I hunted the Karoo with a Anchutz 22 hornet with monolithic hollow points for springbok. All my friends had 308,s and 223,S and kept teasing me about not getting anything with that peashooter. They walked for miles all over the farm and as soon as they came near the game it ran way and they were not able to get a shot. All the bush is only hip high and the game can see for miles. My guide and I sat down in a good area and waited drinking and eating Biltong. We heard shots in the distance and all the buck ran about a 100 meters from us and stopped looking back at the hunters. I chose my buck and used one headshot and finished my hunt. The buck moved about 50 meters and stopped to look around. I could have hunted more but I had what I wanted while all the others had 3 more days of walking around the farm to get their buck. Only on our way back home did I explain how I managed to get my buck. All my friends were peeved with me for not explaining earlier so that they did not have to walk so much.😂😂😂 while they were trying to get their buck I spent my time hunting Dussy ( almost like ground squirrels but heavier built) in the hills. It was an awesome place to hunt and I miss going to the Karoo to hunt.
The .22 Hornet is a very underrated firearm. With hand loads, I can achieve 3245 fps and 935 ftlbs of muzzle energy using a 40gr balistic tipped projectile. Accuracy is great right out to 300 yards.

It's amazing you guys lug around heavy rifles for hunting. Here in the states it's about carrying as light as possible.
Not all of us carry those heavy things around. For the hunting he was doing its fine but walk and stalk in the bush veld for hour's and hour's you will kak bricks.
But each to their own.
Perhaps it's because he as a target shooter is most comfortable with target rifles which are often heavy things. He shoots what he trained most with.
I don't know but it makes sense. Like training with a .22 and carrying a 9mm for defense is a bad idea.
He's comfortable with his rifle and very efficient as we see in the video. I'm just glad it's not my shoulder. But he is sponsored by MDT and sells their products so it would be a little bit funny to have him walking around with his rifle in a walnut/ synthetic stock.
From what I see around the net it's the opposite. You guys walk around dressed up as ducks haha.

The places at Graaff-Reinet where I hunted Springbok had local labor to do the field dressing and game recovery. However that was 15 yeas ago. Do they not do that anymore? I loved hearing you guys speaking Africans .

Piet, just curious how does the hunting licenses work in SA? In the states we have limits on tags and animals.
But in SA. It seems you all can shoot till you run out of bullets.
Mathew congratulations on your harvest. Well placed ethical shot. And well played on tradition.
All of the land where you may hunt on in SA are large privately owned game farms, so you can simply book a hunting trip with them (in season, winter months), and then you pay per animal you shoot.
twisted logik, most hunting is done on private land so there is no limit, but if you kill all the animals there will be nothing to hunt next year!
Also there are a permit system for some spesies (Blackwildebees in the Free Sate)
But mostly it is up to the farmer to look after his animals so that next year he will have a income.
In America you can kill all the wolves you want to all the pigs you want to all the iguanas all the pythons call the carp all the snake kids anything this invasive there is no limit
It depends on how much cash and freezer space you have. Lol. And jow much meat you need. Game farms is a businesse just like sheep farming. They have to manage the animals well to make it sustainable.

in enjoy to see some hunting traditions, but wondered why you dropped the rest of the liver in the dirt. 8 animals - that could have made a years worth of liverwurst :) do you pretty much have to discard them due to the heat, or is it just not common to use/eat them?
He asked for a smaller piece, so I bummed it and said it got dirt on it 😂, we did wash it and it didn’t go to waste

I love your vids, but unless you sat 50 yards next to your brother that shot at 6:00 was hell of a risk to the guy with the horse in the background. I definately wouldnt have taken that one.
The angle wasn’t great I agree with you on that, but looks way worse on the vid, shooter was sitting all the way right and video camera was all the way left.

@@xxhoytshot25xx18 public land free range deer. South africa its private land game farms. In Namibia my friends uncle harvest between 200 and 300 spring buck a year just to keep there numbers the same. And that's just one farm. Lol

Firstly, there is no such thing as overkill. Second I cant eat the head, so shooting it there I waste no meat.

As a south afrikan i like hunting but definitely wouldn't shoot something like a lion or elephant , many people i know have shot elephants , lions and Leopards but i think it's cruel and unnecessarily... Can anyone share their opinions about this ?
