9:00 you'll also need to refuel , re provision your stores , refill your fresh water and a thousand and one maintenance tasks it takes to keep a vessel seaworthy .
As someone who worked on trawlers I can confirm being at sea is a mix of 'nothing is happening' to 'omg we're going to die' . Could imagine being on a submarine In a war would be even more horrific though .
I know, right?! I wish I could do that every time I play a game. "Gosh, I could really use a 4 now." *rolls a 4*. Games would be so much easier like that. To be fair, 7 is the most likely result (16.7%), so the odds were with us a slight bit there. :)
The sea is calm, way too calm. My anticipation of waiting for that eventual storm to occur is almost palpable; it's great. 😁 Anyway, things should get more interesting in subsequent patrols, and that "Good Luck Charm" that was fittingly acquired on the "Lucky Patrol Box" is an immense help going forward, if nothing else to at least extend U-86's service life.
Yeah, the future is most definitely going to get very real for U-86 in the near term. I think we're really going to be up against it soon. :) ~ And yeah, that one patrol zone, the most northern one, has been incredibly lucky for us! Unescorted ships and good luck charms. That good luck charm in essence gives us a free life, as far as how I intend to use it. So that could come in very handy if we pull one of those "you died" rolls. :)
That lucky charm will come in so handy! I mean, it's basically a free life, at least how I'm thinking to use it. We'll only play it to stop a "you're dead" roll, probably. Although if we had a chance to sink a capital ship and got a bad roll trying to do so, I could see us using it in that case too. Should make some fun agonizing over what to do with it! :)
I was struck as I briefly celebrated the sinking of the Sea Venture that I was, in a way, celebrating the deaths of other people's grandfathers. Many Merchant Marine men had families already, because they were older than the usual people in service. Sorry to be a bummer. It just struck me (one of my grandfathers was in the Merchant Marine, but survived the war).
My grandfather was also a merchant marine until germany was defeated. Then he enlisted in the marines to go fight the Japanese. While at Paris Island the allied nuked Japan and they surrendered. At the time you joined "until the war was over" so he got out before his basic training was over. My other grandfather was part of an anti tank unit that stormed Normandy. He died of alcoholism i. The 70s. The only story I ever heard from him about d day was that his feet froze... Thats how he described it. Can't blame the guy. Saving Private Ryan and Call of Duty and Medal of Honor can only show so much and if was worse than those images I think I may have frozen as well.
I find it hard to believe I would have had the courage on D-Day. The amazing part is that they intentionally chose inexperienced troops, because experienced troops would have realized how insane the idea was.
@@ZillaBlitz while I was playing the Silent Victory my better half was cheering with me when I sunk ships but then said: "Wait, there are people on those ships, how can you!" And that was the end of her cheering for me in that game, hehe.
Excellent to hear, Second Watch Officer Rae. Your exemplary service to the crew is noted and appreciated. High crew morale will be needed for the challenges ahead. We will be tested.
Good patrol again. Crumbs this is going so darn well. But it's not so much luck, more the game recreates these early years so well. But of course now you've just picked up some real luck from that event. Good, you'll no doubt need it soon :)
That's a good point, yes, and that makes me think we really needed to pile up a lot more tonnage in these early years to have a successful campaign. I feel like we've had a relatively small number of targets for 5 patrols. Looking at the rule book, they mention 375k tons as a requirement for the top medal in the game. I see no way we can get close to that with under 30k sunk in the first year, pretty much. But mainly, I'm hoping to keep us alive for as long as possible. :)
For sure. We're slowly making our way out of the "Defeat" category. I think if we can stay alive we should be able to make 100k, which would slide us into the "victory" category. That'd be a nice place for U-86 to end up, I think. But yeah, a nice big 20k capital ship would be a huge plus.
Hi Scottgun - Sure! I bought this music pack on the Unity asset store: tinyurl.com/yaksblt9 It's listed for games there but the licensing rights include video production. I've also seen parts of it super cheap in bundles on places like Humble Bundle. I got it slightly on sale during a Unity store sale, and I've been quite happy with it. It's got a good 10-15 tracks that I think work well for historical games.
Messaged GMT but no response yet. A couple of things I noticed on the mission two the British Isle area one has (M) & another Has (A) after. Is there a subtle difference from just the ordinary British Isles. Also like the new storage unit behind you. Fingers crossed you don't get sunk.
You've messaged GMT about buying the game? I think it's out of stock there. The only mail order place I've seen in the US that still has it is Enterprise Games (looks like they have 1 left now), and I think they ship internationally (You have to email them). That might be pretty expensive with shipping and whatnot. I wonder if Ebay or some English stores might be a cheaper option. There are also The Hunted, Silent Victory, and Beneath the Med, that all use the same system with slight modifications. You might have better luck finding one of those if you're not too picky about the theater. :) ~ And thanks, IKEA for the win! :)
You should also lower the background music in the video so we can understand your speech and commentaries, expecially if we are not native english speaking followers...
Thanks for the feedback! I'll check that in the next episode, but that's good to know. In case it helps, I've found that if I lower the volume on my speakers as I'm listening to the episode, it's easier for me to hear the commentary. I'll check the balance for Episode 9, though. Thanks!
In this video you made the same error you do in the previous video: you roll 8 (minute 4:00 // 4:02) but you selected the encounter written at the 7th place/row of the encounter chart... Beware these chart selections... Please... Otherwise your campaign will be a mess to be recorded and commented correctly... It will be falsed by your wrong selections of encounters...
Hi there - Happy to clarify, but we are rolling 2 6-sided dice, so the first result shown is a 2. There is no result 1. It's tricky to see without the numbers, I know, so that's why I've added a red highlight box around the result. I generally double check these when editing to see if I made a mistake, but I've not noticed one yet. Thanks, though! :)
Good luck is great !
Let's hope it keeps up! :)

I imagine there would always be a good number of things breaking as well, just from normal use in extreme conditions.
"U-Bootfahrer" believed very much in fate. Being a "lucky boat" gave the crew convidence.
I was very much trying to instill that line of thought in this crew too. Believing your lucky can be powerful, for sure! :)
As someone who worked on trawlers I can confirm being at sea is a mix of 'nothing is happening' to 'omg we're going to die' . Could imagine being on a submarine In a war would be even more horrific though .
I bet! And especially since we know that 75% of U-boat personnel died in the war. That's brutal.
I loved that you managed to roll the 7 for that re-roll token after just saying how great it would be to get. You need that luck to continue!

Another rather uneventful patrol. But as you said, it's only gonna get harder from here on out. But I would love for you to have the lucky boat!

Yeah, the whole concept of historical gaming is a bit odd when you think of the real events they represent. For sure.

The men seem to be in high spirits since rounding the north of scotland, sir. This next month will drag on until we sail again.

Perhaps a handful of lucky rolls... A few more tankers and possibly a capital ship might help us along.

Good vid. Would you mind sharing where you get your background music from? I'd like to find something similar.

@@ZillaBlitz Thanks
Sure thing, happy to help! I did notice it's gone up in price. When I got it, the base price was $100
Your game has alot of sound effects. I didn't get any sound effects. It must have been an expansion. :P
Hahaha! Yes, this is the deluxe version with the sound effect dice. It's pretty cool and highly recommended. ;)

10:46 nothing worse than the crew considering a ship to be unlucky , its a self forfilling prophecy
Yes, and I'm sooooo glad we got that lucky horseshoe! That'll be a big boost to morale! :)

Were convoys not a thing in 1940?
