    Well twelve year old me loved the title screen music! That jumbly tune kinda made me think of an electric guitar solo gone crazy... and yes, in hindsight, it did remind me of Zappa once I found out about his music.

    immediately recognized how brilliant this tune was when I first heard it. It always reminded me of the dissonant riffs that Voivod would play.

    Wow thank you very much for your answer M. Sanger ! It's a great pleasure to hear about the story of the creation of Rad Gravity music, as I play this great NES game since my childhood (and I'm also composer, specialised in film music) and as I'm preparing a video about Rad Gravity on my channel LORD PADDLE (about retrogaming), I made a part of the video about your music, I'll probably add a bit of your video if you give me your permission please ! Thank you very much, this was very interesting, and I'll always continue to hear your work ! See you later. PS : I'll send you the link of the video when it'll be online, of course, the next week ! :)

      @@GeorgeASanger Thank you ! Your anecdote about the 12-tone row is just great! I am a french composer, I studied musicology at the faculty in France, I studied Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, twelve-tone and serial music (I also studied some "serial" film music like Leonard Rosenman's THE COBWEB, the Main Titles from Jerry Goldsmith's PLANET OF THE APES, and some serial music from Goldsmith's THE ILLUSTRATED MAN) but I had never made the connection before ! It's great. Well seen for the influences of Devo, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin and Rocky and Bullwinkle ! Frankly this intro is superb, this one and that of "Planets" tune marked me for life since my childhood. Thank you for all the wonderful info and again well done for your wonderful work on "Bright Star" / "Rad Gravity" ! We'll talk about it and mention your video in our video on Rad Gravity next week. I'll keep you informed ! We keep in touch ! See you soon Mr. Sanger ! ;)

    When you break it down like that, it makes you think: that's a lot of decades and genres and styles and influences all mashed together.

    • @GeorgeASanger
      @GeorgeASanger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep...thanks! and thinking about it today, I remember/realize that the melody has some "Peter and the Wolf" DNA- that's another one that Dave W. encouraged me to aspire to.

    the manic rocky and bullwinkle theme was always one of my favorites, and hearing it was one of the inspirations for the rad gravity theme (which i took an immediate liking to) makes all the more sense

    I'm really glad that TH-cam recommended this video to me! I enjoyed listening to you talk that whole time!
    Also, I never knew that Red Gravity, a game I enjoyed so much growing up, was considered to have the "worst game soundtrack ever", which is weird because I can't agree with that at all lol
    I hope you see this comment and have a great day 😊

    I love the music in Rad Gravity! As a kid and as an adult. Maniac Mansion and Swords and Serpents too. Games I played so much as a kid with a friend. The Rad Gravity intro used to make us laugh because it's instant controlled chaos and fits the game. It's funny how much impact these tunes made on me. Just hearing them inmediately takes me back to those (better) days, bringing a smile to my face. Thank you for that! Super cool to hear how Rad Gravity's intro theme came to be. Greetings from the Netherlands!

      Haha! Wonderful and extremely gratifying to hear from you. Thanks so much! Yeah, I had faith that there would be a few good ears out there, thirsty for that kind of craziness. Again, thanks to Dave W. for encouraging that. You've given me inspiration as I go into my next gig to risk maybe getting a bit edgy again. Maybe 20-30 years after it comes out I'll get another message from you?!? :D And I'll be all "yep, I thought so." Have a great weekend!

    This song is very dissonant and reminds me if Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah were to do an 8 bit guitar solo. Not sure if you have heard of Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah but he does very dissonant guitar solos and his solo album is quite the trip of djent, jazz, and dissonance. I think I may have said this on Facebook a while back, but I don't think it was the composition that was the issue so much as the translation of the encouraged weirdness to the NES sound chip. Or maybe more specifically the reusing of his Maniac Mansion "instruments", or whatever the correct term would be here. Like, if you compare Rad Gravity to his version of the MM opening, you can definitely hear the similarities in instrumentation (again, this is probably not the right word). Had they been adjusted a bit (maybe less release on the melody?) it probably would have been just fine.
    This is one of those cases where I really would love to hear what it sounded like before you handed it over to him. Especially after you told me years ago about how the process worked, and given how historically good Warhol was at translating what you did, this one's always been a head-scratcher for me- albeit one I appreciate more now that you explained it.

      Believe it or not...I FOUND THE MIDI FILE yesterday. I normally used an MT-32 to guide my composing, but the patch numbers don't make sense on MT-32. I am thinking I might have been experimenting with a Proteus sound module at the time and may have used that for reference.

    Weird yes, but in an understandable way, unlike the many chinese bootleg NES games with terrible music. Maybe this was partly in the back of my mind when composed this song for a modern NES game: th-cam.com/video/Ch-1r7PwG4k/w-d-xo.html - it's definitely less crazy but definitely not a "normal" sounding track either.
