    Just one point - you should always rinse off the surface between grades, or you may still have some course grit on the surface from the previous grade, which will spoil the finish.

    you are absolutely right...as always..!!!even when you are polishing metal you need to go all way up to 1500-2000 grit for a mirror finish....!!!many sites say that 600 grit is enough but they are wrong...or they use a coarser and then a finer rubbing compound....transparent plexi acrylic is like glass ....and THE FINER GRIT PAPER YOU USE THE MORE TIME YOU CUT OFF FROM RUBBING POLISHING...!!!!

    600 grit wet sand, then 1200 grit wet sand, rubbing compound, and metal poish, then you could use automotive lens restorer as the last step. In the summer you can do this in direct sunlight to soften the plastic a little so it doesn't take so much elbow grease and it makes the products you use more effective.
    Thanks for uploading this video.

    Hi there. Good to see these tips, really hoping that they work for me.
    I have 8 pieces of large, clear perspex(275x275x10mm each) of which need to be *spotless*. They are covered in deep scratches as they are used as a part of a stage people have stepped on for 12 years now.
    Would this be the best method to use, or am I best off looking into other methods?
    Thanks if anyone can reply,
    - Brittany

    Thanks, I really like your method, I just bought an old Technics turntable, 30 years old, and it still works fine. But there is an awful scratch just in the spot you look down through the glass to see where the needle is.. It's too deep for polish I think, isn't there some sort of substance available, like the type carglass repair people use?

    Fantastic video, really informative and gets to the point - loved it. I've just bought a used bike helmet that comes fitted with a perspex eye-shield visor. The visor is badly scratched all over (it's old and has had a lot of use). It's possible to see through it but it could be better! As it's clear see-through perspex, would your method for removing scratches work? Thanks in anticipation.
    PS. to replace the eye-shield with a new one would cost £50 (it's a real high end helmet).

      You should be able to polish out the scratch. I just did the headlights on my van last week with a polishing kit that I bought from banggood. The techniques in this video will work but the polishing kit made it really easy. Thinking about it following this video might be the best bet for good optical quality, they use this technique on some aircraft canopies.

    I was taught this in an Industrial Arts Major class:
    Rinse between all applications of the grits.
    Sand each sanding at ninety degree angles. This allows one to see the new grit remove the deeper lines of the previous sanding.
    Use at least three grades of wet and dry paper, The more you can afford to but, the better the results.
    Use at least three grades of polish, too.

    hello handyman,
    i tried a few times in polishing the old windshield on me boat, used your method...made it 20% better.
    still pretty cloudy, should i give up on this old perspex windscreen because of its age? others told me that oldish perspex dies after a while...is that true mate?

      @ultimatehandyman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on exactly what it is made from.
      Perspex normally lasts a very long time before it fades, it even comes with a ten year guarantee when you buy it.
      Have you tried to polish it on the inside and outside?
      Canopies on some fighter aircraft are made from Perspex and they use this method to polish out the scratches, which makes me think that perhaps your screen is made from something else?

    I was going to try the metal polish approach as I have some unsightly scratches on my car dashboard (the clear acrylic bit, right in front of the speedo dial). Caused by a previous owner 'polishing' it with a gritty cloth, no doubt :-( The scratches aren't bad enough to warrant using wet or dry paper, I was going straight in with metal polish. Do you use solvol autosol? Finish off with toothpaste, maybe? What do you think? Thanks for posting. Kind regards.

    I just purchased a lucite table which i would like to resell. However, it does have some light scratches and haze in some areas. I'm a little afraid to use sandpaper on it but in your video it seems to have worked. Is it safe to say it should work for the lucite? It is clear lucite and no deep scratches, just not new looking. Thanks for any help you can give.

    Great work, like new. I used to do similar repairs at work. A buffer attached to a drill makes the final finish process quicker and less wear and tear on your arm. Just let the polish do the work, too much pressure or too high of a speed can damage the plastic

      I see no reason why it wouldn't.
      That's the reason I came here and from everything I'm reading online, this is the standard method. A word of warning however: it seems like doing this will make it less reflective. It should still be transparent, but won't be quite as glossy and shiny.

    I'm redoing my 72-inch bathroom sink. I wish to sand it down to remove all old finish (it's 20 years old), then bring it back to a uniform look.
    My one question: when you say "metal polish", can you provide a brand name or type?
    I don't mean to be dense, I just don't want to screw up that final step!!! For instance, would Brasso or Maguires be usable?

      ***** No - that's a very good point and one I did not consider. You can purchase special kits for this sort of thing but they are between £10 and £15 and I'm convinced it's just small pieces of 1500 and 2000 wet and dry and a small tube of rubbing compound. I guess I could just play it safe but I hate having to purchase 'special kits' that are really just a convenient collect of average items.

      I'm not sure to be honest. This method works on acrylic but it's unlikely that your washing machines plastic is acrylic. You could try it on an inconspicuous area though to see if it works or not.

    Hi,
    I’ve used this technique on white acrylic and have not been able to achieve the finish that you have. I’ve gone through the listed steps but my end result was not the shiny acrylic it previously was and the scuff marks from the wet and dry paper I used are still visible. Any advice at all?
    Thank you!

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's important that the wet and dry paper is used in every step, as effectively what you are doing is scratching away at the surface. When you get to the last grade of wet and dry paper the surface should be scratched all over, but these scratches should be removed with the silver polish or acrylic polish. Some people have recommended toothpaste for the final polish, but I have never tried that.
      Thanks for the comment

      Ultimate Handyman I had a few scratches on a large 1.9M white acrylic disk - I began with using wet 600 paper using circular motions and moved onto the wet 1200. I then used rubbing compound and finished with metal polish (the finish being worse then I began with lol - the scratches from the paper all very visible) are you able to advice where I have gone wrong..

      @ultimatehandyman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can remove the scratch, but you will never get the frosted finish back.
      If you start sanding/polishing it you will remove the frost effect. The frost effect is made when the acrylic sheet is cast between two sheets of glass, either one or both sheets of glass are etched to give the glass a frost effect which is transferred to the acrylic (the casting surface).

      No, it will only work on Acrylic and some plastics, fibreglass is normally painted, so I don't think this will work on that. You might have a chance with the windshield but I don't think they use acrylic, but you could try it in an inconspicuous area.

    My finished product came out cloudy. The only thing I did different was use Wrights Silver Polish instead of a tube polish. Could this be why?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's probably the final polish that has made it cloudy.
      They use silver polish on some aircraft canopies to remove the scratches, perhaps Wright's silver polish is not good on acrylic.

    • @alchance662
      @alchance662 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cleaned off any polish residue with both acetone & Turpentine. It became crystal clear for a while, then went back to cloudy after it fully dried. In fact, the area will become cystal clear when wet. Could these be micro scratches? If so, should I use compound or something else to get them out prior to polishing?
