  • Thanks to a donation from the League of Kentucky Sportsmen, grouse habitat improvements are being made in eastern Kentucky. We take a birds eye view at Paintsville Lake WMA as Wildlife Biologist Scott Freidhof details the improvements.

Hello from Vermont. Great video. Would enjoy seeing a follow up of the same area now that its been a few years.

I was one of the three habitat techs hired with some of this grant money. The amount of hours spent on a chainsaw versus bobcat hours wasn't even close. Probably 2500 chainsaw hours, a bunch of prescribed burn and hack and squirt allowed for the real disturbance to be done. Scott is an amazing person to work for, be glad you have someone that cares as much as him watching over your land.

is it more beneficial to stack the cleared trees and shrubs or to burn them ?

Stacking provides the grouse with good nesting cover, plus grouse roosters "pick" a log/stump/etc to do their mating drumming from, so there's the side benefit of providing them with more perches.

I’ve never seen turkeys in the same part of the forest as ruffed grouse.
Young forest habitat...And no, the turkeys aren’t killing all the grouse! Ever.
