For the lazy dudes: 5 | Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water 4 | Now and Then Here and There 3 | World Conquest Zvezda Plot 2 | Scrapped Princess 1 | King of Bandit Jing
I mean in Japan the simpsons is an anime, literally only westerners fight over what is and isnt an anime, if its animated its an anime/cartoon simple as that
NADIA!!! Thank you for bringing about some recognition to this show, my local library had the first season on dvd and I used to watch it all the time! I'm glad others enjoy it as well!
belialpt i mean no matter how you look at it Avatar IS anime since anime is just animation so technically to the japanese south park is considered anime.. its only here in the west that we use the terms cartoon and anime separately but even then its a very loose definition.
“If you’ve seen digimon you know what to expect, rape murder and child abuse”. Me-uh what? I don’t remember that, I mean, I missed a season or two but...wtf?!
I still remember how surprised I was after the first couples of episodes of Now and Then, Here and There. I didn't know it was that brutal when I watched it, and I was legit blown away by how things go.
Personally I loved the show... it ended somber with a satisfying resolution... not everybody makes it out ok but that's fine as long as it was fun. and although the mc is a dumbass it is very fun to watch a shonen character get thrown into a world full of despair. Alot of people end up hating this show but i loved every second of it... truly a gem.
5. Nadia secret of blue water 4. Now and then here and there 3. World conquest zvesda plot 2. Scrapped princess 1. King of bandit jing Hopes this helps someone :)
+ 1000 for recommending *Scrapped Princess*. It was a great amazing series that I've always been disappointed that more reviewers haven't talked about.
I remember being disappointed by the series when it came out, but who knows... maybe I'd like it more now that 15 years have passed... >_> god I just realized how close I am to 30
i saw Zvezda & im glad i got convinced to watch it regardless of the obvious loli jailbait that gets thrown right at your face, because is absurdly fun
+artistafrustrado I always brushed off venera's costume as what a 10 year old would think a supervillain should look like, so it didn't bother me too much. It's very much in line with the themes of the show
+Mother's Basement I thought kids would just install more fancy add-ons until there's no more space left, so why would there still be skin exposure? I haven't watched yet btw
Yeah, same. It is great, but I was absolutely not prepared. Seeing it pop up on the list legit raised my heartbeat & caused me to break out in a nervous sweat. 😓
watch 12 kingdoms. Obscure but excellent Trapped In Another World plot. The fantasy of Being Rightful Champion of the Land is pulled down to reality with the heavy realization of responsibility. Themes of wounded people coming to terms with their action abound. Dense but rewarding political wushu
Edwin Hoover I am so glad you recommended this one! I was thinking the exact same thing and the only other person I have ever heard recommend it, is the friend that recommended it to me. Along with 12 Kingdoms, I would also recommend Ghost Hunt, which is probably better known since it came out on DVD by Funimation, but the light novels of both series were written by the same author.
Glad to see Now and Then Here and There listed. Brought back a lot of nostalgia for me when I saw that show 10+ years ago. WELL WORTH its salt to be on your list here.
Random Fun Fact: King of Bandit Jing was one of the six series that has been aired on russian TV channel MUZ-TV alongside Chobits, Chrono Crusade, Full Metal Panic!, Gungrave and Ikki Tousen (what a wierd combination) back in 2005-2006. They were the reason I got really hooked up on this whole anime thing and Jing actually got a pretty big following in Russian Anime Community (back then, right now it's a fucking cesspool). This series also was the origin of my favorite quote that I still use till this day: Jing: Haven't you heard that women, like wine, just get better with age? Kir: Sorry, but I prefer fresh grapes.
OMG! Thank you for recommending Scrapped Princess- made me so happy to see it on this list! I loved Scrapped Princess- it was one of my gateway animes- always bothered me that no one ever seemed to have watched it before. It's so good tho!
Hmmm I remember loving the early part of Scrapped Princess when things were left more ambiguous and heavy... like, is the prophecy real? Is it ok to keep living as the "poison that will destroy the world?" Is my life worth risking against the fate of the world either way? But then the (first?) big reveal happens and it seems like it strips away all that ambiguity. The prophecy is real, and it's a good thing for her to 'destroy' this world. Was it really worth watching after that point? IDK, I didn't like the look of where the series was going after that.
Oh yeah this was the first anime I ever watched the sub for out of curiosity. I like Jing's Japanese voice better than the English one, though the English one is still good. I can't stand stir's Japanese voice though XD
This is the first time i've seen this channel but the "Avatar the Last Airbender, which is an anime, fuck you fight me," earned you an auto subscribe. Bravo sir, bravo.
As someone said in the comments, Juuni Kokuki/ Twelve Kingdoms is also a very good anime for you guys who like fantasy. You only need to have the patience to get through the first episodes (the main character start as a very annoying girl but then gets really awesome - it's actually one of the best character developments out there). Sadly it never really 'ends'. There's a big part of the story left unexplored. You can always read the light novels but it's not the same thing Still, one of the best fantasy animes in my opinion. I actually went after Scrapped Princess because someone said it had a similiar feeling, but yeah, no.
Beatriz This is true. I've watched Twelve Kingdoms and at first I thought that its boring because of the long narratice and stubborn lead. But the story is so good :)
12 Kingdoms is great, better in the novels though, If I were to suggest a place to stop watching the anime it would be after episode 39 (if memory is right) since the last 6 episodes is a mess, with the studio trying to alter that arc to include the Tv series main character even though she's not the main character of that arc. ^^'
It was definitely around. The comparison to Kino's Journey is apt but it isn't as pensive. If you watch and enjoy, check out the 3 episode OVA Seventh Heaven, which is in some ways a precursor to Kon's Paprika.
If Avatar can be considered anime (i.e. subject to be recommended in this kind of list) I'd put forth the French series Wakfu / Dofus (Treasures of Kerub / new movies). I love the fantasy world Ankama created for these series and even though I dislike the game, the animation in the shows is very, very nice. Its probably one of my favorite fantasy series and it hits a lot of style points that I like -- bright colors, deeply fantastical setting, interesting mix of 3D and 2D visuals, great character designs, background art and special effects animation and awesome dragons. Who doesn't love dragons? Amazingly, Wakfu was almost entirely animated in FLASH of all things. It shows in some of the animation occasionally, but it didn't really detract from the visual style that much for me. Rather, its like they adapted to Flash and pushed it to its limits. Wakfu has two seasons with a third coming in 2017, and after successful Kickstarter campaigns to dub both seasons in English, I think its available on DVD/Blu-Ray (though very rare) and streaming on Netflix. The new Dofus movie, "Julith" is available on Steam, of all places. Heck, they even collaborated with Madhouse to make two movies (Noximilien l'Horloger and The Legend of Ogrest). Frankly the argument over what's "anime" or not is kinda silly at this point with worldwide studio cross-pollination becoming a thing.
Neither of them are anime. Anime=animated series/movie from japan (or eastern asia if you want to be a bit more generous). Every other definition would lead to TONS of cartoons, marvel/dc/disney stuff also being anime or a lot of anime not being anime anymore.
This will be my last comment here on this video, cause i'm not here to argue. I'm just here to state facts. Wakfu is anime. If the creators call what they make anime, then it's anime. If we went with the definition you stated, then that would mean if the creators of spongebob moved to Japan, and made spongebob, then spongebob would be anime... Since anime is a noticeable style, anything matching this style format should be considered anime. Also honestly, i wouldn't mind if some disney things are called anime. Afterall, Donald Duck is the reason for the manga/anime art style. Look it up xD
RareTV so if the creators of lord of the rings would call it anime it would be one? Or to take your example, if the creators of spongebob would call it an anmie, then it would be one? By that definition anything can be an anime and there would be no difference between cartoons and animes. You dont become japanese by moving to japan. So no, if the creators went to japan, it wouldnt become an anime. But if the vast majority of episodes were directed by japanese, than it would be one (and when im talking about japanese, i dont mean migrants). There is no specific anime style. Aku no hana is completely different than one piece, which is completely different than kemonozume, which is completely different tha panty and stocking etc. So yeah, both of the points you stated are simply wrong. There is no technical meaning like specific art style, themes or anything like that to the term "anime". Its simply a regional thing. Its the same as with manga/comics (/manwha and all that other stuff).
Thank you so much for bringing Now and then, here and there to my attention with this video. I just finished it today and it has become one of my favourite shows. It is so well done, my only complaints are the one dimensional villain and hero (Which it kinda' works in this case because his viewpoints are constantly challenged) and the short duration, one or two more episodes would have done wonders for the show as the ending felt a bit rushed.
MOTHER FUCKING JING! JING! I FUCKING LOVE THAT SHOW! HOLY SHIT JING! GETTING SOME LOVE! HOLY FUCK THAT ART DESIGN! READ THE MANGA! WHY ISN'T TWILIGHT TALES ADAPTED? HOLY FUCK JING! FUCKING JING! I THOUGHT i WAS THE ONLY ONE! Funny Story: All my anime DVD's were stolen during a break in, including my Jing ones, 10 years later, I walk into a local second hand DVD store to browse their selection and I see all 4 volumes, I joke that they must've been mine from back then, the clerk laughs and we get the boxes complete with inserts... the inserts... have my notes from art class scribbled on them... after 10 years... I got reunited with my DVD's. The guys at the shop let me have them for free when I explained the story (they were selling for like £1.50 each so no big deal) but it meant the world to me.
Must say that I'm so glad to see someone recommend "Now & Then, Here & There", because it's been one of my all time favorite anime for so many years. Also, kudos for bringing up "Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water". From the list, I'm specially interested on "Scrapped Princess", at least you have make it sound fabulous
I'm so glad you added Scrapped Princess! That's the one that I consider a hidden gem. Have you seen Jyu Ou Sei? That's one I really enjoyed and few know about it. The animations really outdated now though.
5 FANTASTIC Fantasy Anime You (Probably) Missed but Bites the Dust is activated and instead its an analysis of the openigs from Diamond is Unbreakable.
Clam Jam 5 FANTASTIC Fantasy anime you (probably) missed but King Crimson gets activated and it turns into a DiU opening analysis by skipping time but not quite so it just works.
I loved LoLH. I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves. It really needs more seasons. also I'm pretty sure that Ryners strain of Alpha Stigma is perhaps one of the most OP abilities I've seen in any anime. #Englishdubwasbetter
It will go down in the history books as one of the greatest 'what ifs'. I think that, if done right, it could've been up there with FMA or Code Geass. There was so much wasted potential that could've been capitalized on with another season. :(
I have to thank italian television's almost overwhelming everyday children programming blocks between the late 1970s and late 2000s for making me discover "Nadia - Secret of Blue Water", because it has always been one of my favorite series of all times, and for years I longed for a home video version (because Mediaset only produced a series of VHS in the early '90s), but thankfully Yamato Video is there to help.
Now that I think of it indeed it doesn't. I only learned of it through a couple of obscure recommendation on some blog, even though it's ranked #653 by popularity on MAL. That's a good 200 places above Zvezda (NTHT and Scrapped Princess follow at around 1000-1100) and about 1300+ above the truly-unpopular Nadia and Jing.
How dare you claim I don't care about King of Bandits Jing, which I watched about eight years ago and have been suggesting to all my friends and have lent out my DVD set to several of them, and read as many of the manga as I could find... OK, I'm guessing you get the idea, I really liked that one
I am so glad Chaika got a mention at least, but now I really do wanna watch Scrapped Princess. I have been looking at it every so often and gotten curious but now I really want to watch it so badly.
Shinsekai Yori (which constantly gets thrown under the yuri/yaoi banner which is a gross misunderstanding of the show), Sora no Woto, and Kemono no Souja Erin
I don't even remember the last time I commented on a youtube video, but holy shit thanks for that comment on Kemono no Souja Erin. By the same author as Seirei no Moribito? Must watch!
You are one of the most articulate and eloquent speakers i have found here on youtube. Its evident you're a writer and your extensive use of vocabulary is refreshing. You definitely sold these few shows and i look forward to checking a few out
Thanks for not spoiling Scrapped Princess. It is also one of my recommendations for obscure anime. Trying to think of others: Those Who Hunt Elves - Fairly popular but now forgotten Kemono no Sōja Erin- Definitely one for this list Dragon Half OVA - Obscure, but worth a look I know there are more, but I can't think of them right now.
Probably because it's a boxing anime. Sports anime in general don't tickle the fancy of the modern audience. It's like slice-of-life, but even more character-driven rather than plot driven.
As amusing as the bad 90's dub for Nadia is, it only goes for like 9 episodes......The dub produced in the early 00's however is pretty good imho. A little rough early on a they used actual children for the leads, and Jean's accent is iffy at best early on, it really does grow on you.
And even then he really only struggles with it in the first handful of eps. Otherwise I think people tend to over look the dub, real dimaon the rough imho.
How can Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water be considered a hidden gem? It was one of the first anime I've ever seen, back in my college days. And I'm pretty sure that it was quite popular back in the day, esp. since it was directed by Hideaki Anno. Is it just too old now that many younger anime fans haven't ever heard of it? But wouldn't younger fans of Hideaki Anno's more recent works (such as Evangelion) look up his previous works?
@@antonyshannon2276 I agree. The dub of NADIA by ADV is very underrated. It's far superior to the Streamline dub. As far as Jean's accent goes, while I did have a bit of trouble with it, he grew on me after the first four episodes. By midway, he really got the hang of it.
I discovered Jing the King of Bandits' manga first in my High-School Library's comics section along with Batman: Death and the Maidens, Hulk: Nightmerica, The Runaways, Prince of Tennis, Baby Steps, and Slam Dunk. Since I had just finished watching D. N. Angel I couldn't help draw parallels between the two since they both dealt with supernatural thieves and both had shapeshifting pets.
"If you ever listened to me talk for more than ten minutes, then you know I love it when fantasy series explain how their magic systems work." Have you read/listened to any of Brandon Sanderson's work? Or Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind? I know your deal is anime, but those books are my favorite as far as magic in fiction goes and their worldbuilding is impeccable. Both authors follow a rule that I think most popular fantasy ignores: "an author's ability to solve conflicts with magic is directly proportional to how well the reader understands said magic." In other words, no weird deus ex machinas are allowed. Brandon Sanderson is known as the Magic and worldbuilding guy. In all his series, he works his magic into every facet of the world that you'd think is relevant and even some you wouldn't, from the economy to the various religions. He explains them well BEFORE the cool thing happens so you're left impressed by the characters' cleverness rather than confused as to what just happened. And, of course, the magic is heckin' cool. I recommend the Mistborn series or the Stormlight Archive. Warbreaker is a good stand alone book, and the Reckoners series is a superhero story, though that one is not set in his shared Cosmere universe like most of his books are. Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle is the same. He has literal formulas that his magic adheres to. His books are about to be adapted to film, TV, and video games with the music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, so I highly recommend checking those out to stay ahead of the culture curve :)
Those are my two favorite authors. Well, maybe one author- as far as I can tell Patrick Rothfuss isn't interested in finishing the Kingkiller Chronicles (formerly Kingkiller Trilogy lol I think he bit off more than her could chew)... WHERE IS MY "DOORS OF STONE", ROTHFUSS YOU CRUEL CRUEL BASTARD?!?
Stopping right now to write this comment before finishing the rest of the this video. Holy crap, first anime youtuber I've ever seen bring up Now and Then Here and There, that show amazed me when I first discovered it on VHS in Blockbuster (yeah aging myself). 10/10 just for knowing this thing existed
Euphoria is child's play! Try Kowaku no Toki. That one is some sick stuff. You have everything you'd ever want in one show... including cannibalism. Have fun.
Poon Tzia Yu Bitch no anime/hentai can even get half as fucked up as Visual Novels. Trust me I have watched lots of missed up hentai and read lots of missed up Visual Novels and if your mind is not ready then RIP
fantastic memorable music, a mysterious fun and extremely cool main duo and stories that I still remember today with nostalgia. I picked up king of bandits jing at new York comic con and it sits on my shelf with much love today. definitely deserved the top spot here :) I wish there was a sequel of the show bc it deserves it.
Your next what's in an op should be Bungo stray dogs season 2 Drifters Haikyuu Keijo Or how about the jojo DiU ops, I mean they are the best ops in the series
the DiU OPs would be a great way to end the year, it'd be nice to see your thoughts on the part 4 adaptation too since I thought I heard somewhere part 4's your favourite part.
Bungou Stray Dogs Season 2 had a rather meh OP (unless we're talking about what it was like during the Dark Era eps). Now, it's ED. That's another story entirely. The ED was just chock full of meaning.
OOoh man someone else actually listed this show. In my life, it's been a rare thing, no one I knew has even heard of this. Now and Then Here and There is that anime I hold with the category, it's so good and so visceral, I love/hated it. Like a few movies that hit so hard in the heart that I can really only watch once or maybe every few years due to the punch it gives. That story was great, it made you feel and fear. Thank you for such the accurate description and recommendation.
*HERE'S ANOTHER GREAT ONE THAT YOU WILL BE SHOCKED IS GOOD! This one is a TRUE hidden gem, not only is it not well known, it has a stupid title and on the surface just looks like huge fan service!* First I want to preface this that I am SUPER picky with my anime. The smallest flaws bother me relentlessly to the point where I hate so many well loved shows. I hate fanservice and I praise good writing with a consistent world. I found this show LITERALLY trying to find bad anime to watch while I'm writing. I cannot stress enough how high my standards are for writing, worldbuilding, story and theme are for liking a show, and I LOVE this show. The show is called: Junketsu no Maria (Maria the Virgin Witch) Okay so on the surface this show is fanservice forgettable garbage. BUT I SWEAR THERE'S SO MUCH MORE! First of all this a show that MOST accurately portrays medieval warfare, even more than early Berserk. But HERE is the thing people miss about that show that's so special. *P H I L O S O P H Y* This show takes place in a world were biblical god is real. I don't mean cool guy god like in some bullshit show. I mean ANGRY VENGEFUL SMITING EMOTIONLESS GOD. It explores the ramifications of that fact as well as true morality juxtaposed to religious conviction complete with crisis's of faith in the most fantastically unique way I've ever seen. I cannot recommend this show enough, this is TRULY a hidden gem, it even hides itself behind it's stupid name and MASSIVE fanservice!
Nadia was one of my very first anime, and remains one of my favourites to this day, congratulations on getting yourself a subscribe for being one of the few anime TH-camrs who seems to know that this amazing anime even exists!
i saw now and then here and now when you recommended it during your Halloween weebcast. i have to say i enjoyed it very much and it will check out the rest in this video
I always believed Verena's skimpy outfit was meant to show the contrast between her apparent physical age and her "actual" age. Much the same way Mina Tepes is often seen full or partially nude in Dance in the Vampire Bund. Both characters look and often act like children, but in reality, they are very old and their innocent child act is just that....an act. Yeah, in some part it's Loli Fanservice, but anime almost always includes metaphorical symbolism like this in some manner.
Trust me there are no skeevy shots or depictions that try to sexualize an underage girl. Even the transformation sequence which is usually sexual ends up being adorable. Zvezda's transformation is literally just her getting dressed by her minions like how a mom dresses her kids up for halloween. Also smokers are literally soulless beings.
Thank you for listing so many already-popular shows that I've missed! And then quickly explaining why they dont make your list. This is the "good shows most of us missed" video, afterall. Everyone has seen FMA.
Thank you, i'll make sure to check these. I'd like a list of good medieval fantasy anime. The RPG type of fantasy, like Gedo Senki, Tales of Phantasia and the awesome Record of Lodoss War. It seems to me that this genre is little explored.
Known, huh? Could have fooled me. The ONLY people who've so much as mentioned Slayers on TH-cam is WatchMojo...and I think we all know what the popular opinion is regarding them. Either way, whether or not something is actually known is heavily dependent on the person in question. Even I've heard of the last 2 on his list
Slayers characters have been popping up in Granblue fantasy though... that said, when I tried to get a friend into it they didn't watch past the first 10 episodes though I think its because they are more into sci-fi.
Well who outside of Japan would actually be familiar with Granblue Fantasy? And regardless if they prefer Sci-Fi or not, I suspect it has more to do with Slayers not possessing the typical shonen elements "popular" anime are praised for. DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc... Not that I'm surprised. It started in 89
5. Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water (1:05) 4. Now and Then Here and There (4:38) 3. World Conquest Zvezda Plot (6:50) 2. Scrapped Princess (10:37) 1. King of Bandit Jing (14:31)
If you like when fantasy explains their magic systems, I would definitely recommend reading a book by Brandon Sanderson. Yeah its not anime, but that doesn't mean it isn't absolutely amazing.
If Avatar is an anime then anime doesn't mean anything and shouldn't be used as the word. Anime isn't an artstyle, visual style, story elements, story structure or directing style (which by the way Avatar draws more from the West in all regards minus the visual style). It should refer to animation produced in Japan for Japanese audiences because otherwise it becomes so broad as to be indistinguishable from the larger medium it belongs to, animation.
My question is, why do you watch anime? Is it because it was made by and for Japanese audiences or because of visual style, directing style, and story elements? Wouldn't deciding if something is an anime off of everything else you mentioned help way more as a defining term?
In psychology, there's a theory of categorization of human thought called prototype theory (and it's generally pretty accepted). Something is perceived as belonging to a larger class of things when it shares enough features with most members of the class. For example, a robin is a really easy to identify member of the "bird" class of things. So a robin would be a prototypical example of a bird. But a penguin would be a lot harder to confirm or deny as a member, since it doesn't share a lot of the features we normally attribute to birds, e.g., "can fly, has feathers, eats seeds, etc." But it shares the essential features like "descended from the same ancestors, has a beak, lays eggs, etc." I feel that (given that animation is often done in Korea, and animators are increasingly aware of their international audience) the features you mentioned are not necessary, but simply "the norm" for anime. Avatar shares enough features with the prototypical anime that it could reasonably be considered one.
it's actually pronounced "EH-OO-REH-KAH", based off the japanese pronunciation of the greek saying of the word. perhaps, the "EH" is a bit subtle to others' hearing...? EDIT: small correction
Warpdroid Eureka is the name of the main girl. Her name is pronounced “Eh-oh-rek-uh”. The series is pronounced the same way. He's pronouncing it exactly as it's supposed to be.
nope, not at all. Or at least I don't think so, it certainly is set up the same way though, and the main character is as shonen as it gets, but not the rest of the show. P.s. As I write this I realise that your comment was written 8 months ago; so my answer is probably irrelevant, but in case you haven't watched it I'll post it anyways.
Absolutely not. It is gloriously messed up, depressing, and all around stellar series that is really good at throwing you for a loop with that plot twist (the world he lands into).
I love King of Bandit Jing! No one ever talks about it, so imagine my surprise to see it on this list. The manga had even crazier art and stories that never got animated.
I remember now and than here and there as a kid like 15 years ago when it was still coming out. that show is just something else. be ready for some real dark and horrible themes. I didn't even comprehend how brutal it was until re-watching it when i was older. just be ready for some heavy stuff
I watched Scrapped Princess because of this list. It's an anime I've been aware of for a while now, but I finally got around to actually watching it. It was incredible - thanks MB!
In the into, what is the name of the second anime we see? The art, the color of the line art, the texture in the color, it's so gorgeous. If somebody can help me out, it would be great. :)
I love it. The pacing is excellent, a bit slow but aloud beautiful moment. The character are so nicely developed. The action/animation is also amazing. It was a really great discovery. :D
0boy0man yea they were and Disney did a movie version of that decades before either movie or anime was written but the mystic brown skinned heroine was shared by both of the later works.
holy shit that black chick with the purple hair is an actual anime character? I thought she was made up when I saw that hentai of her and Naruto getting it on
I hope not, because besides "Here and there, then and now" I saw all of these shows characters in hentai YEARS ago and had no idea they were actually from something until today o-o
It WAS made by the director who ared to make a live action Cutey Honey, yet he did direct famous scene from End of Evangelion, and even reprised in his live action film Love and Pop, so make of that what you will

Wouldn’t say lazy just want the info without the bull shit
This comment is just to remind myself to avoid Nadia episodes 23 through 35
I will NEVER forget Now and Then, Here and There. It's traumatizing. Strong and marvelous.
when it ended i know ill never miss it. never really get immersed in it because of the way the adventure shifted from devastating desert to an oasis.
Amazing hidden gem. Just brilliant.
Its painful but beautiful
Painful but extremely good
My new favourite quote of the year:
"Avatar the Last Airbender, Which is an anime, fuck you fight me."
-Mother's Basement
Mr Gems Yess!!! now I can leave 2016, not fully disappointed
I disliked instantly after that.
The Last Airbender is a cartoon, just like every single anime in existence.
I mean in Japan the simpsons is an anime, literally only westerners fight over what is and isnt an anime, if its animated its an anime/cartoon simple as that
Dwarf Show cartoons are called anime in japan
NADIA!!! Thank you for bringing about some recognition to this show, my local library had the first season on dvd and I used to watch it all the time! I'm glad others enjoy it as well!
I actually watched Now and Then Here and There... and yes the anime will stay with you
"Avatar which is an anime. Fuck you, fight me." Most quotable line.
Mother's Basement 2016
It's probably a nice quote, yeah, because he is wrong ^^
*Airhorns*
he said "Avatar which Isn't an anime."
belialpt i mean no matter how you look at it Avatar IS anime since anime is just animation so technically to the japanese south park is considered anime.. its only here in the west that we use the terms cartoon and anime separately but even then its a very loose definition.
I'm pretty sure he said it is an anime
Bee movie is my favorite obscure fantasy hentai.
IN ALL CAPS
fuck bees
Wtf
tony solorio It's very hip.
beastiality lol
C Vox you mean beestiality
“If you’ve seen digimon you know what to expect, rape murder and child abuse”.
Me-uh what? I don’t remember that, I mean, I missed a season or two but...wtf?!
I still remember how surprised I was after the first couples of episodes of Now and Then, Here and There. I didn't know it was that brutal when I watched it, and I was legit blown away by how things go.
+Agustín Santamarianova the jump from episode 1 to episode 2 is very much "that escalated quickly - the show"
I watched it all in one sitting back in high school. I was dead inside for a few weeks.
Agustín Santamarianova just watched it all I can say is wow
Personally I loved the show... it ended somber with a satisfying resolution... not everybody makes it out ok but that's fine as long as it was fun. and although the mc is a dumbass it is very fun to watch a shonen character get thrown into a world full of despair. Alot of people end up hating this show but i loved every second of it... truly a gem.
That show gets really dark really quickly and it left me going...well okay then.
You are without a doubt one of the most respectable anime reviewers on TH-cam
5. Nadia secret of blue water
4. Now and then here and there
3. World conquest zvesda plot
2. Scrapped princess
1. King of bandit jing
Hopes this helps someone :)
Add xam lost memories that has only problem in distribution of anime unless it is good
Someone has already done it and he’s the first comment.
It's very much in line with the themes of the show
oh yeah that becomes really evident the moment you watch the show. & that internal logic is why i could ignore the jailbait & enjoy the show
You should try watching the coyote ragtime show. Its more scifi than anything else, but i love the characters and the story is also solid.
+Mother's Basement I thought kids would just install more fancy add-ons until there's no more space left, so why would there still be skin exposure? I haven't watched yet btw
Men are we going to see a Weebcast of The Best and Worst anime of 2016 please?
Now and Then, Here and There had me shook. I watched the entire thing because a friend recommended it, and I honestly don't think I could do it again.
Jade Gibeaut Same here. It still haunts me after all these years. Great anime, though, but what an ordeal!
Yeah, same. It is great, but I was absolutely not prepared. Seeing it pop up on the list legit raised my heartbeat & caused me to break out in a nervous sweat. 😓
You too?
It fucked me up when I was young. Just like grave of the fireflies.
Same here I won't recommend it thou. Of course I'm not saying it's bad by any means
watch 12 kingdoms. Obscure but excellent Trapped In Another World plot. The fantasy of Being Rightful Champion of the Land is pulled down to reality with the heavy realization of responsibility. Themes of wounded people coming to terms with their action abound. Dense but rewarding political wushu
Only problem is the series finishes before the main plotline is wrapped up and we have never got a second season.
yeah, one of my faves too, and still waiting for another season. Even the books are not finished yet, I heard.
^ Best fantasy series in anime
Edwin Hoover I am so glad you recommended this one! I was thinking the exact same thing and the only other person I have ever heard recommend it, is the friend that recommended it to me. Along with 12 Kingdoms, I would also recommend Ghost Hunt, which is probably better known since it came out on DVD by Funimation, but the light novels of both series were written by the same author.
Edwin Hoover bahaha! 😂
do you ever think that maybe one day he'll be rich enough to leave his mother's basement?
Naaah
All hail the tsundere no
That will only happen when Cory in The House is recognized as the best animu of all time.
Oh wait...
GuiderMaster1 lol no fgt construction videos from the 80's is better
When he hits his goal on patreon, probably
This series also was the origin of my favorite quote that I still use till this day:
Jing: Haven't you heard that women, like wine, just get better with age?
Kir: Sorry, but I prefer fresh grapes.
"Which is an anime, fuck you, fight me"
*Immediately likes the video*
Gregory Allen Turner II wow. i did that o.o
OMG! Thank you for recommending Scrapped Princess- made me so happy to see it on this list! I loved Scrapped Princess- it was one of my gateway animes- always bothered me that no one ever seemed to have watched it before. It's so good tho!
yup; agreed; trust the guy in the basement, watch the show :)
Fuck yeah mah boi Jing is getting some spotlight.
*High fives* FUCKING JING! FUCK YEAH!
Panda Cat seriously though. didnt even know it was an anime but been reading the manga since i was a kid. so great.
Panda Cat Jing Anime sucks dick compared to the manga. I hate to be that guy, but it's so true. Twilight Tales is the bomb.
I agree with everything in this comment string. I usually don't even like manga.
You can always read the light novels but it's not the same thing
Still, one of the best fantasy animes in my opinion. I actually went after Scrapped Princess because someone said it had a similiar feeling, but yeah, no.
Beatriz This is true. I've watched Twelve Kingdoms and at first I thought that its boring because of the long narratice and stubborn lead. But the story is so good :)
Beatriz 12 Kingdoms is my ultimate favorite fantasy anime. My only regret is that it ended because the lore behind it is so immense
Yeah, I was like where the fuck is Twelve Kingdoms! It's an epic fantasy anime!
@@StoneTitan yeah last 6 was then trying to bound into a new arc but they didn't commit after
Holy shit, I have NEVER seen anyone mention Bandit King Jing in my life!
JING! Have you read the Manga? You should read that Manga: The art... literally that art. Especially in the Twilight Tales series....
Twilight Tales was so good! Easily some of my favorite heists from the bunch
I NEVER thought I'd see him mention the King of Bandits, thats crazy
It was definitely around. The comparison to Kino's Journey is apt but it isn't as pensive. If you watch and enjoy, check out the 3 episode OVA Seventh Heaven, which is in some ways a precursor to Kon's Paprika.
omg i loved jing so much! i really didnt expect it to be on the list. so much nostalgia!
Frankly the argument over what's "anime" or not is kinda silly at this point with worldwide studio cross-pollination becoming a thing.
yeah, wakfu is anime as well
Neither of them are anime.
Inufan75 you would be wrong it's a western thing to think anime is Japan only www.etymonline.com/word/anime
So yeah wakfu is anime
+RellikInProfile man, that's a heartwarming end to a sad story
You should stake out that store and try to catch the robber
Wait, MORE PEOPLE BESIDES ME WATCHED/READ JING?! COLOR ME SURPRISED.
XD Same here
Literally everyone I have met has never seen it, and I always try to get them to watch it.
Oh, yes. A new Mother's Basement upload! Also, Nadia is a classic!
hy ku Fucking lol no I just need something to entertain me right now lmao.
I literally watched that show just because my real name is Nadia 😂😂
and now I know where you live nadia. I will see you shortly
dressed as a clown. with a 2x4 and some bil cosby specials to boot. >;P
Trails In The Sky music at the beginning .....yes I am ready.
whenever i get a notification from mother's basement i drop what im doing and start watching
+couldntgetagoodusername I love that you do this but I really hope you're not a pilot or surgeon
Mother's Basement
Ha ha...
No...
I'm just electrician.
Mother's Basement funny enough im taking premed courses...
I'm so glad you added Scrapped Princess! That's the one that I consider a hidden gem.
Have you seen Jyu Ou Sei? That's one I really enjoyed and few know about it. The animations really outdated now though.
Record of Lodoss War OVA is a nice one as well... especially for people who play Tabletop games...
Yeah but its also pretty well known
Since it came out in the 90s I would argue that many don't know of it, especially the younger people around here
Demiurge13 i would argue the younger people dont know of it. But anyone in their mid to late 20's and older should know of it.
Okay, Jeff. Have you already seen Princess Tutu?
Louis Cohn I think he's talked about it before, can't remember where.
I watched Scrapped Princess many years ago, while I barely remember the plot and characters, but I do remember being fond of the show.
I watched all of them even though I didn't watch the video
hy ku Congratulations, you have achieved anime connosieur level my friend, continue down this path and soon you'll be weeb master.
Snob reference?
Wee the man I am XXX_weeb_god_xXx
Aydarus Hassan no
Aydarus Hassan just me being a weeb master
5 FANTASTIC Fantasy Anime You (Probably) Missed but Bites the Dust is activated and instead its an analysis of the openigs from Diamond is Unbreakable.
+Clam Jam doesn't quite make sense for Kira but I may use that for d4c
Men are we going to see a Weebcast of The Best and Worst anime of 2016 please?
Clam Jam 5 FANTASTIC Fantasy anime you (probably) missed but King Crimson gets activated and it turns into a DiU opening analysis by skipping time but not quite so it just works.
Legit had someone loose their shit when i called Avatar an anime. You sir just got a sub.
legend of the legendary heroes anyone?
anyone?
no?
God, I love that shit, I wish there were more episodes, Ryner is by far my favorite protagonist
it been ages since I have seen it but I really liked the show but that ending...
I loved LoLH. I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves. It really needs more seasons.
also I'm pretty sure that Ryners strain of Alpha Stigma is perhaps one of the most OP abilities I've seen in any anime. #Englishdubwasbetter
that anime fucked with my soul :/
It will go down in the history books as one of the greatest 'what ifs'. I think that, if done right, it could've been up there with FMA or Code Geass. There was so much wasted potential that could've been capitalized on with another season. :(
I've watched Now and Then, Here and There and I'm so happy to see it here. One of the best anime ever made.
Efren Arevalo I know right, so few people seem to talk about it nowadays. Which is a real shame.
Zvezda is pronounced ,Zviz-da
russian word for star
GrassHopper Also Serbian word for star :)
Different pronunciations in the different slavic languages.
Его произношение Очень раздражающие
different in different Slavic languages and different in same language depending on the local dialect
many are similar but there are slavic languages which differ more from others to not being called a dialect or such
While not as obscure as the shows you've mentioned, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita does not get much talk. I strongly recommend it.
Looking For A Name I watched it and thought it was interesting but not great. Certainly better than its obscurity entails.
Rukia Shimazu , Scrapped Princess is awesome!
Shinsekai Yori (which constantly gets thrown under the yuri/yaoi banner which is a gross misunderstanding of the show), Sora no Woto, and Kemono no Souja Erin
Grant Poczekaj Shinsekai Yori is an underwatched and underrated masterpiece, it's not fantasy though :)
You definitely sold these few shows and i look forward to checking a few out
"Shannon is a... *guy* by the way" He says like it's something strange, to me... a guy... named Shannon.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Shannon
Yeah it's a unisex name innit?
anytime ive near that name it was always attached to a female. so it being unisex is surprising to me
Eh, Shannon Sharpe, famous NFL player, comes to mind. It's a unisex name, yup.
Shannon Olivas shannon briggs i dare you tell him that back in his heyday...😊
I remember nadia. God, that nostalgia keeps coming.
Thanks for not spoiling Scrapped Princess. It is also one of my recommendations for obscure anime.
Trying to think of others:
Those Who Hunt Elves - Fairly popular but now forgotten
Kemono no Sōja Erin- Definitely one for this list
Dragon Half OVA - Obscure, but worth a look
I know there are more, but I can't think of them right now.
0:43 Best line I've ever heard on TH-cam
Sesese Masondo no the best line was *AH AH AHA AH AH* from that one girl in hentai
All hail the tsundere true true
Please give a shot to Ashita no Joe. How ignored it is by the community is criminal
It wasnt when i started watching anime back in early 90s but things has chanced
Such a masterpiece.
Ash yea
Probably because it's a boxing anime.
Sports anime in general don't tickle the fancy of the modern audience. It's like slice-of-life, but even more character-driven rather than plot driven.
TheUltimoSniper you obviously haven't seen it then. You, like many take its genre and write it off. Hence why it's so criminally underrepresented
dude, best summary of the Nadia experience i've ever heard! Good job addressing the 'Island Episodes'. Seriously one of the best animated shows ever.
As amusing as the bad 90's dub for Nadia is, it only goes for like 9 episodes......The dub produced in the early 00's however is pretty good imho. A little rough early on a they used actual children for the leads, and Jean's accent is iffy at best early on, it really does grow on you.
+Antony Shannon yeah I agree. The awful fake French accent on Jean is the one sore spot
You know another anime that doesn’t get the love it deserves?
Darker
Then
Black
Why can I find you anywhere!?!?
Oh my god, YES. People might hate homeless Hei but the whole thing is GREAT
Ikr?! Nobody talks about this show, I can’t even remember how I stumbled upon it
The most I could find was Season 2 on Hulu. No season 1.
dropped it after like 5 eps
I discovered Jing the King of Bandits' manga first in my High-School Library's comics section along with Batman: Death and the Maidens, Hulk: Nightmerica, The Runaways, Prince of Tennis, Baby Steps, and Slam Dunk. Since I had just finished watching D. N. Angel I couldn't help draw parallels between the two since they both dealt with supernatural thieves and both had shapeshifting pets.

"If you ever listened to me talk for more than ten minutes, then you know I love it when fantasy series explain how their magic systems work."
Have you read/listened to any of Brandon Sanderson's work?
That trails in the sky soundtrack in the beginning! Another fan of the kiseki series!! Subscribed!
Mental fortitude to watch all of Euphoria is what's impressive
Poon Tzia Yu or just a really sick twisted mind....
Euphoria is child's play! Try Kowaku no Toki. That one is some sick stuff. You have everything you'd ever want in one show... including cannibalism. Have fun.
Poon Tzia Yu
Bitch no anime/hentai can even get half as fucked up as Visual Novels.
Trust me I have watched lots of missed up hentai and read lots of missed up Visual Novels and if your mind is not ready then RIP
Kay cool stories bro
Euphoria anime is fucking trash compared to VN. All the fucked up scenes hit much harder when there's actual story and character development involved.
fantastic memorable music, a mysterious fun and extremely cool main duo and stories that I still remember today with nostalgia. I picked up king of bandits jing at new York comic con and it sits on my shelf with much love today. definitely deserved the top spot here :) I wish there was a sequel of the show bc it deserves it.
Your next what's in an op should be
Bungo stray dogs season 2
Drifters
Haikyuu
Keijo
Or how about the jojo DiU ops, I mean they are the best ops in the series
+nabidiboy jones do you mean the new haikyuus? Because I've done two so far
the DiU OPs would be a great way to end the year, it'd be nice to see your thoughts on the part 4 adaptation too since I thought I heard somewhere part 4's your favourite part.
Bungou Stray Dogs Season 2 had a rather meh OP (unless we're talking about what it was like during the Dark Era eps). Now, it's ED. That's another story entirely. The ED was just chock full of meaning.
Is there anything to say about the Drifters OP ? It looks cool and has an awesome song but there is not much to analyze about. Everything is obvoius.
Mother's Basement i mean the 3rd season, cuz that op is godlike
OOoh man someone else actually listed this show. In my life, it's been a rare thing, no one I knew has even heard of this.
Now and Then Here and There is that anime I hold with the category, it's so good and so visceral, I love/hated it. Like a few movies that hit so hard in the heart that I can really only watch once or maybe every few years due to the punch it gives.
That story was great, it made you feel and fear. Thank you for such the accurate description and recommendation.
Have you seen Moribito?
Great series!! I enjoyed it immensely. Balsa is such a great character.
Oh boy, finally someone else who knows King of Bandits Jing.
Losteria I know right? That alone makes my day XD That show was a good chunk of my teens
me
I knew it too (and introduced it to my friends ;) )!
It was my childhood i used to watch it on the anime network but i was rather stupid and didnt understand the deeper implications
I saw Secret of the Blue Water in the thumbnail. SUBSCRIBED!!! This guy knows what he is talking about. Thanks!
*HERE'S ANOTHER GREAT ONE THAT YOU WILL BE SHOCKED IS GOOD! This one is a TRUE hidden gem, not only is it not well known, it has a stupid title and on the surface just looks like huge fan service!*
First I want to preface this that I am SUPER picky with my anime.
The show is called: Junketsu no Maria (Maria the Virgin Witch)
Okay so on the surface this show is fanservice forgettable garbage. BUT I SWEAR THERE'S SO MUCH MORE!
First of all this a show that MOST accurately portrays medieval warfare, even more than early Berserk. But HERE is the thing people miss about that show that's so special. *P H I L O S O P H Y*
This show takes place in a world were biblical god is real.
Wrath Is Me
nah that show was a bore. the characthers were uninteres
ting and the story was meh because they lacked execution.
tony solorio That... That doesn't even mean anything
Wrath Is Me
Its more than describing small pieces of a show that barely make up for the rest
tony solorio No, it;s not. What you said didn't even mean anything. How old are you? Nevermind, please stop replying.
Wrath Is Me
I'm saying your bringing the show to be more than what it actually is; when in actuality it's mediocre shlock.
have you ever watched Seirei no Moribito?
Fábio Moraes Guardian of the Spirit? Watch it about twice a year. It's wonderful.
Seirei no Moribito is one of my all-time favorites!!!
fire23fairy yeah that's a cool anime
Nadia was one of my very first anime, and remains one of my favourites to this day, congratulations on getting yourself a subscribe for being one of the few anime TH-camrs who seems to know that this amazing anime even exists!
Zvezda Plot: the loli is strong with this one.
(still, it looks pretty awesome!)
+etatoby yeah I think that squicked some people out. I always took venera's costume as what a little kid would think a supervillain should look like.
i saw now and then here and now when you recommended it during your Halloween weebcast. i have to say i enjoyed it very much and it will check out the rest in this video
+Michael Haney True. If a story doesn't have more than one interpretation (literal, allegorical, moral...) it's usually not worth reading or watching.
"Avatar The Last Airbender, which is an anime, fuck you, fight me"
-Mother's Basement, 2016
Thank you for listing so many already-popular shows that I've missed! And then quickly explaining why they dont make your list. This is the "good shows most of us missed" video, afterall. Everyone has seen FMA.
Thank you, i'll make sure to check these. I'd like a list of good medieval fantasy anime. The RPG type of fantasy, like Gedo Senki, Tales of Phantasia and the awesome Record of Lodoss War. It seems to me that this genre is little explored.
+Bruno Martins utawarerumono is a good example
Just don't check out the second season. It doesn't live up to it's predecessor.
And here I thought he'd mention Slayers... Guess even he missed that gem
Ace Hunter Blake but he said he won't mention "known" anime, and Slayer is already known even though it is old no?
It started in 89
Slayers is a classic gem from the 90s. Nothing about it is even remotely hidden.
5. Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water (1:05)
4. Now and Then Here and There (4:38)
3. World Conquest Zvezda Plot (6:50)
2. Scrapped Princess (10:37)
1. King of Bandit Jing (14:31)
Yassss, Scrapped Princess! Just don't read the novels, the translation had a shitton of typos.
Oh, but for Chaika, read the novels, the anime skips at least half of each novel.
No Lodoss Wars? Thats one of those hard fantasys where you can see the heavy inspirations from D&D.
But nobody missed that! And by todays standards its pacing is probably a bit to slow.
Amusingly, he used a clip from Legend of Korra as he referenced Avatar the Last Airbender.
It's the same universe, just like 50 years later
ew275x good choice in saying "produced in and for the japanese" because it tends to be Animated outside of japan... like avatar
But a penguin would be a lot harder to confirm or deny as a member, since it doesn't share a lot of the features we normally attribute to birds, e.g., "can fly, has feathers, eats seeds, etc." But it shares the essential features like "descended from the same ancestors, has a beak, lays eggs, etc."
I feel that (given that animation is often done in Korea, and animators are increasingly aware of their international audience) the features you mentioned are not necessary, but simply "the norm" for anime. Avatar shares enough features with the prototypical anime that it could reasonably be considered one.
"Oorekka Seven"
...dude, why do you not know how to pronounce so many words?
That's how they pronounce it in the show. He's pronouncing it right.
it's actually pronounced "EH-OO-REH-KAH", based off the japanese pronunciation of the greek saying of the word. perhaps, the "EH" is a bit subtle to others' hearing...?
EDIT: small correction
Yeah, the first syllable should rhyme with "hay". Other than that, the rest of his pronunciation is correct.
Warpdroid Eureka is the name of the main girl. Her name is pronounced “Eh-oh-rek-uh”. The series is pronounced the same way. He's pronouncing it exactly as it's supposed to be.
Its pronounced with a silent "E" in the series. He's just replicating that. It comes of as oo-rek-ah in the series.
I'm honestly so happy you included Now and Then Here and There
I have a hard time remember names, if you could write them down in the discretion that would help.
Vilver II *description
Vilver II that is what the pause function is for 😜
And with all the advances in technology people still want others to wipe their ass for them. Takes notes and figure out how to help yourself bud
....So Now and Then, Here and There in fact is NOT the supergeneric shonen schlock I was led to believe from every other summary ever?
nope, not at all.
Can you do a video like this for sci fi?
Apparently yes
I watched Scrapped Princess because of this list. It's an anime I've been aware of for a while now, but I finally got around to actually watching it. It was incredible - thanks MB!
In the into, what is the name of the second anime we see? The art, the color of the line art, the texture in the color, it's so gorgeous. If somebody can help me out, it would be great. :)
Emi Kawaii Doodle Grimgar of fantasy and Ash is the name of the anime.
Thanks for helping. :D
Emi Kawaii Doodle You welcome, is a pleasure to help.
+Emi Kawaii Doodle Grimgar is one of my favs. Im guessing by now you watched it,right? What do you think?
I love it. The pacing is excellent, a bit slow but aloud beautiful moment. The character are so nicely developed. The action/animation is also amazing. It was a really great discovery. :D
Disney totally ripped off "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water"
when they produced "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" (2001).
That wouldn't be their first time, either. Heard of Kimba the White Lion?
I am well aware of the Kimba / Lion King controversy.
actually it was based on an idea by Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy) but to think ideas may have been borrowed is not a long shot at all
I thought they both were inspired by the book "20,000 Leagues under the Sea". That's a classic published in 1871.
0boy0man yea they were and Disney did a movie version of that decades before either movie or anime was written but the mystic brown skinned heroine was shared by both of the later works.
Holy shit, im so happy you mentioned now and then here and there, one of my fav anime. Thank you!
holy shit that black chick with the purple hair is an actual anime character? I thought she was made up when I saw that hentai of her and Naruto getting it on
Yup, it was an anime that aired in 1990.
Thank god I wasn't the only one!
was looking for someone to mention this
Telzen God is already dead and humanity killed him with porn
TMI
So I noticed Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World) isn't on this list.
Too popular for the list? Did you not like/know about it?
way too popular..is one of the best from that year
And more si-fi i think
Just watched Zvezda, loved it. Thanks for the rec, would never have found it otherwise
King of Bandit Jin doesn't need an over-arching plot. It was just fun to watch.
Agreed
is it bad I know Nadia from hentai? that be like find out about Scooby doo from the porno.
kyle hague
lol she was my first boner so no shame :3
Nah
I hope not, because besides "Here and there, then and now" I saw all of these shows characters in hentai YEARS ago and had no idea they were actually from something until today o-o
Excuse me for a moment, but I have a darkskin fetish I need to tend to.
It WAS made by the director who ared to make a live action Cutey Honey, yet he did direct famous scene from End of Evangelion, and even reprised in his live action film Love and Pop, so make of that what you will
happy to have seen all these. :) I'm always on the lookout for these kinds of shows that probably slipped under everyone's radar.
"zvezdA" is a "star" in Russian so is there any connection with Russian culture there?
Smutnovsor iirc each of the main characters has a nickname which is basically a somewhat fitting russian word (like Plamya for the eyepatch girl)
