Building the 23' V-Bottom Skiff - Episode 5: Installing the chines

  • Our V-Bottom skiff is really starting to take shape and this week is a big moment because we're installing the chines. You remember we sourced these at the lumber mill and then processed them in my front yard and now they're going in the boat. The chines are very important pieces in the boat and that why we went through a lot of trouble to get just the right lumber. They need to be fit inside the bottom plank and up against the stem in the bow and then bent inboard back aft until they can clear the transom and then bend back against the back of the plank. We have to be very precise here so we don't cut them too short. We also want to take a moment to bevel the forward end of the chine to accept the bottom planking and that needs to be done off the boat because it would be hard to work on in position without damaging other parts of the boat.

I have no knowledge of boat building and really don't see myself getting into it, BUT it is so much fun to watch a superb craftsman
work. Your narrating each and every step is fascinating and watching your expertise and to see the superior result of your efforts is very gratifying....most fun to watch!!

When you are working the fronts of your chine logs Lou, I have a way that would simplify your life. Your using your small blick plant to get the right angle for your chines up front; however your block plane doesn't allow you to plane that inner angle to make it perfect. You need a two cherries v plane in order to gain access to the very inner corner of your chines. They can have the side laid down against the angle in your chine on either side to get the desired firment you need. Or, you can do the lower inner side one way and the upper outer side the other way to get the chine perfectly matched for the cut already created from before. As a past master Carpenter I knew what you needed. I could see what you needed do e well before it was revealed.
    LOU,
I would like to find out what it would cost me to have such a boat builtin the 28' length that is on a triple axle trailer, has a composting toilet, a couple 100lb propane bottles to provide a stove and nice sized oven & have a large enough capacity to a nice size stay on the wather nut everyone worked together to make it an adventure. The boat will be for heavy fishing conditions in Lake Erie dm
I am the monster that fishes the sloppy stuff. I need a strong motor, a tough windshield and side panels for the windows to keep water out. I am thinking 2 - 175 or 2- 225 horse Suzuki units.
Can you let me know what such a boat made by you would have a ball park figure would be. I'm looking for a very fun fishing boat, but a mild mannered runabout boat with several people letting them chill and have fun running long range to island hop excegfa

Everyone has to get their nickname from somewhere. I'm not sure whether you or the young lad should now be forever known as POCKETS. I lean towards bestowing it to yourself. I dare say, this is not your first time in complaining about a young lad with his hands in his pockets. Twenty years in the army left me that I can't put my hands in my pockets and I invariably stand with arms akimbo, jealous of those around me able to stand with their hands, buried to the elbow, in their pockets in a nonchalant manner. Relax Pockets, you'll do yourself an injury.

I had a look at yourself. Not one original creative iota posted by your good self of what you can do on this TH-cam thing. Yet you critique a fine young lad willing to learn the art of the shipwright for having his hands in his pockets while the craftsman was explaining the process to the stupid on TH-cam. TH-cam, you, me and everyone else is STUPID when it comes to boat building. Shipwrights are otherworld beings. That young lad is so so lucky, that he is learning from a real craftsman

It's that kind of childish thinking that sets people back. There is nothing unprofessional about having your hands in your pockets, it has absolutely no bearing on his profession. It's the sign of an inadequate wanting to have power over someone. It's absolutely no business of yours which posture a man adopts.

@@ricos1497 So true. Watch any of Lou's visits to the lumber mills, or his visits to other boat houses. He often has his hands in his pockets when the hands have nothing to do, as well.
