As someone who was himself homeless for two years, this show hit hard in the feels in addition to being funny and heartwarming. It's rare to see 'undesirables' highlighted in any sense on tv or in anime as anything more than a throw away gag or antagonist, so seeing them portrayed in an honest light with a meaningful story meant a great deal.

I cried laughter when Nitta almost got killed by the Yakuza and they quickly realized how badly they messed up. That was the best, the best of the best. 10 minutes of rolling laughter and his face is like "Dude, stop trying to make yourself feel better and let me out." Thats Gintama levels of funny and that truly is high praise.

The scene with Anzu in the amusement park with Nitta had me in tears. She's such a sweetheart, and I never would have expected myself to like her more than Hina by the end. Of course, Hitomi is a close second.

Love Hinamatsuri. Anzu is too precious to not be the best girl. Whenever she smiles.. or heck, whenever she is on screen my cold, dead, frozen heart thaws.
Anzu's character is absolutely astonishing. Honestly one of my favourite anime characters to date. *THIS SHOW IS INCREDIBLE!!!*

I remember being so excited when they announced they were making an anime version of the manga. But then it took so many years that I genuinely forgot about it and wondered if they'd cancelled the project. But boy am I glad it arrived. I used to read the manga about 10 years ago and I remember how much it used to actually make me laugh aloud

Youre lucky you got to read it 8 years ago, I read when the translation first started about year 2014. BTW there is enough content in the manga for a second season, and its ongoing probably going to the last arc seeing they revealed the organizations origin in the latest updates.

I'm not a big fan of comedy anime, but this anime made me want to rethink how I approach watching comedies. I enjoyed watching it and would defiantly watch it again.
It is well balanced. You don't know whether to laugh or to tear at any given episode. Hell, some episodes give you a little bit of both at the same minute but that just makes it even better how they pull this off.
Rashed9000 oh most defiantly I was laughing my ass off at many of the gags and things that went on. The story was interesting and I love the characters heck even the supporting ones have some love and it great.
it's actually pretty western in terms of the timing of its jokes, which is refreshing to see in anime.

Ill give you thumbs up on the review. But had to cut it short. I'm watching it. Episode six had me crying. And I suppose to be a 62 year old man. Even though they say big boys don't cry. But this episode bought me to tear so much, that I cried when she said why do I have good food while they have nothing else to eat or something the way she said it.

I've had a lot of fun with Hinamatsuri. A lot of Nitta's one liners and reactions are tremendous and Anzu has a lot of heart. I got a lot of time for characters like that.
The facial expressions are so spot on throughout this series, the drastic and emotional expressions paired with the deadpan face of Hina keep me laughing every week. Sad its almost over
Came for the laughs but stayed for the warm fuzzies.
I've been watching Hinamatsuri in english thanks to Funimation. Its awesome and I think my favorite character is Anzu.
I think everyone's favourite is anzu. Although now that i think about it hitomi is really close for me.
I just can't get enough of Hina trying to be a good adopted daughter and failing miserably, especially with that deadpan tone of hers.
Hinamtsuri is the biggest hidden gem in existence in the comedy/slice of life genre and I'll die on this hill.
The balance it manages to strike between comedy, absurdity and emotional gutpunches is nothing short of incredible!
I've been waiting for this. Hinamatsuri threw Nichijou off it's #1 Comedy spot on my list for the first time in years. It's genuinely my absolute favourite anime of the season ever since it made me laugh and almost cry just a few minutes apart in episode 6.
There's another really good comedy in next season too, well, if they adapt the manga well.

No kidding - I just watched episode 6. I haven't seen another true comedy that also does drama this well in years.
Michael Johnson They are opting for the best there is in comedy. Impactful, over the top, yet not so over the top that it becomes immersion-breaking. Extremely hard to pull off, but when done right you get Hinamatsuri, where hilarious gags have massive impacts on characters.
Every other comedy would have played Anzu's shoplifting and her money being taken away by the residents to compensate for it as a cheap gag, but Hinamatsuri builds on it. Every other anime would have played her being homeless for a cheap gag, but Hinamatsuri made it the base of Anzu's character arc from a brat to a nice, humble and helpful person.
Every other anime would have returned to the status quo after the bartender scene, but not Hinamatsuri!
Gintama
Grand Blue will become no. 1 when it comes out, and then Kaguya-sama will come and take that spot. Comedy anime are going to get more and more elevated standards. This year is really good for anime - Saiki S2, BNHA S3, Shokugeki, Hinamatsuri, Grand Blue, Darling in the Franxx(when its being good), Takagi-san, Fate/Extra, Jojo Part 5: Vento Aureo, Kaguya-sama etc.
I discovered Hinamatsuri when I saw a GIF of the Kung Fu fight and got really excited, because honestly it was better choreographed and animated than 95% of action anime, and I assumed it was going to be a martial arts anime full of action. I got blue balled by Hinamatsuri, but I can’t be mad at them, because it was one of the best comedies I have watched in a long time.
Hitomi is easily the best character for me. She basically achieves economic wealth and a solid network of important people just because she can't say no to anything. Her reactions to life and her fortunate but unfortunate turn of events makes the show absurd but funny and good.
Hina's arc teaches you to be mindful.
Anzu's arc teaches you to be grateful.
Hitomi's arc teaches you that 99 percent of adults are fucked in the head.
And they say that Yakuza can't work in a comedy....
Man, this is exactly what this show surprised me, all characters still changing and it make you curious about what's next? And the constant changing of the opening and ending intriguing you. Nice review/comments about Hinamatsuri
The manga takes this to an even better turn! All of the characters literally grow up and now Hina is in highschool (but still the same old same old Hina with a few improvements here and there) and gosh it gets Steins;gate-esque in some later parts of the manga. Totally recommend reading it 100000000/10

Hinamatsuri is one of those shows where you came for laughs and stayed for the feels.
This anime is my new favorite comedy anime, and I really like that almost every episode has a pretty sweet/emotional ending ^^
One thing that really makes me love this show is the way it humanises its characters by using elements of drama. It is the same as with GTO, the dramatic scenes make the characters seem more human, elevating them from being cardboard-cutouts for the next punchline to feeling like real people. In this way, it not only makes you more invested in the story but also enhances the jokes.
I wish more shows would use this style of comedy instead of the punchline-driven, never changing sitcom wannabees we get all too often.
Just watched the first episode, it was fantastic. It's way too early to say, but Hina is already one of my favorites in Hinamatsuri. I've always enjoyed characters who are "emotionless", but show a tad bit of emotion occasionally; even more so when the voice actor nails it.
This needs a season 2. I want one so bad
YES! I've been waiting for someone to talk about Hinamatsuri! It's my favorite anime this season. I look forward to it every week even more than MHA, and considering the huge shonen fanboy I am, that's saying something.

One of my all-time favorite manga/anime. Very happy to see someone reviewing this anime on youtube. Every time I complete an episode I come to youtube to see any reviews.
For manga enthusiasts, we’ve known this gem for a while. Kinda felt distraught it wasn’t getting the love it deserved in the first opening week it came out but definitely glad people turned around with it (myanimelist scores being subpar broke my heart).
Just got back from binging, and I'm starting to get so much more emotional than I am laughs.
The most recent episodes concerning Anzu and the young bartender have almost made me cry, especially when I can honestly relate to the idea of being separated from high school life and family way too early.
Can't wait for her to turn it around though!
So who else is all "Don't make me choose!" when it comes to a favorite _Hinamatsuri_ character. I mean, I *tried* to narrow it down but seriously, the shows all about great (even if minor) characters!

I watched the first episode , but all the pausing and rewinding I had to do to read the superfast subtitles completely ruined my mood. Might be funny for people who don't have to rely on subtitles, but for me it was mostly irritating and annoying.

Well, atleast Utako is nice to people in her neighborhood. Remember, she is involved in capturing Anzu when she became a thief, and later looking for someone to adopt her if I remember correctly. She protested when the government decided to get rid of the homeless even though it didn't work. But yeah, the way she treated hitomi is terrible, though it is the beginning in the greatest gag of this series, lol
I was wondering why this show wasn't getting talked about since I haven't seen many people talking about it. I watched some clips of it a week back and I was genuinely confused why people hadn't picked this series up, since its delivered nothing but quality. I guess people are more interested in a shitty adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul:Re than a genuinely good series.
And really… there aren't many anime that are "talked about" this season. Megalo Box and Aggretsuko seem to be the only ones that get any sort of hype (save for MHA, obviously). It's not for lack of good shows either.
Lyendith You actually reminded me to go watch Aggretsuko. But yeah this season seems kind of oddly silent. It's not that there aren't some big names scattered around either. With Tokyo Ghoul, Hero Aca and Shokugeki no Soma sitting pretty, there doesn't seem to be much discussion about anything other than Hero Aca. I guess that may be due to the fact that Tokyo Ghoul: Re's adaptation is complete ass, and we've had so much Shokugeki no Soma in the past 2 years that people are probably stuffed, pun intended.
Hopefully MB's video marks a surge of popularity for a series that really does deserve it.

And to anyone that is liking/loving Hinamatsuri anime, including you Mother's Basement, I can't recommend the manga enough. Seriously read it, and not like "just from where the anime ended" read all of it.
And my favorite character is Hina with flaws and all. Specially since I love her interactions with Nitta XD

I actually only heart about this show from this video, and stopped watching this video about a minute or so in just so I could go marathon the show. And I sure am glad I did. It very quickly became one of my favorite shows in recent memory.
Anzu and her story really tugged at my heart and I cried wholeheartedly multiple times during the conclusion of a lot of her scenes.
Coming back now to fully watch this video I love all the points you made and hope it'll help me convince others to give this show a watch.

Im so glad someone has covered hinamatsuri I have been thinking since I watched the first episode that this show is amazing and is the star of the season and I felt it was being left out I haven't loved a comedy anime that much since I watched konosuba

I was hoping you'd cover this series soon, Geoff. Glad to see it getting the promotion it deserves. As for best character, I'd probably go with Anzu so far. Her character arc was extremely touching.
I hated the trope of letting small misunderstandings take two to three episodes to clear up, but this show makes me forget about that because, like you said, it sticks the landing on the material because it knows how to be over the top while purposeful with it's message at the same time so it feels more real. I also related a lot to the 'being open with people' story, since I've become gunshy to much human interaction after getting broken up with enough times. XD
Hinamatsuri is perfect -- the greatest thing ever created. Anzu is a precious gem that I want to adopt. Hitomi is the hard-working, studious kid that I was that turned into the tired, cynical adult that I am currently.

“This may be a possible spoiler” Anzu is just the sweetest thing! She though she was going to be eliminated in one episode and she actually shouts out thanks to her adopted mom and dad for her wonderful life before awaiting her fate. Of course she doesn’t die, but you can see how much she cares about her new family by her actions. It turned really serious to really funny so fast.
