After reading your comment my thoughts turn to how people in the future will never be so motivated to do what mark did. the main reason being that music is so "available" now to anyone who wants to listen to it, back in the day not everyone had a radio, or a TV, if you wanted to "listen" to music you had to find someone "playing" it, or learn to do it yourself. in the modern day with everyone having a phone, radio to listen to, coupled with that AI will soon take over writing everything, people have pretty much no reason to learn it. you see a similar effect with children where if someone in their family has a talent for something they mentally say to themselves "that guy has that job covered for everyone, i guess i will find something different to be good at ..."

I love how he's sitting there playing really complicated pieces of music like a master and then says "that's not really my thing". Music just drips off of this mans fingers like rain from the heavens. Mr. Knopfler is a true treasure.

I think its even more amazing when you remember that Mark is actually left handed. A naturally right handed player would struggle to play like that I think.
I've noticed that's how a lot of humble guitar players talk. It makes them sound exactly like most of us would talk. I've heard Andy Timmons speak similarly. He refers to his heroes and he talks about them the way someone who reveres Andy's music would about him.
In the history of music Mark Knopfler has left us with so many legendary guitar performances both in the studio and live. I hope he continues to play for many years to come. I have seen him live twice and it was incredible.

I love Mark...I love to watch him play...he makes me want to learn to play...he makes it sound so easy...he is an inspiration to everyone he plays for...just watching him and how much passion he plays with...and he is very humble...down to Earth guy...I very recently met him in an airport first class lounge...he sat next to me and saw that I was freehand sketching the plane on the other side of the window and commented on it and then proceeded to talk to me like we were best friends...we talked about everything from drawing to music and our families and our home towns...Of course I knew who he was I have loved him since I was a little girl and he just really flattered me as he sat and talked with me until my flight boarded...I shook his hand, thanked him ...very decent, very friendly and literally will talk your ear off but I did not mind that at all...I would gladly sit and listen to him again...reminded me why I loved him so much as a little girl
I'm not one for hero worship but he is one of only a few people I'd like to have a chat with. Think that with him instigating the conversation it meant that you could relax and enjoy the conversation. So great to hear that he is a nice, interesting guy in real life.

Nah, not such thing as the 'greatest' guitarist ever... it comes down to personal taste surely. Eric Clapton was my biggest influence early on. From him I went on to learn from the blues guys that influenced him such as BB King, Buddy Guy, Freddy King etc. One of the most creative players I've ever heard is definitely Jeff Beck, although I don't like all of his work. I'm sure Mark Knopfler can do things that Beck can't, and Eric Clapton can do things that Eddie Van Halen can't. They are fantastic on their own personal ways.
I don't play but brought my son (10) a Squire a few months ago. He had been learning to play for a few years at school and to be honest I have not payed too much attention. 6 months ago something changed, my boy still could barley play but his obsession grew. He begged for an electric till I gave in and brought some half decent gear with the advice of my brother in law who plays. In just a few months this Guitar has transformed his life and mine. To watch him progress so quickly is exciting. I relate to Mark's passion here as I have seen it first hand in my own son. I never get sick of hearing him play and our house is filling with music starting early in the morning some days before he goes to school. Really enjoyed this video.

Love to hear about youngsters sticking it out. Good dad. As far as things progressing once he hit the electric I know what you mean. Before I started I had far too many people telling me I had to start on accoustic first, and since one of my favourite hobbies is to cheese obnoxious people off, I went and bought an elecrric first,l then an accoustic. Ended up obsessive about both - electric obsession came first but I love all guitars, electric or accoustic and will play anything - but it took the electric first to get me there. Maybe an accoustic wouldn't have grabbed me like that and I'd be sat here one of the millions who give up. Thats where people's "expert" advice will get you. My advice about that is....dont tell anyone anything.......let them find for themselves......an electric is a major pull for a kid and it's neither better nor worse to start out on one. Whatever grabs your boat first and pulls you in is what does the trick, there is no formula and people with their stuck up advice telling you that you must walk the path like this generally, in my experience, are life's failures dressing themselves up as knowledgable people. I can think of at least one guy who told me accoustic first, and he owns an accoustic and cant play a lick on any guitar, it's there in his living room for show, he even admitted it was just a talking point for people. He had to admit it because I was badgering him to play and he wouldn't and I wouldn;t let it go. And this is the guy telling me I have to learn accoustic first? Screw that and screw him was my opinion. Now I play Mick Taylor solo's and he still sits with his guitar in his living room unable to play it but offering advice anyway lol. Tell your son to watch out for those. Some people show, and some people know. Some people talk, and some people do. You gotta do it how it comes to you, not how others want it for you. It;s a highly personal journey. It has to be, because inflicting the kind of practise hours you need to get good on yourself is a commitment. It;s your commitment, nobody elses, it's your time, your frustration, your determination, your calloused fingers, your reward. Not theirs. Nobody has a right to tell you how to walk that path. Many people will try. If you want to know what the hardest thibg about learning the guitar is, in my experience, it;s all the people who know jack shit who will try to tell you how to do it. Thats the hardest thing about guitar, everything else is achieved through passion. Hard work is not hard work when it's fuelled by passion, it's just pure joy. Heheh beware though, cos next comes the obsession with amplifiers and that one gets expensive!!! Best of luck to you and your son. Have a good journey finding things out for yourselves.
It's amazing to me that someone who's been playing so long is still in touch with what it's like to be a beginner. Most professional guitarists I've seen give advice on finger picking techniques just skim through more complex picking patterns without acknowledging that it takes years to build up that kind of coordination. I think Mark does a good job of making finger picking seem more achievable.
I love how he just "fades out" when he starts playing. The empty eyes shows how he just let it all go and sends his emotions through the guitar. An inspiring man for all of us!

Even though that i like a little bit of Gilmours solo work and very thankful to him for his support of Ukraine, i think that as a musician, huitarist especially, he is not on the same level as Knopfler or Beck.

This instrument is so deep I just love it. It's easy to pick up and after a few sessions you can already play simple song and it "sounds like something". But then you can really go into it and spend a lifetime mastering all the techniques and styles that the guitar has to offer.
I never want to meet this guy! He just seems like a genuine nice person. His personality is just infectious. He comes across as being a better person than what he is a guitar player, and we all know how damn good a player he is. I’d just like to remember him like this. Not ever be disappointed in him being any other way. Does that make sense? Or am I just rambling.

Wonderful, all the greats need to record stuff like this for posterity, can you imagine if we had these for the classics, imagine what Mozart or {my favorite} Debussy could show us. Mark is one of the greats, he has been a star since I was about 19 lol
I grew up on Dire Straits, but i never made it to their concert. I would love to see them, or Mr. Knopfler at a concert one more time. This video was just a pleasure to watch, and brings me back in time.
Mark isn't underrated, because those who know, know...but he really is so undervalued and mentioned in guiatrist discussions. And a better songwriter than most guitarists, too.

This instrument is so deep I just love it. It's easy to pick up and after a few sessions you can already play simple song and it "sounds like something". But then you can really go into it and spend a lifetime mastering all the techniques and styles that the guitar has to offer.

I never want to meet this guy! He just seems like a genuine nice person. His personality is just infectious. He comes across as being a better person than what he is a guitar player, and we all know how damn good a player he is. I’d just like to remember him like this. Not ever be disappointed in him being any other way. Does that make sense? Or am I just rambling.
they always say, "Never meet your heroes." and its for a reason. Check out Brian Johnson from AC/DC talking about Chuck Berry; also, Berry punched Keith Richards in the face because Keith was strumming Berry's guitar backstage...and that dude is hero to almost every walking guitar legend!

I've always believed Mark Knopfler is the most underrated and under appreciated guitarist walking the planet today. This video reaffirms that belief.

Wonderful, all the greats need to record stuff like this for posterity, can you imagine if we had these for the classics, imagine what Mozart or {my favorite} Debussy could show us. Mark is one of the greats, he has been a star since I was about 19 lol

I grew up on Dire Straits, but i never made it to their concert. I would love to see them, or Mr. Knopfler at a concert one more time. This video was just a pleasure to watch, and brings me back in time.

Mark isn't underrated, because those who know, know...but he really is so undervalued and mentioned in guiatrist discussions. And a better songwriter than most guitarists, too.
He is still such a relevant guitar player and he does not seem to age... He'll be 70 soon... A true legend and talent.
