    I appreciate this video as someone who's been trying to potty train their 5mo old puppy for the last few months but the one frustration I have with videos like these is that it assumes that we all have access to big, grassy, quiet, fenced off backyards that the dogs can run around on-of course it would be easier for you to potty train with that set up! But for those of us who live in apartments in busy, loud cities with minimal to no yard access, this adds complexity to the potty training and makes it so much harder of a process. As for me, while I do have a small, shared yard but it's dirt and has all kinds of things on it that distracts my puppy-leaves, branches, rocks, weeds, seeds from trees, etc. Knowing that she's at a stage where she wants to put *everything* in her mouth, we got one of those fresh grass subscriptions and have cordoned off her potty area with an x-pen. But the distractions of the city-cars and motorcycles and pedestrians going by, dogs barking, an occasional leaf blowing in the wind, my upstairs neighbors coming down to check their mail-we're still having a hard time keeping her focused enough to do her business. Sometimes we're taking her in and out 6x in a row, knowing that she really really has to go but the moment she's outside, something distracts her, and she "forgets". It's gotten to the point where we get so tired that we bring her inside and pray that she actually pees on the pad because then we'll at least know she's gone and we can have a break from this annoying dance. I say all of this to say: I would love to see more trainers talk about distractions during potty training, how to train around them, and what to do if you're potty training in areas that are noisy and not grassy, as a lot of us aren't blessed with beautiful, green, private backyards.

      yes! And the fact that some of us have to use pee pads for months before our pups are fully vaccinated because we don't have any safe place to take them out to. It's a lot of advice that's only for suburban people on youtube.

      @@MadisonSievers you do not have to keep them indoors just bec they aren't vaccinated. You just keep them away from other dogs.

      @@tranquility9325 this actually isn't true - because of the high traffic of pets & rodents in the city, their urination is everywhere which poses a super high risk for puppies to contract parvo. That's not true everywhere but in a dense city with recent parvo cases, it is.

    • @brunobotelho4502

      YES to this post. Whenever I see videos about potty training, they're always about cases that you open the door and there's a whole forest behind your yard.
      To my experience though (not an extensive one, I'm just training my second doggy), pads are always going to be handful in apartments. I don't experience trouble with my dog knowing there's a specific spot to pee while inside the house. Once I was able to go walking, they naturally started holding their business to do when they go out. I don't know if it's a good idea, professionaly speaking, but snacks are always good cues to reinforce something I want them to do again, pooping and peeing outside included. And when they can't hold them, they'll use the pads. Here's the thing: pads are expensive - at least where I live, so being able to take the dog to walk to do their business is a huge plus. But usually we can't manage to take them outside just for a quick pee and come back in. But the more you can take them outside, the more your pads will last.

      Omg, you hit the nail on the head. I'm having the same problem with my puppy - he doesn't want to go outside - I don't know what it is - too many other dogs and smells around, cars, rain, ppl who want to pet him. Too hot? Too windy? He likes going outside, but doesn't like peeing or pooping there. I don't know what to do. I even caught him almost squatting inside once, grabbed him, but it took a few minutes to go down in elevator and stairs to the street/grass, and by that point he "forgot". We went back inside and he did it inside pretty much right away. I didn't have time to catch him. All that wad left to do is to say "eh-eh" and now I think he is starting to hide from me. 🤷‍♀️

    Unfortunately my puppy at 7 months is still primarily using her pads inside. She got used to it as a younger puppy and our winter was extremely harsh this year which prevented spending the needed time outside. Once the snow melted and since, all she wants to do is sniff and eat everything on the ground. It's been very frustrating and I feel like it's too late and it will be like this forever. When she does go outside it's at the dog park (both pee and poopoo) but at home just pee.

    I’m completely against using puppy pads. Our breeder used them and our puppy still hasn’t grasped fully the idea of only going potty outside! I watch him constantly and he still manages to find a spot to pee in the house. We have caught him in the act many times and yell ‘NO’! He clearly understands he’s doing wrong but still has accidents. I’ve never had so much problems getting a puppy potty trained! Your advice is fine but it’s common sense we already exercise. You got anything else? Thanks!

    I’ve had my boy 71 days and he still won’t show a clear sign, like going to the door! But the biggest problem is that this dude had ZERO training before he came to me, and I got him at just about 4-1/2 months old.
    But I have noticed his annoying me by biting with zoomies is a pretty clear indicator that he needs to go out, this has happened every time before an accident. So I listen to that wild behavior type communication, as well as taking him out after every meal, after all play times and training sessions, after a nap, first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. So I’m catching him most times, we’re having very few accidents now. He’s been sleeping though the night without crying since about 2 weeks after we got him, with zero accidents, that I’m most grateful for! 🤣 So I know I so totally own the accidents that happen now, becuase it’s always whenever those rules aren’t strict followed by the rest of my family. Damn teenagers 🙄 😂
    I just wish he’d ring bells we have hanging at the door we take him out through to go to his spot to do his business, our previous dog taught himself that neat trick!! I was hoping hearing them ring every time we go out that he would make the correlation and get it, but that’s not been the case just yet… I’m still holding out hope 🤞
    But during the bad snow storm he wouldn’t go out, he’s a very short haired tiny guy who we strongly believe is mostly Miniature Pinscher who came from Texas, so he absolutely hates the cold, besides the snow was taller than he was 🤣 What I did was set up a temporary spot, out in my unheated garage and right in front of the garage door, so it still was cold and had the scent of being outside, but without actually being outside. He understood immediately and after a day he transferred back to going outside like a champ! I didn’t want to confuse him but I needed not to have those accidents inside and ruin all the work we had done.

    So what do we do when we have the dog on a consistent schedule, take them out at the appropriate times, but then the puppy will pee in the crate with no indication? I've been looking for her tell, but she doesn't have one yet. The puppy in question is 13 weeks old, and again is heavily managed. We've even tried decreasing the crate space, taking her out every hour (it was too frequent for her, so we moved it back to every 2 hours), but again, she still hasn't figured out the way to tell us she has to go out yet. When she does have an accident, she hates being dirty, so thankfully no bad genetics are at play. We're at a loss!

    I watch a lot of puppy potty training videos and all of them state that being quick is important but what if you're disabled and you can't physically be quick and pick up your puppy to go outside? I'm in a wheelchair most of the time and can't pick up a puppy or quickly get them outside on a house lead. If I would try to guide them outside with a lead, the puppy would pee along the way because it's not being picked up. Would you say it's recommended to use puppy pads in this situation until the puppy can hold their bladder better or are there other ways?

    • @DeadlyDan
      @DeadlyDan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No offence but if you can't physically meet the needs of the dog you shouldn't own one. Puppy pads are a lazy solution to a problem which can be solved in days if done right. If you can't take the dog out for a toilet how about exercise? Dogs need to run.

    • @AzumiXVampire
      @AzumiXVampire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@DeadlyDan I have a 6 year old dog and he can go to outside just fine. I trained him to walk next to the wheelchair on a flexi lead and I trained with a dog trainer to use that flexi lead correctly. The flexi lead is attached to the wheelchair and whenever I use the command 'break' he is allowed to roam 5 meters ahead of me so he can sniff around and do his business. I also let him run around freely in a controlled environment and his recall on those places is really good. I walk him 2 hours a day while in my wheelchair. To say disabled people can't own dogs without knowing their own situation is ignorant.
      People in wheelchairs can own dogs just fine and we can also provide to the dogs needs albeit in a different way.

      No. It's their safe place. Make it like a den. Put treats in their to encourage them to get comfy in it. Feed them in it. Leave the door open so they can go in it whenever they want to.
      Put them in it for short periods at a time so they can start getting used to it.

I knew It was getting a bit silly when as I sat on the loo the doggies peed in cyncronisation on their pee pads opposite. Feeling a little hopeless thereafter I took them out in the garden every hour . Of course they just stared at me . I tried pretend squatting on the grass as I was obviously The Pack Leader ( not) and they would just learn from my direction . Well hell no. The neighbour thought the middle aged woman next door was bonkers. So with a heavy heart it was back to puppy pads for life . RIP FLO , BETTY . Winnie ex puppy farm girl hanging on . Same here!!! My puppy is 5 months old and pees and poops outside but there are times that 5 to 10 minutes later without any warning he pees inside. I do keep him outside 10 to 20 minutes to be sure he is finished.

    My basset hound pup cannot understand that we want his piss outside. It is becoming mentally unraveling. We have done all of these tricks. I have been on a schedule since day 1. We get him on walks. We don't let him drink for 2 hours before bed. I give him treats and praise him when he does go outside. He knows the bell on the back door that let's him out. He will go ring the bell to go out. I will go and rush to the door to let him out and once the door opens he stares at me and pees all over the floor. 6 inches from the door.
    I feel like I am at my wits end. He loves peeing in his crate and then sitting in it. My poor wife's carpet is being destroyed. She is over it. It has been 8 months. We might have to give him to a friend if he can't turn it around.

      I think he might actually be mentally challenged. He is such a nice dog. But has no grasp of NO. He has no tell. He will pee laying down. He will pee in his sleep. He will pee in your lap, on my bed. I have tried being nice. I have tried harsher punishment like the spray bottle or the coin shaking in a can. I have literally tried everything I can think of. We have tried everything I could find online.

      @@ericpettyfishing have you taken him to the vet? He may have some sort of parasite, infection or potentially something more serious like the beginning stages of kidney disease.

      Sorry, I have to think there is something you are doing - without knowing it - contributing to this difficulty. Dogs have two fear periods - 8-13 wks and 7-8 months. Have you or your wife (who may not be in love with the dog) yelled at the dog - you may have scared him somehow. Pls talk to your vet. But maybe it is best to give to a friend if you are frustrated. Puppy, like children, will feel your stress and/or anger. Dont let the dog suffer.
      There are other ways to potty train. Be sure dog is getting enough exercise. As McCann states in another video, some dogs pee and poo twice so have to go out again within 10-15 minutes. If something outside scared your puppy during these vulnerable times in development, that may be the problem. Please do not be so quick to blame the dog. And if Dog is afraid, it will take much more effort to remedy. Hope your friend is patient + kind.

    With my dog the puppy pads were gone in 3 days, she never once needed to use them because I had it all planned out, the dogs toilet schedule in excel, I knew exactly when she was needing a toilet an pre-empted any mess and bad habbits by just being on schedule!
