This is certainly one of the most beautiful rock songs ever written. Neil Young was 22 years old when it was released on Buffalo Springfield Again. How is it even possible that anyone so young can write music so achingly beautiful. I heard this version today on Underground Garage. This is a very faithful version and the unusual time signature 3/4, 4/4, 3/4 is left intact. When Regina Spector begins the second verse, it was truly goose bump inducing. The entire soundtrack is excellent, but this stood out.

I agree. Not only is Regina a top notch songwriter, but her cover versions are invariably on point...

Truly, haunting and piercing. A song I was not familiar with.

Neil Young is one of those unique few in our world. Jakob Dylan did an awesome job on the soundtrack and movie.

By far my favorite tune from the movie and the album. The experience of seeing this film and then listening to the new cuts has been so awesome. All of the history and the shared stories of love, frustration, happiness, and the grittiness of what it's like to live and write about these moments has resaturated my love of rock and roll in a way I wasn't expecting. Thank you for all of this. Music Will Save Us All.

Truly an inspiration to reintroduce this song and bring it into the light again. Haunting. A lovely variation of Neil's original, Regina shines.

As others have expressed, the documentary was wonderful. It opened a window on a time that was unique in the history of American music, and stirred a sense of nostalgia in me for a time and place of which I was pretty much unaware until I saw the film. The moment in the film that got to me emotionally every time I watched it (yes, I watched it multiple times) was when Regina sang the line in this song, “Knowing it was gone.” Her look at Jakob was so perfect-a respectful recognition of the tenderness and pain in that moment of realization in the life of someone who has lost love.

A really good love song should hurt you and help you at the same time. This one is GREAT. I am more partial to the original Buffalo Springfield but that does not diminish the painful sweetness of this one. I still have to hide everything sharp from the room before I play it. Well done Jakob ands Regina. Just lovely.

I have searched for what I thought was a Neil Young song for several years and only today did I find out it was when he was with Buffalo Springfield. I did not know the name nor could I remember any words but as Nek below says, "it's achingly beautiful" and the melody of the chorus has just haunted me as I had to hear it again. I'm a long time rocker but had only heard that song on the radio maybe 5 times in 40 years. My heart is truly singing with joy right now as I have listened to every version I have found in this youtube cluster of version. It may be my favorite Neil young. Sometimes the short songs are the best. Like Sade- It's all about our love. a short ditty that never gets air time but so captures the essence of love like this song by Neil.

In the documentary, Andrew Slater says the music was from a time ranging from 1965-1967, or thereabouts. Towards the end of the movie, Jakob Dylan is sitting on a couch with Regina, Beck & Cat, discussing how the early California music era came to the end because it was transitioning from a group-based vibe to one focusing on the individual artist (i.e., Neil Young leaving the Buffalo Springfield), and they used "Expecting To Fly" as the background tune. Even Stephen Stills suggested that Neil's song was his way of saying goodbye to the band. Regardless of why Neil wrote the song, it was an exceptional song to end with, especially when they showed Neil jamming by himself to a tune as the credits rolled.

It's just singing. Like people do around campfires. Neil's emotional investment in this song created something akin to an otherworldly experience. It's really his crowning achievement in song and hearing this type of treatment is like being forced to observe and list every monotonous detail of an average person's typical day.

I sure enjoyed the documentary and the music. In my personal opinion Jakob Dylan cannot sing for crap!! Terrible voice!! Living off his father's name. With that said, Regina Spektar has a Beautiful voice!! I wish she would have dang the entire song!!
