Excellent narrative, and a touching memorial to a dedicated pilot and teacher. The loss of any aircraft, in either peacetime or during conflict is truly a tragedy. Max_Afterburner it may depend more on the choice of aircraft than on you video quality (which is improoving from video to video). Have something spectacular, something of general interest (SR-71, F-35, F-104) would probably geht more hits. You can „check“ my assumption by watching your F-14 and F-22 views (which should be very good)
@@MaxAfterburner I can understand the feeling of videos not performing to well. My third video of my F-15 build hit alot of likes and views. Then after that it just started to go down. But I try to get better and better. If you got any tips let me know. But keep up the good work.
Another great build with a touching story behind it. Rest in peace Captain. The Corsair holds a special place in my heart since I was a kid. Growing up in Greece, A-7s were a common sight, flying low around my hometown during the 80s and 90s. The Hellenic Air Force operated 65 A-7H/TA-7H export variants based on the Navy E model since 1975 and received 62 (or 69 if we add those that were used as spare parts) surplus USN A-7E/TA-7C in 1993. Greek Corsairs flew with 5 different HAF squadrons (335SQ, 336SQ, 340SQ, 345SQ and 347SQ, plus 2 OCU squadrons that borrowed aircraft from active SQs) until the type's withdrawal from service in October 31st 2014. These were the last flying Corsairs worldwide. 31 HAF A-7s were lost in accidents (24 H, 4 E and 3 TA-7C) claiming the lives of 13 Greek aviators (there were sadly, only 19 successful ejections). A Corsair was the first model kit I made when I was around 10 years old and gave as a present to my 8 year old nephew recently. Thank you for the amazing videos you create.
PS: I am pretty sure those Sidewinders are AIM-9Gs or Hs models since the AIM-9L/Ms have a very distinctive crank in their forward control surfaces. Hasegawa should be more careful with their kits details.
Hi AegeanPhantom, thanks for the stories and the info! Actually, I looked over the instructions after seeing your comment. I don't know how I got the "L" version in my head. Hasegawa has a tiny load out chart and for the USAF they list the Sidewinder as AIM-9B/E. You found another error 😬

BTW, I’m about to build this kit with AZ markings since they were transferred from DM(my first assignment as an A-10 462, (Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist in 85) and my son is working at the same squadron (357th) as I.
We Stil had A-7s, OV-10s, and OA-37s (I’m currently building an A-37B) when I was stationed there.

I started as a B-52H Crew Chief (Maintenance) at Minot AFB, ND, then moved on to the B-2A at Whiteman AFB, MO. I spent about a year in training (and ultimately unqualified due to airsickness) as a Helicopter Flight Engineer on UH-1N's at Langley AFB, VA and MH-60G's at Kirtland AFB, NM. Peace and love.

My dad was at Langley too started out there in 82 as the Crew Chief for the 94th TFS Squadron Commander. Then ended up in the 71st till he retired in 1993. Spent 2 years as a Airframe tech with the 380th BW at Plattsburgh AFB and 7 years as a KG13 computer technician in the old Air Communications Service.
A lot of sad feeling in this building, when little plastic pieces meet real life ... RIP for the pilot, and good work as a memorial Max.

It's nice to see a model builder who worked on the real thing. I get annoyed at builders who weather the model just to make it look old, dirty, worn or whatever without doing any research or having ever been physically on that vehicle or aircraft. Sorry but to some model builders we had to wash our vehicles and keep them clean, some think everything in the US arsenal is dirty. I was in the US Army, 1/11th ACR and drove tracks, M113, ITV and M577s. I'm glad you don't over do it with the weathering. Nice tribute to that airman.

I have to agree. I think Tom absolutely nailed the colour and weathering. When the video finished I thought the model was too dark and not very weathered. Then I watched the video again a few days later, looked at the photos, and realised it was spot on. The real aircraft in that scheme is very dark. I get annoyed when people over weather models that have no basis in reality.

We don't have an equivalent to the Air National Guard here in the UK. There used to be the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, which had a proud history during WW2 but it was disbanded in the 1950s because, the politicians said, it was not possible for 'weekend pilots' to properly operate the new, highly sophisticated supersonic aircraft then being built. Of course, the real reason was cost. The Air National Guard demonstrates the truth of this by it's continuing contribution to American security. This was an informative and impressive video and a fine build. My respects.

Amazing video. Thank you for making it. I remember my dads stories of his team's investigation of this crash. The only difference is I was sure his team came to the conclusion that his altimeter was off or not calibrated properly & that was a factor that led to the crash.
I really appreciate you making this video. My dad passed in 93 so things like this bring me back to when I was a teenager. I just wish I could watch your video with him.
Hi Wade, thanks for chiming in! I would have loved to have met your father and I’m sorry for his passing. The investigative board may have found that the altimeter was a contributing factor, but flying so low and fast in VFR clear weather -- a barometric altimeter is just “too slow” and subject to variables. The inches of mercury have to be dialed in at the beginning of every flight and the readings may be off due to pressure differences at the destination. During maintenance of these instruments on the jet, we would see enough error at maybe below 20-30 ft that you or a pilot can’t be sure, at least in my experience.
I preferred the radar altimeter to the barometric altimeter on the F-16 which is much more accurate. I’m not sure if that technology was available in the day of the Corsair II. The Combined Altitude Radar Altimeter (CARA) is not subject to atmospheric changes and gives true AGL measurements. Considering the terrain at the site area, I would think CARA readings would be changing so quickly zipping along so near to the ground that they would be unusable. In either case, I’m surely not an expert crash investigator and only added what I know of the accident.
If you check out C.W. Lemoine’s analysis of the AIB on the F/A-18E that crashed in “Star Wars” Canyon, it brings home again how a very experienced pilot can get himself in dire straits with just the slightest of miscalculations while flying very fast and close to any type of terrain even with all his instruments at his disposal and in perfect weather. I was on the ground the day we lost Maj. Troy Gilbert in Iraq in 2006. Your tribute to Cpt. Sizemore is wonderful and it's an amazing build. From one USAF Vet to another, I salute all you're doing here. EDIT: I've seen the Cylon 2 bird. I trained at Papago, at the 107th ACS for about 6 moths for a shredout of my AFSC. Never knew I was that close to such a history.

Although I am relatively late commenting directly on this video, I feel it is now appropriate. This would have to be one of your best videos, Tom. Firstly, the quality of content and level of detail/information about the pilot and his mishap. Secondly, the accuracy in achieving the paint job. Although it initially appears too dark, it is in fact spot on. Perhaps the best illustration of this occurs at 2:40 where the contrast between this aircraft and a Gull Gray/Insignia White S-3 Viking in the background is shown. And thirdly, the very moving and beautiful tribute to Capt. Mark Sizemore, with your trip to the crash site. This is what sets your channel apart from so many others.

Those AZ ANG A-7s were the first aircraft I saw from the window of the Continental 727 I flew in from Stapleton Airport, Denver on May 17 1987.

I have a couple of questions for you...what type of printer did you use for the decals you printed? How long did the FOIA information take for you to gather up? Hi Scott's Bane, I just use my older model HPLaserJet CP2025. The FOIA didn't take long (~ 3 weeks?), but I gathered other stories and also used the information from what was provided to research more. Thanks for watching 😃

Hello great video and build !!!! i have some questions, which compressor do you use for your airbrush and do you use a gasmask or something to protect you from the color gases? And how do i clean my airbrush when i want to change the color in the tank? Thank you and have a great day
Hi Ani edits, my compressor is shown in the tools section of the video, but it is an old clunky Paasche D500 1/10 HP. If I'm not outdoors, I wear a hospital grade face mask and have an air handler and fan off camera. You can run some plain thinner through the airbrush to rinse it out between colors.

Hi Peter, in this case since I'm using the oil paint/mineral spirit wash, I use a swab lightly dampened in clean mineral spirits.

Hi Clyde, I think it's a combo of the paint ratio and the time lapse effect that it appears to flow so nicely. I mainly use Tamiya acrylics at about a 75% paint to 25% thinner in my airbrushing work. 😇 Glad you enjoyed the video 👍

Hi Kacy, hard to say for sure. I don't think he was in a blind spot. The terrain there goes up and down in many directions. He may have been in a low spot when he began looking up at the incoming A-7s and may have not noticed that the range was starting to rise again.

During Desert Storm a M1 tank took a direct hit which knocked out the ammo storage but didn't destroy the tank but knocked out the electrical leaving the crew to furiously hand crank the turret so they could kill the Iraqi T-72 that shot them. Luckily he didn't see them turning the turret his way and when they got his bearing with the sights on the gun they fired killing their shooter.

All in all i find it a nice build, but what i am missing is, a bit color variations, worn effects, shades, highlights an so on, for my taste she is a bit too dark. But else all fine. Greets from Germany

@4:48 -- Wow. Low-flying indeed! It's a shame they don't generally survive accidents like this but I suppose it's just one of those things that happens with realistic training.
The people that argue against this sort of training have to realize they DIDN'T train like this as much before the Vietnam War and they lost more pilots in that war because they didn't push them harder.
They had an accident late last year with 2 T-38s and now they've talked about cutting part of the training syllabus to avoid an accident like that again. It's a shame because you're going to have future pilots put in similar situations and how are they going to react if they haven't been trained in that part of the syllabus (which in this case was formation landing)?

Speaking of the A-7, my understanding is that the USAF generally didn't like the plane (which was another Navy design they bought like the F-4 although the F-4 was a voluntary buy and the A-7 USAF purchase was mandated by the DoD) although it was an effective light attack plane and arguably better at this job than the F-16. It had longer range and greater payload capacity. It was, of course, not as good a dogfighter and probably not as capable a swing-fighter. Its lineage was from the F-8 Crusader but the A-7 was adapted to be a world-class attack plane and it was that for many years. It just got replaced by what many consider sexier planes (the F-16 and F-18) in 2 services (USN and USAF).
The A-7F adaptation was a much better plane than the A-7D which would worked out very well but they were hell-bent on getting the F-16 and retiring the A-7 altogether. Ditto for the Navy and its attitude towards the plane. The pilots I think liked the plane; the higher-ups wanted newer planes and newer tech although all the tests showed the F-16 and F-18 weren't more accurate bombers than the A-7 and that they were in fact both more deficient in payload/range than the plane they were replacing!

@@MaxAfterburner They were like that before Vietnam! Very risk-averse, no dogfight training and the pilots did not understand the limits of their planes because they weren't allowed to fly aggressively. Really, only the test pilots and Korean War and World War II carry-overs understood how to dogfight.
They didn't have any training like Red Flag and barely taught the pilots to do more than take off and fly straight and level! There was no TOP GUN, no DACT training! It was such a travesty what they did. They were so desperate for fighter pilots (during Vietnam) they were putting guys who flew cargo planes into F-4 cockpits after just a few months training in the Phantom if those guys were lucky!
I hope they don't go back to those days. They killed more people in Vietnam because of the lack of preparation prior to combat.

Interesting, albeit sad background story. Another informative build video and a great looking final result. Coincidentally, I also finished an A-7E (Hobby Boss) last month in a Navy scheme of VA-86 "Sidewinders" as operated aboard the USS Nimitz in 1975. The Hasegawa kit that you built looks to be a far superior kit though and will keep an eye out to pick one up. What's next? How about an A-4K as modernized by the RNZAF?
