Balsa USA Fokker Dr.1 Triplane: A WORLD WAR ONE LEGEND!

  • Phil Bland's beautiful Balsa USA 1/3 Scale Fokker Dr.1 Triplane in action at the SoCal Scale Squadron's Warbirds and Classics event held in Blackstar Canyon (Irvine California), in June, 2022.
This particular plane (Dr.1 577/17) is painted to represent the aircraft flown by Leutnant Rudolf Klimke, who served in Jasta 27 until 21 Sept., 1918, when he was severely WIA. He managed to land his machine (a Fokker D.VII) but was almost killed when the hospital he was receiving medical attention at was accidentally bombed later that night. He was not able to return to service. Klimke would ultimately be credited with 17 aerial victories.
The interesting and unique anchor painted on the aircraft was a good luck talisman suggested by his mother. She believed an anchor symbolized 'good hope', which seems to have worked out well for her son as he survived service in both WWI and WWII! Klimke would live to be 95 years old, and passed away on 18 March, 1986.
Be sure to stay tuned for the outtakes at the end!! Enjoy!

John you know I LOVE WWI planes! The big DR-1's fly great, still a pain to land, but they fly great. The smaller ones are a hot mess. The out takes were hilarious! Gotta love tuning...lol. This gentleman flew it very well, and was smart enough to land it in the grass...well done! Thanks for sharing Bro!!

I built the 1/4 scale and after 6 test flights to get the CG right I spoke with an old timer who suggested two additions. First a tailwheel and second a gyro on the rudder. He was right! Flies perfectly now like a cub and is very stable on landing - no more bobbing around and best of all, it Will do a downwind turn for takeoff without me having to run for it.

Great to hear about your experience with these Dr.1's! I've heard the big ones actually fly really good, and I'm glad to hear you got yours sorted. Many happy landings and all the best to you!

WOW! Awesome flight. Looks great in the air, I was at the edge of my seat for the landing, and it was a nice job landing it. 👍👍

Oh by the way - you have the very BEST RC event announcer anywhere! I may yet build the 1/3rd scale if it will fit in my Highlander.

I grew up with all kinds of models from indoor rubber to 1/2A CL, .40 ten-mile, to R/C sport, but now all electric. But I'm starting to be of the opinion that all model aircraft should be powered by a gas engine, in fact as I'm watching your great video I'm having an urge to order a couple nitro motors .. must be gas -motor cravings lol. Thx for sharing!

Thank you Richard! Yes, unfortunately, Mr. Reynolds gets the last word with regards to scaling things that move through fluid "like" mediums. Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

Nice did he want to land in the grass it looks rough out there.

He did my friend, those WWI planes always do better landing in grass. They are skittery on pavement. All the best!

Hallo Damien! That's very interesting my friend! I may contact you at some point if I ever do the research on him. It seems Klimke lived a very long and fruitful life indeed. Thank you so much for checking in, hope you enjoyed the model! Cheers!
