Hello dear Friends and welcome back to my channel, In this episode I have made a diorama showing a submarine passing through naval mines. For the submarine I have used the Revell plastic kit “U Boat type VII C” with a scale 1:350. I used cylinder resin stands for the first time in the hope that they would be invisible once inside the epoxy resin. Unfortunately, they are a little visible so this idea didn’t work out very well. I think next time I will reduce the diameter of the stands in the lathe as much as possible.

the detail around the periscope breaking the water is a real nice touch and the whole thing looks really good
Wrong direction! (i think)
For the stands you can solve this with 2 steps.
1) Make the Stands out of the same Resin as the water.
2) Lightly sand the Stands before application. This way the rest of the Resin will bind to it and make them virtually invisible.
nice tip, could also try this.
Another method is to experiment with small batches how the light refracts within the resin, instead of just going with the wind and accidentally messing up your final work
Much easier and you do not need to use stands or make any rehearsals that would make you loose time
Ive never worked with resin, but couldnt be made to have it suspended on top, and somehow remove the suspenders, then fill again with resin? Again, i have no idea if the resin would allow that

It's a really beautiful model display. It looks so realistic.
The stands were made of CLEAR resin, while the "sea" is blue. That's why you see them.
You could also hang the chains and mines from a frame and pour the resin block upside down (but you'd have to figure some way to keep the sub in place).
Great diorama anyway. It's very well made.
I didn't see your post but yes that fixes the chain. The fix for the sub is to use wire to hold the sub where the periscope
sticks out. That wire is a Tee that runs through the length of the sub. He can counter balance it so he stands on its own.
Pour the resin like you said and its clean.
Fishing line might work. Very thin light weight line.
Dont forget to weight the sub so it doesn’t float tho :)
9:56 Next time, make the stands out of the same epoxy resin as the "water". It will have the same light refraction index, and will appear to completely vanish once the main body of resin is poured.
you could use a plastic straw, dangle your chain down the middle then fill it with resin ?
Mike also color them the same blue as the water...
But for this project, would it be possible/doable to drill out the stands from the bottom of the resin block? Everything is now supported by the resin and fixed in place. After that, fill the holes with 100:40 blue-ish mixture to get a result that is (slightly) closer to invisible.

That surface was AMAZING!
I would take the chain, lay them out and then use just enough of the UV resin to get them to stiffen up. No matter how small you make the cylinders they are going to show because they refract light differently. As for the sub put in resin up to the point where it will rest and then place the sub. Because it has an air volume it wont sink much and then carefully pour in the rest of the resin. The rest of it you mastered but one tip would be to use that nifty air brush to blow around the water surface, you will get a lot more random feature and finer features. Otherwise came out great!
Thinking here, the sub could sink a bit but you could use some fishing line attached to the top and suspended from the top to ensure it does not sink. The fishing line will definitely vanish in the resin.
Thank you for your comment and ideas. Initially I have tried to harden the chains with UV resin but they are so tiny that uv resin couldn't harden them enough and the chains were bending. I also thought to first poure a layer of resin and then place the sub on it but usually there is a visible line between the 2 layers and I didnt want this. Finally I also thought to hung everything from the top with a tiny thread (like I have done in my hot air balloon video) but the chains/mines were so tiny/light and it would very difficult to sink inside the resin and keep straight 😖
@@4THECRAFT I don't think Kevin means to pour a layer, let it cure, sit the sub, and then fill. I suspect he means to just pause to set the sub where you want it, mid-pour. It shouldn't move too much, and shouldn't sink far, and no layer line. Worth getting some cheap sub kits to test out.

i.e. hide the build method - I know creates challenges with the top surface...
Mines were ancohred by wire, not chains (which would be impossible to get in correct scale anyway), so a thin piece of piano-wire or similar would be a much better choice. You should also make sure to place the mines at correct - and equal - depth (5-15 metres, as no anchored mine would float at the surface unlerss it had drifted off...).
Nicely done. The only thing I would really worry about changing, is next time you make the stand out of straws, make sure you color the stand the exact same mix ratio as you're using for the ocean water. The reason they're showing up is because they're clear. If they were tinted the same, they would vanish. If you had poured clear resin as the water without tint, they would have vanished as well. Otherwise, fantastic job. Really good job on the ocean surface.

The stands have a different refractive index than the resin, that's why they are visible. Create stands out of the same resin next time. Also consider creating (paint) sand at the bottom. The waves were inspired. Good job on those.

The problem with the sand at the bottom is that it would create the illusion that the ocean there is only about 50' deep....

The water surface looks great and the way the support rods disappeared when the larger volume was added gives a very good appearance.

I recon those stands for mines can easily be invisible for someone who doesnt know they are there or doesnt have idea about scale modeling tricks, just like myself, all I have seen was this epic scenery just like cut out of the time and space and brought infront of us ... even those bubbles coming out of the back of sub ... jees ... love it

WOW, passing the light at the end was breathtaking, given all the work you put in consider putting submarine sound effects to add the finishing touches. Dioramas are like 3d photos frozen in time!

If you could somehow make the mines “sway with the current” somehow next time that’d be cool. Like have them all leaning in the direction the u boat is going. Mines wouldn’t just be completely upright especially on a windy day with tons of waves and a u boat floating by. Awesome project though! Inspiring!

I noticed this a lot too Bill,, especially with waves and wake,, some submarine makers, run the water STRAIGHT down the gunnels and ships sides, and if the ship is MOVING, well, inertia would make it go opposite its intended course, IE forward or backward, depending on the ships trek,,, good call !!
Yeah, because a sub going through a minefield usually does 15 knots, right?
The mines must have an anchor or a diving depth adjustment device that stands on the bottom. And there are so many mines that you can 't help feeling that the boat will certainly die.

I find if you add some color to the stands to match the color of the resin your going to pour. It will help them blend in better.

@@4THECRAFT One idea that could be possible - upside down pour - you have the chains hanging down into the mould that way you have no need of stands. Might be a bit more complex to do the top bit though...

@@warailawildrunner5300 true, but that would probably capture air bubbles in the sub's details, which are typically on the top side. Then you'd need vacuum (or a pressure pot) to get rid of those bubbles, maybe - and flood the inside of the sub with resin.

One of the tips I've gleaned and still use to this day, is to take a sheet of paper and practice spraying lines on it, to get consistent in your airbrush coverage.
Oh, and you don't need to use too high a pressure. only about 10-15 PSI for most applications, and not even that much for thinned paints.

Try adding resin coloring to the stands before curing them, it probably didn't work because of the diffrence in color between the stand color and "water" color.

Do the whole thing upside down, so everything hangs down when pouring the resin. Afterwards, you can turn it around and pour a minimal amount of resin on the top to create the waves.
I have used this method in my kraken video but the sub / mines float in the resin so they wouldn't keep straight /balanced only by gravity.
@@4THECRAFT I guess the only other way then is to put superglue or a similar type of hardening glue on the tiny chains to keep them straight before hanging them upside down and then pouring the resin? In other words make them "un-bendable"? The superglue should blend in with the resin or not show at all. Could work?

@@4THECRAFT You could use very small ball bearings for the mines, they will not float. They have these in all sizes. You can use CA glue to glue the detonators to it and then paint them the way you want them. You can also use this on the sub, before you glue the sides of the model together, just put some weights in it. That way you can hang this upside down and it will not float. I still think you made a beautiful piece of this model, i really loved the water surface.

Hang the chain with a weight on it so it is absolutley straight. 'Paint' a layer of your resin over the chain so it stiffens and becomes like a wire. No stands needed.
Also, to make the resin absolutely invisible you need to make it the exact same color as your pour.

I was going to say the same thing. I think that the only way, is to use the same epoxy resin for the stands, and the water. Even the same color should be used.

No, the best solution is no stands at all, HANG the ship and poor resin until just below the hang points. Allow resin to partially cure (Time varies depending on resin used) remove hanging supports and poor the rest of the resin. No supports what-so-ever needed!

Great Job mate, here's an idea for the mine mooring chains.
Suspend them from something, then, run small amounts of resin down them, this should then provide a stiffened chain that will stand up on it's own.

Re: the stands - if you built a 4-legged ceiling base you could hang the model from it using fishing wire, that way you have no stands at all
not even, he used clear resin for the stands and coloured resin for the rest, had he used the same blue tinted resin for the stands they'd be invisible.
Why not just do as he said and reduce the diameter of the stands as much as possible, but also put the anchor chain inside the straw before pouring the resin in? Could help distract from seeing the stand itself and the mines could be directly above the chain, rather than being slightly offset.
@@Eturian because it doesn't matter how thin you make the stands, if you always use a clear resin for them while surrounding them in coloured resin they'll always be visible. You could make the stands 20x thicker than they are and use the same blue tinted resin as you do to pour the rest and they wouldn't be visible because its the same resin/colour as its surroundings.

I work for a large resin producer and it always impresses me to see the projects created by the end user. Looks awesome.
Having worked at sea now for 2-3 years i'd say the ocean surface was amazingly well done! I loved it all around!

Add a layer of sand to the bottom. Also make the mines out of something that floats like polystyrene balls (as long as the heat from the curing resin doesn’t melt them) or hollow plastic balls and let physics do the work. The buoyancy of the balls will pull a light chain taut...

That would really mess up the scale, as it would make it almost too shallow for a uboat passing, as well as way to shallow for anchored mines (at that depths groundmines would be used, and that probably voids the purpose of this diorama...) ;-)

Instead of using stands, you can just hang the sub in the air (on the perimeter scope) while filling in the epoxy.

I have an easy solution for the stands :
hang those little chains from a hook
attach a small fishing weight at the end to keep them under tension
apply uv resin to the chain
harden uv resin
the chain is now a stand without resorting to straws
that's brilliant.
Yes, any way to make the chain stiff enough to hold a mine vertically removes the need for the resin mine stands.
@@crb456 and to be fair that can be applied to virtually anything, cordage, chains, any kind of electrical wire (maybe in a city scenario).
You simply have to stiffen them up and use gravity and weights to keep them perfectly straight.
Or, hang the chains and mines from the base, upside down and stiffen them with resin or super glue before pouring all the resin around the sub.
I actually like the small trails of bubbles from the sub captured in the resin, but I suspect this was a happy accident caused by residual air inside the model.
@@crb456 On a nice model like one of these I'd steer clear of superglue, too many chances of messing up and I hate that white residue that it sometimes gives off.

Maybe you dont need stands, just pour the resin in layer and hold the pieces from above the mold at the desire level and pour just enough to fix the pieces

What a gorgeous piece
The real question here, that no one is asking, "Will the sub make it through the mine field?"
The cool part of it being stoped in time is that it's already destroyed by the mines, and has already made it safely through the mine field at the same time, just like our life.
My thoughts are with the sailors inside. Maybe even inland conscripts who literally never have seen the ocean. Pitched against brethren in uniforms of a different color they will likewise never see. Maybe the outside perspective of beautiful displays like this one will help *us* see a bigger picture.
They just recently disclosed details about three broken subs near Cornwall. The British had planted mines deep in the passages through the normal minefields specifically to catch Uboats...
Way too many mines, way too close. That sub's a goner!

I'm sure that you've seen the great movie, "Das Boot". It really makes feel for those sailors, even though they were fighting on behalf of an evil ideology.
Wonderful with one more exception. The "surf" from those screws... That means the screws are causing cavitation and they're not supposed to be doing that. Cavitation causes noise in the water and that's real bad for a sub. Probably even back then. Besides, I doubt electric drive, since only the scope and not the snorkel is up which would imply they were on their diesel engines, shouldn't really be able to drive the screws to that speed even though the screws were old and not, like subs of today, computer designed to minimize cavitation.

Yep that was my idea too, attach a couple of chained bombs to the ship to suspend it then create what would be the top as the botom then pour the resin in and once dry turn it right way up again and voila no need for rods

The effect produced in the dark with a torch shining down from above is a most poignant one. The courage of those above the waves and those below it has too often been overlooked. I know sadly we have largely broken the good intentions of our forbears not to ever forget war in all it's iterations. These models help us to readjust that focus and perhaps possibly imagine a humanity that has never known war.
