    Hi Mr Whitt can you help me put this into 2 equations.
    I think of two numbers.If I double the first number and add the second number I get 18.If I double the first number and subtract the second number I get 14.What are the numbers?
    Thanks soooo much

    • @FortBendTutoring

      Sure Geeta! Just go to www.TutorMeMath.net and setup a paid online tutorial session.

    • @sLiMeoftheCITY
      @sLiMeoftheCITY 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Geeta Mohammed i know i'm super late but i just had to solve this i love word problems, it's real easy you just have to read between the lines.
      basically you are finding a sum of two numbers that when you double and add it will be 18 and when you subtract it will be 14.
      with enough trial and error you may land on the numbers but that may take a while, that's why we have algebra. when you think of doubling the number what do you suppose you do? what is 5 doubled or simply put what is 2 of 5? 5 and 5 is 10. so we can say that 5 doubled is 10. well in arithmetic we say 5 multiplied by 2 which just means 5 two times. so in this case the first number doubled is basically 2 multiplied by an unknown number or 2n.
      then it asks you to add a second unknown number to that equation we just formed. so 2n + (unknown number), let's call it y. so the equation now is
      2n + y.
      but it doesn't stop there. its says that the final number is 18 and "is eighteen" basically means "equal to" , so
      2n + y = 18;
      and the second equation shouldn't be so far off. its just the inverse of the first equation.
      2n - y = 14;
      you can now work out this equation by using any method in the linear system but with first glance elimination looks easy because the second equation is the inverse of the first equation so when you add the two equations you are left with
      4n = 32;
      when you add a negative to a positive value it becomes zero so its out of the equation.
      now its becomes easy because all you have to do is isolate n and divide both sides by 4 to get your answer which is 8 so plug that back in to any equation to find y.
      y = 2 and done is done algebra is awesome. peace!

    Hello Mr Whitt im new here.I love how clean and simple you make the translation of word problems.I still have awhile to go to get the hang of, when,what,or how to write the equation to even begin to solve.🤦🏾‍♂️.I get lost very easy.On problem two.You said,you could use x - 18 or × + 18, but you'll choose the latter.But WHY did u choose the later?I dont know when to add or subtract on both sides.

    • @FortBendTutoring

    Correct me if i'm wrong. But your solution to the problem in 13:35 is incorrect. The formula should be: 3x + 4x = 28 ; 7x = 28; x = 4 Therefore, there are 12 girls and 16 boys when you plug in x = 4. This can be proven by getting the ratio of 12/16 which is 3:4, the original ratio. 21/7 can't be the answer because it is equivalent to 3.

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are incorrect because the ratio is girls to total number of students, not girls to boys. If it were girls to boys it would be 3 to 1 or 3:1.

    Respecting your opening instruction of one equation one variable I attempted to solve problem 4 with the equation 40+x(.10)-25+X(.15) = 0 . I got the same answer, and I think decimals are kind of cute, but is doing the problem this way a valid approach, or am I just setting myself up for difficulty solving other problems of this type?

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Find two non consecutive even integers equal to 134. Find two non consecutive odd integers equal to 238.

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +kleevens41 This question is incomplete. Are you expected to add, subtract, divide or multiply these numbers to equal 134 or 138.

    • @kleevens41
      @kleevens41 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fort Bend Tutoring you are adding
      They didn't specify in the problem. I am just trying to figure what the formula would be to find the answer to these problems.

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a vague question. I would really need to see the original problem. As it stands there are infinite solutions. For instance, the solution could be 130 and 4 or 138 and -4. Then in the other problem, 135 and 3 or 141 and -3. Unless this problem is to determine your reading comprehension and understanding of integers, there is certainly something missing from the directions/instructions for this problem. One could derive an algorithm that could generate the solutions of this problem, but it certainly doesn't have a standardized formula.

    • @kleevens41

    Translating algebraic phrases can be kind of tricky or confusing sometimes. For instance, how do you translate the phrase "three times a number less than five"? Is it 5 - 3n? Or is it 3(5 - n)?, or is it another expression other than these two? The reason why I get confused is because the word "times" usually refers to both variables like n, and parenthesises like ( ). If I can get any helpful advice, I would appreciate. Your videos are helpful by the way.

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The second one:
    I used
    X - 18 = Y &
    2x + 3y = 21
    then
    2(Y + 18) + 3Y = 21
    So
    5y + 36 = 21
    and
    5y = -15
    so
    Y = -3
    X = 15
    Am i making more work for myself going about it this way?

    Usually when a, constant is more or less than a quantity times a number, I always write the second part of the word problem first for consistency in these types of word problems.

    • @mikerich8661
      @mikerich8661 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also want to add that whenever possible I try to use the first letter of an item or a person's name to find out the value the word problem is looking for. If problem #3, I used A to represent the number of iPad apps.

      It’s written correctly in the video as all units of measurement were converted into dollars. Therefore, the aforementioned 10¢ is changed to $0.1. Thanks 4 the inquiry!

    Hey, erm, I have a question.
    “The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 9. If the digits are reversed, the new number is 9 more than the original number. Find the original number.”
    I found the answer like this:
    x+x=9
    2x=9
    x=4.5
    The problem is, I guessed what it was after this, the answer was 45 and 54 respectively.
    But I want to know how to properly do it without leaps in the dark like I did here. (For quizzes, tests, etc.)
    Thanks!

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +xxXDarthGamerXxx Let x = 1st digit and y = 2nd digit. Then,
      x + y = 9 and
      (10y +x) - (10x + y) = 9
      Simplify the 2nd equation and use your favorite method for solving a system of equations to get the answer.

      In order to combine (add or subtract) terms, the exponents on the variables must be identical.

    Its ok, but i think the tutor goes too fast on the translating part of the problem and not deep enough as to why, he is obviously very good at this so it must seem very easy to him, and no the pause option is not really viable, since he simply does not explain well enough the problem
