This video closed a loop for me. I'm not kidding. For like 20 years the bickering between Siskel and Ebert over the special effects has been stuck in my subconscious. For some reason it stayed with me. It's not like I thought about it all the time, but every time the name Ebert was mentioned the first thing that surfaced was that conversation. Thank you so much. This comment must seem bizarre haha.
At the end, Siskel says "I dont know" in response to Ebert's question "90% of the time?" which proves that Siskel clearly did not watch this movie in full, or, if he did, was napping during all the Eddie Murphy wisecracks that were plenty throughout the film, and were consistently timed to keep a steady flow of entertainment from start to finish. Several unexpected scenes, which often threw in strange twists, kept the movie fresh throughout which helped prevent predictability, such as the dream scene in it's full entirety with so many weird twists, the walk to the dagger, the Demon setting up carpet in a room to talk to the warlord, the lady kicking ass in the fight scenes, the boy playing tricks on the enemies, the rat turning into the enemy, the old man who surprisingly turns out to be the father, the 300 year old dragon lady eventually (and unexpectedly) unmasked. The fun ride, along with the Eddie Murphy lines and gestures, make this movie entertaining and enjoyable, just like Ebert says. Siskel is certainly delusional to say Eddie was funnier in America than he was in Tibet. Siskel has me stunned with that remark! Many of Eddie's best moments and lines were in Tibet! His confrontation with the old man, his confrontation at the airport, his walk to the dagger with the many funny lines and gestures (his gestures while listening for the quarter to hear it drop, but hearing nothing, and then screaming out in fright "there's no ground in here!"), his way of talking in the temple while spinning the pillar, telling the old man he can keep the $100 because there's no saying what nastiness might be on it (based on the previous booger scene), and more! Also, this isn't silly childish slapstick as we see with many other movies like Police Academy, Chevy Chases's National Lampoon movies, etc. The Golden Child rarely showed slapstick humor and relied more on unexpected twists, timing, and great one-liners for comedy, thereby helping the viewer to feel more strongly about the plot, the enemies, and the importance of the Golden Child. This movie won me over because it had the qualities of "Ghostbusters", whereby you could appreciate the fun personality of Bill Murray, yet still believe in the plot where the ghosts are trying to takeover, just like you could appreciate the fun personality of Eddie Murphy in Golden Child, while still following the plot to see if he can rescue The Golden Child. The Golden Child also reminds me of "The Last Starfighter," another fun movie ride, with comedy and similar qualities.
Siskel: "....wants to use the dagger to turn the Golden Child into an evil creature." Proof positive that Siskel did not watch this movie. Or got all interested in his Milk Duds box when Frank Welker as the devil with the Dr. Claw voice said, "Use the Dagger to KILL THE CHILD!!"
Gene makes a good point about Eddie being better than the rest of the film. Back then a star could open a movie. Not the case anymore. More about the concept now.
No no no. I would watch this movie anytime over beverly hills cop and best defense. It may not be his best but it certainly isnt boring. I think Charles Dance made a great villian!
Wait, did they say that The Golden Child was better than Beverly Hills Cop? I enjoyed both but Beverly Hills Cop is a genuine classic; The Golden Child was an amusing bit of filler with a few great lines/scenes.
That is not the only movie classic that they hated, don't forget they also hated Home Alone, and look at the classic that turned out to be, as far as I can recall I have never heard of The Golden Child until now. And I see Netflix has it on dvd, I wouldn't call myself a big Eddie Murphy fan, instead to see how One Siskel called him a star, when look at the amount of movies he haas done in the decades.
Ebert: "I think it's the only movie this Christmastime appropriate for the family audience." CUT TO: Eddie Murphy finding a pot of oatmeal cooking in blood on a stove. CUT TO: A creepy looking demon flying after Murphy and the Golden Child during the film's climax. Yeah, I don't know about this movie being all that family friendly. In fact, as a kid, I remember being scared during the scenes I just mentioned.
Eddie murphy was hilarious more than ever but the movie itself was bad especially the last act with that dragon, the villain and the plot as a whole, exactly 1:48
I have to agree with Siskel on this because it could've had add more special effects & fight scenes not only in the states also in Tibet like GHOSTBUSTERS.
I wanted to like The Golden Child, but I can't say I did. It has a lot of cool elements, but they don't quite come together to make a good, cohesive film.
One of the weirdest movies I've seen, in that the movie was built to be garbage, from top to bottom, from start to finish. But Murphy's performance was so good that it elevated the movie, if not to a classic, to at least a great showcase of his comedic talents.
He's not a "fucking moron" he's a man who has his own opinions and he does like films, look at his review for Lady and the Tramp and look at his top picks of the year.
I can still remember when this picture came out, and I never saw it, but someone I just knew it'd be horrible. It was at that point in Murphy's career when he first began jumping the shark.
WOW! These guys are usuallyon point with their criticisms of movies. It's so hard to believe thay liked any part of this movie! Golden Child is TOTAL CRAP!
This was a very obnoxious, unpleasant, unwatchable movie. You didn't care about the kid at all, who was more of an object than a person, and the logic of the movie was less credible than a cartoon. If you aren't an absolute Eddie Murphy fan, this film is painful to sit through...
This movie was unpleasantly stupid and obnoxious. So feeding a child blood to corrupt him is a family picture. Talking about using a dagger on him is family material. And Murphy yucks his way through it. The entire cast and plot is a straight man for Murphy, and it was painful to sit through.
I really miss these two
Absolutely love this movie, I could watch this over n over again for the dancing Pepsi can scene alone 😂

48HRS, The Golden Child, LIFE
Numsie brother nice to have there is no ground here 😊😊😊

The bad guy was dull? Charles Dance is dull? Geeeeet ouuuuuuta heeeeere! I love this movie.
I enjoyed the movie but Gene is right, the villain was dull.
Siskel: "....wants to use the dagger to turn the Golden Child into an evil creature."
Proof positive that Siskel did not watch this movie. Or got all interested in his Milk Duds box when Frank Welker as the devil with the Dr. Claw voice said, "Use the Dagger to KILL THE CHILD!!"
Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) is worth the watch.
I actually liked the whole film. Charles Dance was a great villian, & the rest of the cast was charming especially Victor Wong.
1:04 "jive talks"
Love this movie.
Gene makes a good point about Eddie being better than the rest of the film. Back then a star could open a movie. Not the case anymore. More about the concept now.
We really have no stars anymore. These days, they are names attached to franchises.
No no no. I would watch this movie anytime over beverly hills cop and best defense. It may not be his best but it certainly isnt boring. I think Charles Dance made a great villian!
0:38 Best joke of all time :-) :-) :-)

Eddie's great in it--just remember the blood in the oatmeal scene freaking me out as a kid
classic movie; best movie eddie ever did
Ebert: "I think it's the only movie this Christmastime appropriate for the family audience." CUT TO: Eddie Murphy finding a pot of oatmeal cooking in blood on a stove. From the same guy that thought Baby's Day Out was too scary for children.
How you not gonna mention the creepy ass snake lady!? That scared the hell out of me back in the day
@Xenda Golden Child is a masterpiece if you compare it with every movie Murphy has done the last 20 years.
Yeah... pretty much, anyway!
i say i i iiiiiiiii want the knife! LMFAO!!!
Look...All I want is a chip. :)
Had hoped their argument about whether Eddie Murphy was on the screen all the time had continued like - No he isn't - Yes he is - No he isn't - etc...
Eddie murphy was hilarious more than ever but the movie itself was bad especially the last act with that dragon, the villain and the plot as a whole, exactly 1:48

Wow, is that Charles Dance?
Pleeeaasse....
I wish someone would do a thorough breakdown of The Golden Child in relations to the occult, similar to the breakdowns on YT for Eyes Wide Shut
I can’t trust their eyes. They thought this was better than Beverly Hills cop.
Siskel is my muhfukkin nigga! I promise you, i miss watchin them........... RIP SISKEL.....
I wanted to like The Golden Child, but I can't say I did. It has a lot of cool elements, but they don't quite come together to make a good, cohesive film.
The golden child is fuckin AWESOME!
One of the weirdest movies I've seen, in that the movie was built to be garbage, from top to bottom, from start to finish. But Murphy's performance was so good that it elevated the movie, if not to a classic, to at least a great showcase of his comedic talents.

The finale of the film is disappointing but overall, TGC is a good entertainment.
Great movie, but with many holes. Gotta ignore them.
Scary digital images!
goldent child was funny! yes murphy has done better but this is one of his worst either. i thought it was funny.
Bad movie, but one of Eddie Murphy's funniest.
Clever reply!!! I'm not by the way.
That wasn't rap music, its known as "scratching" and was developed in discos, and especially at the time this was made was part of disco.
I can still remember when this picture came out, and I never saw it, but someone I just knew it'd be horrible. It was at that point in Murphy's career when he first began jumping the shark.
turn the child into an evil creature? were they paying attention at all? They wanted the knife to kill the child, not corrupt it.
The 3 Amigos
@zenburger Best movie? Hell No. Although a masterpiece compared to the junk he does now.
The Golden Child can't make up its mind whether it wants to be an adventure of a comedy. I think it fails on both levels.
It was bad, but fun.
Did Roger just refer to rap as 'disco music'?
It was a blurred line in the early 80s
All I see is Beverly Hills Cop!
Whats there fuckin problem with special effects?
Apparently hard rock is a bad thing
WOW! These guys are usuallyon point with their criticisms of movies. It's so hard to believe thay liked any part of this movie! Golden Child is TOTAL CRAP!
A Terrible movie.
Chris Hall No it’s not, only in your opinion.
i liked the bad guy and don't find Eddie Murphy's funny.
This was a very obnoxious, unpleasant, unwatchable movie. You didn't care about the kid at all, who was more of an object than a person, and the logic of the movie was less credible than a cartoon. If you aren't an absolute Eddie Murphy fan, this film is painful to sit through...
This movie was joyless and stupid, and Murphy was painful to watch. It absolutely sucked.
What are they talking about, this is like the worst movie ever made
“Jive talk” 🙄 yikes!!
This movie was unpleasantly stupid and obnoxious. So feeding a child blood to corrupt him is a family picture. Talking about using a dagger on him is family material. And Murphy yucks his way through it. The entire cast and plot is a straight man for Murphy, and it was painful to sit through.
