Outstanding! So nice to get to know more about you.
I served as 95B in the Army, 85 to (MP)
My gear is also ALICE, still works and it's what I'm familiar with. I also blend military clothing with woodsman clothing, it's very comfortable and I like to think of it as not tacticool, but Practicool.
Thanks for the closer look at a man I have come to respect and have learned so much from. It would be my honor to meet you some day. If you ever come to NC you have a place here to hang your hat.
Thanks again for all you do.

One of the few channels I can even stomach anymore. Honest, humble, non egocentric unlike all the other in your face crap. You actually present critical thinking and not my way or the highway nonsense. Thank you for your service and the time you take out of your life to create these outstanding content rich videos. 👍

"Do you even have hair" ROFL... that's hysterical.
I know this is an old video, but I wanted to say, thanks sincerely for making these videos. I don't need your credentials, or your background, i can see for myself your methods work, and that's what's important. I never had this kind of training growing up, and more and more I think it's going to be needed. I appreciate your service, your time, and your instruction. Thank you sir.

You are one of my go to bushcrafters/survivalists when it comes to learning new skills. Thank you for your service. My life was also disrupted by 9/11. I missed the chance to be there when my first son was born. I was Navy and don’t really feel like I deserve people’s thanks when they find out that I served. I was sitting safely out on the water, no land in sight, watching the fighters take off loaded up and coming back empty to get loaded up again. It was just a job to me, but one I was proud to have for 4 years.

I have no reason to question your abilities or credentials. The information and training that you present is clear concise and straightforward. No matter what your background or where you learned what you know, you are an excellent instructor.
Thank you for your sharing your knowledge and experience. Many people can not either afford or can not take the time away from their work and families to take the course you took.
If the sharing of your knowledge and skills saves one persons life, you have done well.
In addition your parents spelled Shawn correctly.

As you say, the skill-sets which each of us aquire are those which best suit our own needs, and seeing how different people do things allow us to tailor and fine-tune those skills. Thank you & keep 'em coming!

  • @MichaelVelders

Wow! That's so cool, Shawn. I just recently said almost the exact same thing. If you think about it, life is just a series of problems, you solve one to move on to the next one, and it's how you react and respond to those problems that define you as a human being. The older I get, the less stressed I get. You just solve the problem you're facing and move on to the next. Of course there's relaxing in there too, but... great philosophy. Love your videos!

I'm a 20 year old who recently found your videos. My dad joined the US army when he was 18, but unfortunately split with my mom when they were 26, and 27. Watching these videos makes me miss him, and I would say you seem like such a good dad, a part of me watches to see what a hardy, honest man is like. You're like a paternal figure to me. Thank you for your realistic answers and hard work on these videos. It is a great resource tool

Corporal Kelly ~ This was an interesting discussion and mission statement. I appreciate you screening the comments. I absolutely hate encountering the dispensers of hate as it upsets the tone of the atmosphere you are trying to create. We don't need that. For me, your background and credentials were interesting, but not essential. I spent 26 years on active duty in the Coast Guard and I appreciate your military training background: 1) to the point, 2) no BS, and 3) entirely actionable information. If somebody were to ask me for recommendations on where to start, my first choices would be your channel and Dave Canterbury's channel. Both for the same reason. The proof is in the performance, not the credentials. I love your style and your presentation and I would be proud to call you shipmate. Keep up the good work and your constant battle with the knuckleheads at Google.

Shawn, I don't know when this footage was recorded but I very much liked your comments. I was in the US Army for 15 years, I was a Army Ranger and Ranger instructor and later became a police officer for 5 1/2 year's. I don't know or understand why people on this channel make unnecessary or rude and negative comments about what you do. You my friend are an inspiration and pioneer in this day and age. I know you don't know me but if you did we would be friends for life and I mean that. Just to let you know, I love what you've learned and shared with us and even around the world, your an amazing young man and should be proud. You've done more on your channel than you could possibly imagine and that's something to be proud of.
Shawn, for what it's worth I love all that you have done and what you will put out into the future. Brother, don't stop and keep doing what you do, you rock 👌

Thank you Corporal Kelly! Your answers were sincere and honest. As far as naysayers and haters, they should take their gripes and complaints to someone who really cares. That's probably no one. We fans of your channel love and respect your teaching methods, no nonsense and to the point, great visuals with repetition on occasion (which helps me...as we say in Hawaii, once I gets it I gets it). Every video I learn something. I've been hiking, backpacking and camping since age 10 in Ohio and that was 61 years ago. Even with all of my experience on five continents, there is always more to learn. I served in the Air Force as an Independent Duty Medical Technician for 23 years and to stay current I read countless books and manuals (boring!) and watched hundreds of videos. Bushcrafting is no different. Reading, watching countless videos and constantly practicing what you've learned is how you reach the pinnacle of the craft. With all of my experience, I still have a long way to go...and therein lies the enjoyment of what we do. Learning from guys like you, Dave Canterbury, Cody Lundin and so on. There are many different methodologies and philosophies. We as individuals just have to pick what is best for us. As far as gear, military surplus all the way for me. A lot of my gear from the military is still in use today, a backpack, a helmet bag, compass, knives and so on. My gear goes through abuse on outings but I clean and repair after each use. Keep putting out these quality videos as I have much more to learn. Semper Fi, Bruh!

  • @danrobsilva
    @danrobsilva 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I've just found this video even though I've been following your channel for a while and I've got to say, I respect you even more, sir. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us, I'm certainly learning a lot. Your no nonsense, straight to the point style is fantastic.
There is zero problem in screening the comments since you're trying to build a like-minded community of individuals who want to learn and evolve, weeding out the trolls is essential. Also, you're rightfully proud to be a military man, it takes discipline and selflessness to serve and protect your country and by consequence, all of western civilization. I live in Brazil and people with political agendas in academia have been demonizing our servicemen for decades. I'm glad most of the US folks do not fall for this lousy trap.

First off, again, thank you for your service and God bless. Secondly, great video delving into your mindset. It helps to see things differently because our own life experiences differ. I've mentioned before to you. I'm a city boy who loves hiking, fishing, adventuring...etc. I was more of carry everything but the kitchen sink type. Arthritis, degenerating disks in my back, bad knee, bad heart kept me from getting outdoors more. I was late to these types of channels. I found yours thru Survival Lilly. Then I found Dave Canterbury's thru yours. Because of you and Dave's channels, I totally changed my kit mentality, practiced (still practicing & learning btw) the skills shown, and took to improving my health. It's only a year, but I've come a long way since, so thanks to you specifically. I haven't been driven to do something in years. I love the outdoors and it's been almost like a kid like experience to go out and try the things I've seen on these TH-cam channels.

Excellent video, well done. As for the 'lowest bidder' crap, it's the lowest bidder making the product to the specs laid out in the RFP and mandatory specifications. Mil-Spec sells a lot of non-outdoor gear for instance nuts and bolts etc. Why not rucks, knives, belts, tarps and all the other mil surplus gear? I for one am glad I found your channel.

I want to thank you for your channel. Yours is the most indepth and knowledge given than any channel I have seen. I have learned a lot from the videos on some things that I didnt know. As well on things that I could have done to improve what a I was doing. Thank you for being such a great leader and teacher of the way it should be taught.

Your experience with the military training and bushcraft training mirror what I like to think I do with my similar experience. I'm sure a lot of ex-military reflect the same attitude!

I have nothing but the utmost respect and gratitude for our military and law enforcement. People who insult them or complain about them don't realize how much our lives are enriched by these people doing the jobs they do. Putting themselves in harm's way on a daily basis, so we can live peaceful, safe lives. Thank you so much for your service!
Your channel is well done, informative and relevant. Thank you for caring enough to put your time, energy and money into ensuring this information is available so others can learn.

A piece of advice my mom gave me is never stop learning. Learning whatever someone else is willing to teach you because you never know when you might need to know it. Sometimes that means learning how to not do something also. Even failing is a chance to learn. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and skills with us.

Hey Shawn, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed watching this video and getting a 'behind the scenes' peek behind those sunglasses / bandana 😉
I served in the British Army from 1990-2006, so a lot of your comments and beliefs resonate with me. Take care.

I ALWAYS enjoy your no BS quality informational videos. I was happy to see your quals and certificates. I have a bunch in a folder lol. Thanks for sharing. I couldn't agree with you more about the politicization of youtube and other social media. The obvious disdain for those of us that chose a different path is very unfair and is basically economic warfare. Unfortunately, too many of our friends, associates and producers of this and valuable other content are affected. I wish we had an alternative media to provide the quality content that would be important to anyone interested in real survival and the many facets required to be successful. I personally served in combat in the US ARMY in Vietnam and as a fighter pilot in the USAF. My Boy Scout experiences were rekindled by my USAF Survival Schools and made me interested in primitive as well as contemporary survival skills. Keep up the great work Brother, YOU are Good to go!

Just came across this video, hadn't seen it before, don't know how I missed it. I also spent my time in service, both military and civilian, and learned to read people. From the first video of yours that I watched I could tell that you were knowledgeable and no nonsense and your credentials, however they were attained, did not need explanation. I teach basic skills to people when they ask me, but with my time being limited, due to work (I believe that I have mentioned this before), I send them to your channel for instruction and will go over any questions that they may have so that they can polish their skills. Your methods are concise, easy to understand and appreciated. Keep up the good work.

Just found this qa session. For what its worth I never questioned that you ARE a marine corp corporal. The way you walk the way you carry yourself the way you talk. I had 5 uncles that served in wwii. I have seen that the ones in the thick of it might have a couple funny stories to tell but they never brag about the action. I thank you for your service. I thank you for your teaching and i thank you for treating us all like a neighbor perhaps even friend. I am off to watch part 2 thanks for all the ideas and advice.

Doug Bair here, for 3 years, every month I took SPIKE training. From Col. Bo Gritz and his team. You are correct, a person never knows every thing! I am always studying and watching videos as I do yours. I am always practicing the things I learn from these. As you said, no one knows all, and if they do not have the mind set, or loose the mind set from stress they are in trouble!

Well done Shawn! I'm finding myself getting more and more into your channel. Wondering if you could layout the time it took to complete all of Canterbury's course, maybe an estimated overall costs for course and supplies, etc. as well. Also, what do you do today to keep up on your firearms training, specific schools/courses, your own practical tactics or training? Thanks!

I am minoring in being polite and professional but having a plan to kill everyone I meet. You want to see those credentials up close?

Just found this video and I know it's been around for awhile but just reinforces my belief that this is the best no B.S. channel on TH-cam and certainly one of the most informative for enhancing or acquiring outdoor bushcraft skills. Thanks Corp and thank you for your service. If I had been recalled after doing my 4 in the Navy during Vietnam I probably wouldn't have been a happy camper. AR.
