sissy bar. When I bought her from a friend it's got a full detachable windshield, though I havent tried it with my new risers and drag bars. :)
@Mod Zozer already have forwards on mine. (Instgram nbt4sdad)
Did the iron butt 1048 miles Columbus, Indiana to Mackinaw city, Michigan and back. Did it for myself. Along with the 2019 bring it Home Parade. Paris , Texas.. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I've done two SS1000 and a BB1500. I need to get a bike with better range to make the BBG1500. IBA is fun, though I've only done solo rides.
Man I love that Chieftain Dark Horse.
Very cool!
Great video. 🤔 did you miss #8?
maybe, LOL, i was exhausted...
Thanks for the good video! #10 is my favorite!!
By the way, I have to drive more than 500 miles to hit a beach:(
I would prolly have to do back to back iron butts!
@@wilsonnichols7088 cool man
Nice video. I'll be uploading a video that includes my Bun Burner 1500 Silver, soon.
At least you got some nice Indians to do your frist, mine was an 85 Madura.
You think that's cold. Come on up to Minnesota. 40s in rain and wind now that's cold .
18 hours not bad for all the hold ups good job guy's
Hoping to do my 1st Iron Butt from Colorado, apx 15 days (April 2nd 2020) Coronvirus has everybody shut in & locked down. Great way to practice social distancing, and clear the mind of what's happening in our world, stay safe everybody ;-)
Good lessons
Great video! I hoping one day to do one myself. Can you do the iron butt on a sport tourer?
@@TwoIndians That's cool thank you. Ride safe! 💝
Great job. Did you ever get so fatigued that you wanted to drift off while riding? Energy Drinks?
Great job! What type of 3/4 helmet are you wearing?
That’s an Indian helmet.did you see the other Iron Butt videos?
I am actually watching them now. In the middle of your Orlando Evening Scenic Ride. I want to start recording my rides... Great work!
Thank you so much!
I still need to do one on my new bike.... although I am thinking about bbg1500 and/or lap of florida insanity. ^_^
Cold at 46 degrees. Are you kidding me? That's a summer day in Michigan.
That was about a 56 mph average, with all the stops that's very good time,
I didn't know this was "a thing". I've done alot of 1000 mile trips in a rush. No recognition required.
"No recognition required" except when on TH-cam I guess? If it wasn't required...you wouldn't have posted the comment...
@@mattshaggs2931 So matt how many motorcycle mileage challenges would you do? I read on google that there are several. Is the iron butt a first ? And would you do more?
Nice job guys...
My days of 800-1200 mi days are done as the fatigue at times makes it dangerous & no longer fun. All the best to you dudes though.
We all have to remember it is supposed to be fun
Awesome!
Most I’ve done is 806 miles. I slept like a baby when I got home. A friend of mine did 1500 in 24hrs. He said he was hallucinating the final 300 lol.
Does the final 300 miles count then?? Just kidding.
Yeah, extra clothes is def key. Check out my other Iron Butt ride videos too
67 and he says its cold outside....🤣🤣🤣🤣typical southerners...bwahahaha...nice ride...congratulations
Interesting perspective. Hydrating and research really does make a huge different in these kinds of long hauls.
Lol glad my long haul buddy was in a little better mood than yours seemed to be.
My advice. Bring Tylenol. Make sure bike has really soft seat. Pace yourself...it’s much more challenging than you think.
Nice
Coose bay Oregon to cabo San Lucas back
I have to disagree with you on drinking a lot of water.
Seams suck, doesn’t matter if it’s pockets on jeans or stitching in gloves. Get rid of the seams and you will be thankful.
Drink 10oz an hour, if you stop and don’t have to pee, you are not drinking enough. Veteran IBA guy here
I forgot congrats , hope Michael lets you in the club. ✌️
@dooman700.... The seams in the gloves ‘seem’ to bother me the most! My thumb eventually gets numb!
TwoIndians Michael Kneebone, IBA president
Willy's Performance Cycle Center, Since 1969
Seams usually cause sore spots, most figure it out at the 650 mile range.
Did it before they gave you a patch
Oh and on a 1200 sporster 99
I wish it was a balmy 42...Im in ohio lol
👍
2 back surgery's here so that's never going to be on my bucket list!
I still avg 10k a year on my ultra classic but thats a whole lot of 100 mile days back roads in Appalachia.
Brian, I like the other Indian (Barbara) far better than this whiner. I always learn something watching you vids. Again, good job bro.
No drugs (very little caffeine and nicotine), no alcohol. Disobey and you will not make it.
Just stop at a fuckin Walmart and buy a pair of long johns
The riding buddy who is such a wuss doesn't have an actual windscreen. That leaves the rider with way more noise, far worse chill factor, and greater fatigue.
They’re jokes MC505, it’s a video. Entertainment. Stop being such a critical hang nail and move on with your life.
