I work in concussion research and the safety bump on this helmet is huge. It is the safest road helmet as measured by Virginia Tech's Helmet rating system (very robust and valid testing). A good alternative from Specialized is the Align 2 Mips at $50. Not quite as protective but still outperforms almost all higher priced helmets including the Evade 3.
Great points! It's wild to think you can get a $50 helmet with so much built-in safety. I'd hate to have a spill and wish I had spent a few extra $$$ on safety.
I got both helmets. Raced 100 miles prevail 3 on the road. Very satisfied. No pressure points and yes the evade 3 just arrived today. Can’t wait it put it to the test.
Where do the front straps exit from the helmet. I could stand the prevail 2 when the straps exited in the middle of the shell , therefore the straps don’t lay flush on your head. I’ve had tone of helmets and I’ve gotta say the smith trace is right up there with the best!!! But again, it’s all about what fits your head the best
Thank you for the detailed review. I'm a commuter (not a lycra wearing road bike rider) in Australia and the summers here get hot. I've been looking for a helmet that has plenty of airflow and this is it. I was worried it would look like a mushroom as I wear size large, but it doesn't and that's because of the narrow, shorter sides.
If I hadn't just purchased a Sweet Protection Falconer, this would've been top of my list. Wish it came in at a cheaper price point for the sake of rider safety everywhere. Excited to see what you have planned next!
@@hankschrader2353 yes it is - the fit, form, versatility makes it a much better helmet. The new 3 is sitting way to high on the head - u look stupid sry. New lazer helmet even has a better rating on safety and looks good like the falconer

Random question for you in UK pricing. The prevail 3 is £275 here and I can get the prevail 2 vent for £120. I already have a prevail 2 vent that I use on almost every ride and really like. I was thinking about getting an extra helmet as sometimes my first gets sweaty/rained on and as a 10 hour per week rider (and cycling instructor on top so I tend to be stood around in a helmet for 5 hours a day, two to three days a week). Do you think I will feel the benefit of the extra £155 or should I go for the cheaper prevail 2 that I really like but would like more ventilation if I was being picky. TIA!
They’re both great helmets- you can’t go wrong with either and I think they’re equally comfortable, maybe the Protone icon with the slight edge simply because it’s so light.
I tried on three kask protone icon helmets at my local bike shop. All three fell apart while turning the adjustment dial. Shop said there's an easy fix but I bought a prevail 3 instead. Kask ruined the protone 💀
For those who have a round head, this helmet is VERY oval. The medium was too narrow and the large had a gigantic gap between the back of the head and the helmet.
@@Hatr316 I ordered the Kask Protone Icon and Utopia as well as the Lazer G1 to try. All great for my round head and I kept them all. I would try those out and see if you like them
I don't like the look, have the prevail 1 and 2 and am looking into getting an evade 2 to add to my collection that includes a local brand helmet and a giant rev helmet. I think just like all the other helmets released by spez this past few weeks (evade 3, the tt darthvader helmet) they all need a redesign or just use the old design.
I bought the ridiculously expensive Prevail 2 a few years ago. Emphasis on ridiculous. It’s like a Gucci bag. The price has nothing to do with the cost to make it.
True. I like team edition (black&white) but ... without xxl S-WORKS name. Light grey would be o.k. but in this case helmet look like portable advertising panel. I ordered team edition but I will put some white stickers over it.
I just purchased this helmet, and it doesn’t have the large font plastered on both sides. A small silver metallic inlay has the s works name. Maybe this is a team model/version; it came from the new Specialized store in Carlsbad, CA.

Always a good review bro!

The falconer is an even better helmet and looks better also👍👍👍
No it’s not. At least not from a more or less objective viewpoint regarding safety.

I sold my prevail 3 and went back to the previous model as the extra weight was noticeable on my neck. It just wasn't foe me.
Interesting! I’ve been a fan thus far.
@@outdoorbros_ Yes and I love most if not all specialized products and innovations. I especially noticed the weight most on my randonneuring bike.

The most annoying tactic by Specialized is to plaster their name font as large as possible onto everything.

Really bummed that neither of the new generation helmets have Fidlock.

It's heavier, uglier and more expensive than prevail 2.
